25.01.2022 As the Corner Inlet Citizen of the year, Kerry Senior was also nominated as a the South Gippsland Citizen of the Year. Kerry is Captain of the Fish Creek & District Fire Brigade. Congratulations Kerry, a very worthy recipient! Here is the blurb from her nomination: Kerry Senior has been an active member of her local community for many years. She started off as a junior member of the Fish Creek Fire Brigade, and from there, she has only become more involved.... Kerry is an active member of the Fish Creek Fire Brigade who has held a number of Officer positions. She is currently the first female Captain of the Fish Creek FIre Brigade. Through her CFA volunteering, she has been part of the Road Accident Rescue Unit and assisted many members through her role as a Training Officer. By day, Kerry is an Advanced Support Paramedic with Ambulance Victoria. With that training, she has been able to train members of the community on CPR and other resuscitation techniques. This is held as part of the annual heart smart program. Her Paramedic training has also allowed her to volunteer at the Fish Creek Tea Cosy Festival as a first aid repsonder. She has even used her paramedicine training to help new paramedics learn the ropes. During the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal, Kerry is out in the community collecting donations, and has done so for many years. She is also passionate about fire safety, each year taking time to deliver the 'Fire Safe in Schools' program. Despite Kerry's demanding shift work job, she continues to devote considerable amounts of time to her community through her leadership and commitment to the Fish Creek Fire Brigade. Give Kerry an opportunity to participate in an even she loves and she will give it her all. From fire training and information evenings to CPR and public AED training, Kerry will do it all. In 2020 she even took the time to sew over 150 face masks, donating many of them to be sold to raise funds for the South Gippsland Hospital with the remainder given to CFA members and others in the local community. Her caring and compassionate nature makes her a great asset to her local community.

18.01.2022 CFA has received a number of calls from community members regarding bonfires to mark the ‘Spark in the Dark’ event this evening. We appreciate those who are tha...nking our frontline workers, but urge you to keep fire safety front of mind. As today’s conditions are windy in some areas we are urging those who wish to participate to not do so by lighting bonfires or using fire pits. If you are choosing to light a candle, please ensure it is monitored by an adult and extinguished properly. You might like to mark the event by using a torch or outside light. Thank you and stay safe.

08.01.2022 Candles, incense and oil burners have become a staple in Australian homes and they are often used for social, cultural and religious practices. With increased time spent indoors during the cooler months CFA is reminding residents to use these products safely. Residents need to keep in mind that although candles and oil burners can be a pleasant addition to the home, leaving them unattended could be disastrous. It’s important to only use candles, incense and oil burners on a s...table, non-combustible surface but to also keep curtains and other items away from open flames at all times. Ensure you always extinguish candles, incense, oil burners and cigarettes before leaving home or going to sleep. Further information www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/fires-in-the-home See more

05.01.2022 New research by Dr Ken Strahan (and supported by CFA) gives fascinating insight into the psychology of how people prepare and respond to bushfires. It identifies a variety of influencing factors including risk perception, stakeholder perceptions, the perceived effectiveness of preparedness actions, self-reliance, experience and intended response. The research has an impact on how messaging about being prepared for a bushfire is tailored to suit our communities. It also discusses how these archetypes manage the recovery stage. A detailed report on the research is available on the publications page of CFA’s website: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au//b018ce06-a74c-55af-4e69-d5dbbe
