19.01.2022 Better late than never Happy St Pats to the Cethana herd

19.01.2022 REMEMBER THE THOROUGHBRED/IRISH DRAUGHT OPTION - 24 William Micklem Courage, Crosses & Fewer Calories Happy St Patricks Day Post... STUDY SUCCESS! There are no snakes in Ireland. St Patrick chased them all out of Ireland in the fifth century AD so there would be nothing to frighten the horses! Not that the Irish Draughts and Connemaras would worry too much about snakes. As shown by the thousands of Irish war horses they are a brave bunch. At the height of the Second World War about 1,000 horses a week were leaving the remount station on the Curragh to fight abroad. They distinguished themselves in the mud and gunfire and terror, and many were among the 350,000 lost by the Allied side. WORK, PLAY & COMPETITION For the Irish Draught and the Connemara it was very much survival of the fittest over the centuries, as the work horses and transport for the population over a rugged landscape that had few flat roads and certainly no dressage arenas. Of course the Irish spirit meant that the work horse also became the pleasure horses on high days and holidays. St Patricks Day hunts were legendary, and soon the competitive element meant that some TB blood was sneaked in, and then more blood for the point-to-points but always it involved jumping, and banks and water and an ample supply of mud, and the horse was always expected to look after the rider, whether there was drink taken or not! And always it involved courage and being sure footed. So it is no surprise that the Irish Draught, Connemara, Thoroughbred cross The Traditional Irish Horse (now recognised by Horse Sport Ireland and designated TIH) developed into the best event horse in the world since Badminton began in 1949. For the next fifty five years these horses ruled the Championships. Three quarters of the greatest horses of this period were this TIH cross, and the average TB element was also .and most would still be competitive today. These are not just horses that completed 5* events, they are all champions at the highest level: 45 GREAT 5* TB CROSSES LONG FORMAT Ave 78% TB - The bred is King! NB: Three quarters are Irish Draught crosses. BE FAIR 75%TB (Lucinda Green), BOLD MINSTREL 75%TB (William Haggard, Michael Plumb), CARAWICH 87.5%TB, (Aly Patterson, Jimmy Wofford), CHARISMA 97%%TB (Mark Todd), CONNAUGHT 69%TB (Philip Dutton), CORNISH GOLD 75%TB inc 12.5% Arab (Bridget Parker), CORNISHMAN 87.5%TB (Richard Meade, Mary Gordon Watson), COSMOPOLITAN 75%TB (William Fox Pitt), CUSTOM MADE 75%TB (Aaron Mannion, David OConnor), DARIEN POWERS 81.25%TB (Andrew Hoy), DURLAS EILE 75%TB (Eddie Boylan), EAGLE LION 70%TB (Bruce Davidson), ENNISKERRY IMP 90%TB (Phyllis Dawson), FOSTER 87.5%TB (Michael Page), GALAN DE SAUVAGRES 71.9%TB (Nickolas Touzaint), GILT EDGE 75%TB (Eric Smiley, David OConnor), GREAT OVATION 75%TB (Mark Phillips), HORTON POINT 75%TB (Lynne Bevan, Mark Todd), JENNY 75%TB (Juliet Joblin Purser), JENNY CAMP 75%TB (Capt Earl Thompson), KILKENNY 75%TB (Tommy Brennan & Jimmy Wofford), LAURIESTON 87.5%TB (Derek Allhusen, Richard Meade), LOCHINVAR 75%TB (Derek Allhusen), MASTER CRAFTSMAN 75%TB (Ginny Leng), MARCUS AURELIUS 50%TB, 50% CONN (Mary Ann Tauskey), MERELY-A- MONARCH 87.5%TB (Anneli Drummond Hay), MURPHY HIMSELF 75%TB (Ginny Leng, Ian Stark), MYSTIC MINSTREL 75%TB (Rachel Bayliss), NIGHT CAP 87.5%TB (Ginny Leng), PIRATE LION 75%TB (Bruce Davidson), PRIMMORES PRIDE 91.4 %TB (Pippa Funnell), REGENT LION 75% TB (Bruce Davidson) SPRING ALONG 76.5%TB (Daisy Dick), SIR WATTIE 75%TB (Ian Stark), STAR APPEAL 87.5%TB (Mary King), SUPREME ROCK 87.5%TB (Pippa Funnell), THE GRASSHOPPER 50%TB, 50% CONN (Ian Dudgeon, Michael Page), TOYTOWN 75%TB (Zara Phillips), WARRIOR 87.5%TB (Jane Holderness Roddam, WELTON GREYLAG 93.75%TB (Mark Todd), WELTON ENVOY 87.75%TB (Blyth Tait), WELTON HOUDINI 75%TB (Ginny Leng), WELTON ROMANCE 68.55TB (Ginny Thompson), WINDFALL 75%TB (Ingrid Klimke, Darren Chiacchia), WINSOME ADANTE 94%TB/Arab (Kim Severson) (NB: In post No.4 in this series I listed another 50 elite cross breeds from the start of the short format era in 2004 until now, and in Post No.1 also listed all the championship horses that the German team have used to become No 1 in the world. Once again the bottom line was the same, an average of 70% to 75% TB, and although fewer Irish Draught crosses they are still well represented.) Courage, endurance, soundness, forwardness are all so vital in performance horses, and boys o boys did this group show this. Long format.roads and tracks, steeplechase, longer cross countries, and even longer competitive lives in terms of years in action. These horses were super special. And the most important point of all is that this type of horse, albeit downsized a little in terms of ability and size, is the perfect horse for pleasure riding and the needs of the majority of riders who are pleasure riders and working at the lower levels of competition. Above all these riders want a safe conveyance, that will hack out as well as go in the arena, that will have a fifth leg and longevity, that will be an easy keeper. I want to see tens of thousands more people riding, because it is such a life enhancing sport and a sport for all and a sport for life, but to make this possible they need more of this type of horse, not those that are too big, too dumb and too hungry! Thinking of our planet . is it a fact that in general as horses get bigger they need more feed (2.5% of body weight) and we need to use less grain for our horses for the sake of the planet. Lucinda Green won Badminton in long format days with her first famous TB Be Fair, with him eating just 6lbs of hard food a day. Most horses of this type thrive well on a diet that is almost 100% grass and hay. They are more calorie efficient, and interestingly the statistics from the two world wars confirm thisonly the mules did better! HAPPY DAYS Today most of us are keeping our social distance or in lockdown, instead of dancing in the streets and singing a song or two with our friends, or visiting our families. But we are not going to war, which is a great mercy for both us and our horses. My very best wishes for a Happy St Patricks Day everyone. PS: ITS STILL HAPPENING..Padraig McCarthy (Irelands wonderfully talented World Silver Individual medalist on the TB/ID cross MR CHUNKY, and winner of the recent Barroca 4* in Portugal) is truly excited by a new horse, he describes as the best 5yo I have and the real deal. Called MGH JACKPOT.guess how he is bred. he is a 77% Thoroughbred 23% Irish Draught cross out of mare by the ID FLAGMOUNT KING! This mare is also the dam of Pippa Funnells MAJAS HOPE who was 16th at Badminton last year. Flagmount King is a full brother of two other Irish Draught stallions, John Halls Grade A Jumper FLAGMOUNT BOY and FLAGMOUNT DIAMOND, who my brother John and I started as a 3/4yo and I and Paddy Hughes (Horse First) were the first to ride. No bravery needed as he had the very best temperament and brain, not submissive but very willing. He was born ready to be an easy ride! Flagmount Diamond went on to sire numerous jumpers including one of Nick Skeltons favourite Grand Prix horses HOPES ARE HIGH, on which he won the richest competition in the world, the Du Maurier Masters Grand Prix in 1998. It was his third consecutive CSIO Grand Prix win. He was also in Britains Team at the World and European Championships but sadly was then injured. Hopes Are High was out of a CORNELSCOURT TB mare, who was by none other than that special racehorse and hugely influential jumping sire PERSIAN GULF! And so the very powerful TB/ID recipe lives on. Tomorrow my final post in this series.
