25.01.2022 Bushfires can create their own weather, generating ‘pyrocumulonimbus’ clouds and storms. These clouds can cause dangerous and unpredictable changes in f...ire behaviour, making the fire more difficult and hazardous to fight. So, how do they form? 1. A plume of hot, turbulent air and smoke rises. 2. Turbulence mixes cooler air into the plume, causing it to broaden and cool as it rises. 3. When the plume rises high enough, low atmospheric pressure causes its air to cool and cloud to form. 4. In an unstable atmosphere a thunderstorm can develop: pyrocumulonimbus cloud. 5. Rain in the cloud evaporates and cools when it comes into contact with dry air, producing a downburst. 6. Lightning may be produced and can ignite new fires. Find out more, including how our scientists are working to be able to predict them, in our blog: http://ow.ly/3t1i50x8nM6 For the latest fire weather warnings see http://ow.ly/tbTN50x8nz8, and follow advice from emergency services NSW Rural Fire Service Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES ABC Emergency

22.01.2022 Victorians are urged to prepare their homes for another very windy day, and keep an eye out for loose or falling tree branches. 21.01.2022 Are you guilty of leaving doors open at night? The photo below shows the outward-facing door after a kitchen fire. The inward-facing door was completely destr...oyed. The level of protection your doors give you in a fire depends on their quality, age and fire-protection qualities, however even the lowest quality door will give you vital time in a fire, but ONLY if they are SHUT. Also make sure you have a Smoke Alarm in your room! Add closing doors to your nighttime routine - it could save your life! Pete Learmonth

18.01.2022 To be able to fight fire, we must first understand fire and that is where Thomas Duff, Senior Research Scientist at CFA comes in. Victoria’s landscape is compl...ex, and we need scientists like Thomas to better understand what drives all types of fires, how they move and what resources we need to fight them. This information is then used to help our firefighters and protect them during our fire seasons. His role involves using a lot of science, from looking at how climate change and weather affects fire conditions to research and experiments done right here in Victoria. Thomas explains why he loves his job for #ScienceWeek.

16.01.2022 Friday the 13/11/20 was a tragic day for the team at OMY Beaconsfield. 7 fire trucks from Beaconsfield CFA, Berwick Fire Brigade CFA, CFA - Pakenham Fire Briga...de and Fire Rescue Victoria fire trucks from Dandenong (FS87) and Pakenham (FS93) were called shortly after lunch to a roof fire. Upon arriving the crews worked swiftly to contain the fire to the roof of the kitchen and dining room. Access to the high ceilings hindered extinguishment of the fire. Thankfully everyone was evacuated before crews arrived. #WeWorkAsOne CFA (Country Fire Authority) See more

10.01.2022 This is not something I would normally do/write, but today is kinda of crying out for it. It is RUOKDay It is World Suicide Prevention Day It also happens to be... the 35th anniversary of my younger brother's passing. (also a few other things going on but I'll spare you the details) And, y'know, Covid-19 and all the associated angst of that. (No, I'm not ok, but I will be, so, please, while I appreciate messages and comments of empathy, they really aren't necessary - this is not about that) Y'see, I'm not ok. I've already been asked a couple of times if I am, and I've replied, "Yes". Even publicly, earlier today on this page, I did that. There are a few reasons. 1) I run this public, community centred, very positive entity called A Guide to Cardinia. There is - particularly now, particularly on social media - an over abundance of negativity. AGTC is not a place for that. 2) I'm not ok, but I will be. I know I will be. I've been in this place before. I fight regularly with the black dog, and he just is not going to _ever_ win (because I'm a pig-headed, stubborn ba***rd. Just ask my ex ;) ) 3) This is my fight. You _cannot_ help. You cannot do anything about it. Your words. Your empathy, while appreciated, make very little difference to the struggle in my head. 4) Because I question the validity of my thoughts and feelings. A lifetime of being told "Time Heals All Wounds" will do that to you - and I can tell you right now, it does not. Some wounds will _never_ heal. You just have to live with them and learn not to pick at them. So why am I now writing this? Why am I making a very personal post on this page, which is not about me, but about you? I'm writing this because when YOU share something about #RUOKDay or #WorldSuicidePreventionDay you need to be aware that sometimes that isn't enough. You need to pick up that phone and make the damn call, and really listen to the person you're talking to, even when they say, "Yeah, I'm ok". Because sometimes, they're really not. Even if that means just reassuring them that you are there if they need, and encourage them to reach out. Reaching out is the often hardest part. Also, you need to know, when I post the memes, and the positive messages in the mornings, and the funny stuff, that if you're struggling, they are there for you. And I am right there with you, every step of the way. R U OK Day Dancing With The Black Dog Men’s group

05.01.2022 A SEVERE WEATHER WARNING has been issued for damaging winds across parts of Victoria on Sunday 30th August. Remember, for storm emergency assistance, call the S...ES on 132 500. The safest place to be during a storm is indoors. VICSES encourages the public to monitor weather conditions and if exercising, to do so either before the storm impacts or once it has passed your local area. 05.01.2022 Today marks the 38-year anniversary of the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires that occurred on February 16, 1983 Ash Wednesday is a day that we will never forg...et. A tragic day where 75 people died in ferocious bushfires across South Australia and Victoria. In Upper Beaconsfield alone, 21 lives were lost. 176 of the then 230 homes were destroyed (by comparison there are over 1,100 homes now), 92 sq kms burnt, 500 kms of fencing lost and approximately 1,000 cattle/sheep lost. 12 of those who perished in Upper Beaconsfield were volunteer fire fighters from the Narre Warren Fire Brigade CFA and Panton Hill CFA fire brigades who were working on a steep ridge in Critchley Parker Jnr Reserve near St Georges Rd when the wind change came through just before 9pm. Nearby localities including Guys Hill, Dewhurst, Belgrave South, Belgrave Heights, Narre Warren East and Cockatoo were also hit hard with many homes destroyed and the loss of a further 6 lives lost at the Cockatoo fire including one volunteer fire fighter from the Nar Nar Goon Fire Brigade - CFA fire brigade. Our thoughts are with the families and friends who lost loved ones on this day along with the many other residents and emergency workers who were deeply affected, many who still bear the scars and pain from the events of that devistating day 38 years ago. May those gone rest in peace and never be forgotton Please pause and take a minute to reflect at 8.50pm tonight

04.01.2022 The Pakenham fire brigade would like to introduce you to our latest old/new addition to our fleet. The BA Support bus. The brigade decided to update and retrofi...t our existing Ford Transit bus which was previously used as crew transport, into what you see here. The bus now has the capacity to respond to large Fires or emergencies where Breathing apparatus is being used carrying 21 spare air cylinders for crews to use. It also has shelving space to carry additional equipment which may include portable lighting, cleaning equipment etc. this would not have been possible without the generosity of the Pakenham and surrounding community’s donations Thank you MFI Service Bodies and Warning Systems #cfavic See more
