21.01.2022 JobKeeper + Victorian Business Support Fund | JobKeeper - Tomorrow is the final day that you can enrol into JobKeeper and lodge April 20 Monthly Declaration. This is to enable your entity to receive the $3,000 per elibilge employee for the month of April. This includes eligible business participants also. Note, that you would have had to pay your employees $3,000 already for the month of April by 8 May 2020. PLEASE...do not do anything dodgy to try and claim JobKeeper.... There are some firms out there that will backdate payroll, or go back and register directors as employees (if there are multiple directors) just so they can be on the books and be eligible employees. This is a VERY risky move and, if caught, can lead to heavy penalties from the ATO. Victorian Business Support Fund - Monday is the final day to apply for the $10k grant. The criteria for this has changed: 1) Employ people; and 2) Have a turnover of more than $75,000; and 3) Have payroll of less than $650,000; and 4) Hold an Australian Business Number (ABN) and have held that ABN at 16 March 2020; and 5) Have been engaged in carrying out the operation of the business in the Australian State of Victoria on 16 March 2020, and 6a) For Stream One - operate in an industry sector that has been subject to closure or highly impacted by the restrictions announced by the Victorian Government External link (opens in same window); OR 6b) For Stream Two - be enrolled as eligible participants in the Commonwealth Government’s JobKeeper External link (opens in same window) payment scheme. The important change is that they have now included stream 2, which means if you satisfy eligibility criteria 1-5 and you are enrolled in JobKeeper, then you are able to apply for this grant. Any further details about the grant please see the link below:

21.01.2022 OCTOBER 31 Don't forget that the October 31 lodgement deadline is creeping up. Most individuals that do not have a tax agent will need to ensure their tax returns are completed. If you are finding it hard to get your tax returns completed by 31 October and, you suspect you are in a payable position, please contact me.

19.01.2022 CRYPTO UPDATE | Please be careful and make sure you know your tax obligations when exchanging cryptocurrency (e.g bitcoin). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) have done some extensive data matching, which has resulted in up to 350,000 individuals being contacted by the ATO. In the letter it states "Information provided to us indicates you may have disposed of cryptocurrency in the 20XX financial year. If you exchanged cryptocurrency for goods, cash or other cryptocurrencie...s then this is normally considered a disposal for the purposes of capital gains tax. You may need to include a capital gain or loss in your income tax return. We're giving you the chance to fix any mistakes now. If we audit you and find you haven't reported your capital gain or loss correctly, we may charge you a penalty." You will have 28 days to maned your income tax return to avoid penalties, so please make sure that you attend to this!!

17.01.2022 JOBKEEPER | If you are an entity that is eligible for JobKeeper, please do not forget that you have to pay your eligible employees by 8th May!! If you fail to pay your employees then you will not be eligible for JobKeeper for the month of April. Remember, it is a minimum of $3,000 per employee.

16.01.2022 JOBKEEPER!! The last payment for JobKeeper 1.0 must be paid on or before 27 September 2020. After this, you will need to determine if you qualify for JobKeeper Extension. The JobKeeper Extension has a few more trickier parts than JobKeeper 1.0, such as: 1) Determine actual GST Turnover 2) Determine correct pay rate tiers for your employees... 3) Determine the hours worked for your employees to determine if they are eligible 4) If you cannot use the basic test then you can try using the alternative test There will be a lot more work involved to determine eligibility so it is important that you get this right!! 12.01.2022 GOOD NEWS - STIMULUS PACKAGE | We are all going through extremely challenging times, especially for the economic environment. The Federal Government has released a stimulus package which is designed to boost spending and investments across the economy. This was announced today and I believe it is good news for many people. The stimulus package measures include: Increasing the instant asset write-off for businesses (Now $150,000 threshold!!!!!!) Increasing tax depreciatio...n deductions for new investment assets made by business Cash assistance to businesses Supporting apprentices and trainees Household stimulus payments Assistance for regions severely impacted by Coronavirus Please read the latest bulletin from Banks Group to find out more about each of these measures.

12.01.2022 JOBKEEPER | Good news for many businesses and also employees. On 8 April 2020, the Government passed legislation to establish the framework for implementing the JobKeeper payment stimulus measure which will provide eligible businesses with a payment of $1,500 per fortnight per eligible employee of the business. On 9 April 2020, a separate Legislative Instrument was released which outlines further specific details of the measure. The main steps in determining the JobKeeper Su...bsidy is: 1) GST Turnover will need to decrease by 30% from prior year comparative. This is either done using the comparative month (i.e. March 2019 vs March 2020, April 2019 vs April 2020 etc) or quarter (Jun 19 BAS quarter vs Jun 20 BAS quarter, Sep 19 BAS quarter vs Sep 20 BAS quarter) 2) Determine your eligible employees and provide them with a JobKeeper Nomination Form and have it signed and returned by 30 April 2020 3) Enrol in the JobKeeper Subsidy scheme on the ATO portal (you or your accountant can do this) 4) Pay your eligible employees at least $3,000 by the end of April 2020. This may mean you might need to top them up if they receive less than $3,000 per month (some software providers, like Xero, already have a payroll code for this) 5) Keep up your monthly JobKeeper Declaration See the ATO link below for further information or contact me for assistance

11.01.2022 COVID-19 | I hope everyone is ok and coping in this troubled time. Please be mindful of others in the community. We do not need to 'panic buy' and clean all the shelves of products, as those that are in desperate need are not able to purchase their bare essentials. We need to be more considerate and help those around us. If we work together as a community then we can get through this unprecedented time.

10.01.2022 JOBKEEPER!! Just remember that you only have 5 more days to lodge your June 20 monthly declaration for JobKeeper. Don't miss out!!

09.01.2022 JOBKEEPER PAYMENT | This is a great incentive by the Federal government. For all those businesses that have employees this is a great way to keep them on the books and they get paid also. This announcement was made on 30 March 2020 and the wage subsidy will provide employers with a fortnightly subsidy of $1,500 per employee for a maximum period of 6 months. The subsidy will commence to be paid by the Government to eligible employers from the first week of May 2020 but will b...e retrospectively calculated from 30 March 2020. In order to apply for the wage subsidy, there are various tests that need to be satisfied. See the link and take a read of the treasury. Any questions please contact me!! See more

09.01.2022 SPECIAL TOPIC - COPPER | Are you a police officer? There are lots of deductions that you can claim, such as: Meals and Travel (i.e travelling between two workplaces) Tools and Equipment ( i.e. cost of repairing your equipment) Self-Education (i.e. attending seminars, conferences etc) Informant Expenses, if not reimbursed... Home Office (if you do some work from home) Union and professional fees Fitness expenses, such as gym memberships are private in nature, however there are some police officers that are required to maintain a very high level of fitness well above the general standard. This may include special emergency squads, diving squads, police academy physical training instructors, and police officers who work regularly with police dogs and train them. The ability to claim grooming expenses is a myth. According to the ATO you cannot claim expenses for hairdressing, cosmetics, hair and skin care products. These are private in nature. The above is only general advice. If you wish to discuss anything further or would like the assistance of Cerra Business Services to complete your taxation requirements, please contact me.

03.01.2022 STIMULUS DETAILS | Businesses are individuals are doing it tough at the moment, especially amid the forced closure of Australian non-essential businesses, social distancing and consumer sentiment. During the weekend of 21 and 22 March 2020, the Victorian State Government released their stimulus package and the Federal Government released a second round of stimulus measures to further expand the measures it initially introduced last week. The stimulus measures being introduced by Government are evolving and certain specific details are still to be released as and when legislation is released (expected to be this coming week). I will endeavour to provide further releases as and when new information is made available.
