24.01.2022 Fifty years ago Russ Cottage was saved from dereliction and restored as a house museum. To celebrate this milestone and its 150 year life, we have enclosed the ...west verandah to make a laundry and wash room, in keeping with historic use of the space. The project was made possible through the support of Barry and Kym Wyse of Dongara Mitre 10 who kindly donated all materials. Also thanks to Richard Irving and Jared Plozza for their assistance, and Doopa for all his hard work. We will be officially celebrating the 50th anniversary, and opening the laundry and washroom at a morning tea on 23rd January. See more

16.01.2022 Did you know that 29 June was the 176 year anniversary of the grounding of the American whaling barque 'Cervantes' off North Cervantes island. Whilst anchored t...o do some fishing off the coast of Jurien Bay, a sudden wind came through and the ship was stuck fast. Three seamen from the boat arrived in Fremantle, exhausted, reporting the wreck. The Inquirer and Commercial News reported the incident on July 10th, 1844 stating, "On Saturday evening between eight and nine o’clock, three seamen belonging to the American whale ship Cervantes, of New Bedford, arrived at Fremantle in an exhausted state, and reported the wreck of that vessel upon an island in Jurien Bay, about 100 miles northward of this. Yesterday, the master, Captain Gibson, and some more of the crew arrived and stated that the vessel was wrecked on the 29th June and that one man had been left about 30 miles beyond the Moore River unable to proceed further, and that six others, after walking some distance with them, had returned to the wreck, with the intention of making their way here in a boat. The vessel was but a short time from America and had only about 10 barrels of oil. The master reports that the vessel is but very little damaged, and likely to remain in a perfect state for a long time. He has applied to the government to send the Champion in search of the missing men, and to bring the effects of himself and crew an application which will doubtless be complied with. The poor fellows, who are of course, in a destitute state, have been provided for by R.M.B Brown Esq., the Resident Magistrate." Instead of trying to salvage the shipwreck, they sold it all off to buyers. The stores and whaling gear went for 155.

14.01.2022 NO TOOTHY SHARKS TAKING ON SWIMMERS ON THIS WATCH One of the world's most terrifying creatures, the great white shark, has now taken up residence in Cervantes. ...Thanks to local contractors, Cervantes Aluminium & Steel Fabrication, this great white has been made into the form of a bike rack at Catalonia Park. This is the only one of these known to be in existance on the planet and although the most ferocious creature to inhabit our ocean waters you can actually interact with this great white as you park your bike in his tummy! 10.01.2022 The sad loss of one of Cervantes early students. It is sad to hear in early April of the loss of Gwynnedd, only daughter of Terry and Lyn Galliott, who first arrived in Cervantes in 1967 and who worked tirelessly for the development of the town over many years. Gwynnedd attended the local primary school and was known by locals as a happy, fun loving girl who loved the beach. She moved with her parents in the late 1980's. Sincere sympathy is offered by Cervantes residents to her brothers Richard and Robert and their families in their sad loss.
10.01.2022 During this enforced lull in activities we have decided to honour some of our residents with a short biography in recognition of their dedication and commitment to our town of Cervantes. We are starting this series with Mickey Russell. Unfortunately we don't see Mickey out and about much these days and we wish him well. Michael John RUSSELL Born 24 July 1940 in Pontnewydd, Wales At 12 years old in 1953 he was sent to Contarf Boys Town in Manning,WA. While at Clontarf, boys... were taken on trips, one of these being to Lancelin where he met the Gazeley family and this was the start of a long association with the family, the fishing industry, Green Island and Cervantes. Mick worked on the crayboats for a number of owners - Tom Woodhead, Trevor Deacon, John McLay and Gil Waller. He and wife Maureen purchased Lot 86 Iberia Street and built their residence. Two daughters, Michelle and Tammy followed but the marrriage subsequently ended. During off seasons he learnt the trades of tiling and plumbing and gasfitting, which came into use when the Community Club was built. Mickey has been very involved in most community and sporting clubs in Cervantes. Some of his achievements are - President of the Anzac Services Commitee, President of the Cervantes Liberal Party, Life member of the Cervantes Dart Club to name a few. Mickey followed this involvement by becoming a Dandaragan Shire councillor and served from 1998 to 2014. He received an award for his 'Capable and Long Service to the Shire of Dandaragan' at the State Local Government conference in 2011. Mickey met Briar in 1982 and she joined him in Cervantes in 1983. One of their main interests in this later life became the Memorial Park, where Anzac Day services have been held since 1997. Mickey took on the care and maintenance of the park for many years and only recently relinquished this to the Men's Shed. This information supplied to Cervantes Historical Society by Mick and Briar Russell
