25.01.2022 Great work from the team at Kyneton Fire Brigade (CFA)

22.01.2022 This month Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade is welcoming their new Ford Ranger Cab Chassis with 4WD capacity. The brigade determined that outsourcing a purpose-built rear service body would meet both the business and operational requirements of the brigade. The Forward Control Vehicle (FCV) is used to assist with command and control at a grass fires or bush fires, general incidents, servicing of FEM clients, crew transport to training sessions and attending community safety even...ts in the local area. Brigade 1st Lieutenant Peter Habersatt said the new vehicle was purchased with funds raised by servicing CFA FEM customers work within the local area and donations generously donated by the local community. The new FCV will be added to the Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade fleet and it has the most up to date & state of the art features to better serve the community of Wyndham and wider Victoria. 16.01.2022 ** REMINDER to complete before end of December 2020** In April 2020 the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) announced new restricted classes for the routine servicing of fire maintenance equipment. These included a restricted class for the routine servicing of hoses reels for people who are not licensed as plumbers. What does this mean for CFA FEM brigades?... This restricted class for hose reel maintenance takes into account the high-quality training, accreditation and skills maintenance program members completed through CFA prior to conducting CFA FEM work. This means that there is now a requirement for any CFA FEM member to be registered with VBA in order to complete maintenance on hose reels as part of their CFA FEM responsibilities. Individual members will need to register with the VBA to obtain a registration. For CFA Volunteers performing the work as volunteers, the fee has been waived. This registration allows VBA to confirm your competence to complete hose reel maintenance work in line with CFA’s FEM training. This registration will need to be carried when performing hose reel maintenance and produced if requested by a VBA Inspector. To register you need to have completed the CFA FEM Accreditation Course and/or completed skills maintenance in the last five years. Further information will be available on the CFA FEM intranet. If you have any further questions please contact your Community Safety Officer or the FEM Hotline on 1300-363-661 We hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy during this time. Have a great weekend everyone. - CSO Paul DiMartino

15.01.2022 We have had some absolutely fantastic information sent through from Scoresby Fire Brigade CFA about their Scoresby Hose Layer. What a fantastic achievement by their FEM team over the years and into the future: SCORESBY FIRE BRIGADE , FIRE EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND THE STATES ONLY DEDICATED HOSELAYER. Scoresby Fire Brigade set up the Fire Equipment Maintenance section of the brigade in the 1970’s. There was a growing industrial area within the brigade boundary, Scoresby condu...cted two Extinguisher Days per year, where larger premises were serviced by all the members of Scoresby Fire Brigade. Normal businesses were serviced by one or two volunteer FEM servicemen. In the late 80’s the brigade extended its’ FEM business across the outer metro area, and at peak had 3 full time service personnel with two admin staff to deal with nearly 2000 clients. The brigade was making quite a bit of money, but we had plans. We approached Knox Fire Brigades Group with a Specialisation Plan in 1988 . This involved each brigade in Knox picking a specialist area to work in, Scoresby selected hoselaying, most of you would have used Bayswater B.A., or Montrose Flare Gas Equipment, these all grew out of that particular project. 1991 Scoresby produced its first hoselayer with 8,800 feet or 2.7 kilometres of 90 mm and 65 mm hose. This vehicle cost $128,000.00 on the road fully funded by Scoresby’s FEM income. This hoselayer has attended a multitude of calls across the State from the Longford Gas Explosion to three fires at Hazelwood. It was a lot of work to use, restow, wash, repair and again restow by hand into the truck. In 2012 we started planning for the current hoselayer, we bought to Australia for the first time 100mm extruded hose (2.3 Kms total) and a vehicle that this time, picked up the hose for us. To bring this technology on line cost the brigade $633,000.00 and was again fully funded by the FEM funds, without having to ask community or CFA to support us with donations or grants. A great effort. Our FEM income has also paid for three FCV’s, station/work wear and a myriad of other equipment for training and making our fire brigade life Working Smarter Not Harder! FEM has given Scoresby the ability to stand on our own feet financially and this is a godsend on a day to day basis, putting our funds back into supporting our community and the State of Victoria. 13.01.2022 We are getting more photos of brigades servicing vehicle setups lately. We are all (not so) secretly extinguisher nerds at FEM so we hope you enjoy them as much as we do Today we have Melton's van with some internal shots of their layout and capability. Give the Melton team a wave if you see it around.

09.01.2022 Afternoon all, In addition to our post yesterday, the information is now available to CFA members through the FEM Intranet Page; https://www.members.cfa.vic.gov.au/mycfa/Show?pageId=fem... Have a good and safe weekend everyone.

08.01.2022 Alexandra Fire brigade recently purchased & outfit a Hyundai Load van to act as our primary FEM vehicle. The cost of the van and its outfitting came from FEM funds. As well as being a fully equipped FEM Service vehicle, it can also provide the following functions. : Crew transport. The vehicle is a comfortable six seater with space for six crew away bags. : Operational support (deliver meals etc to water points etc) : Welfare. Provide... support to welfare crews. : Community engagement. Street corner meetings etc Great to see the brigade develop over the years and now be able to purchase their own FEM vehicle. Congratulations to Bruce & team at Alexandra Fire Brigade If any FEM brigade have exciting news worth sharing please let me know. My email is [email protected] CSO Paul DiMartino

05.01.2022 Times change, but not always as much as we think. Here is a photo of Owen Etherton (Left) and Eddie Bradford (Right) performing fire plug maintenance with the Geelong CFA back in 1953. Owen spent 6 years as a Volunteer and would later go on to have a 38 year career with the CFA - first as a Portable Fire Appliance (PFA) fireman for 12 years before becoming the inaugural Officer in Charge of the Special Service Section for the following 20 years, before retiring in 1982.... PFA would eventually became Fire Equipment Maintenance as it is today.
