25.01.2022 Each year CFA sees an increase in the number of chimney fires from both fireplaces and wood heaters. Over time a black tar-like residue called creosote, which is highly flammable can build up and can block chimneys. To reduce the risk of fire you should: - Use a torch to check for creosote build-up or obstructions regularly - Have your chimney professionally cleaned annually - Only burn dry, clean wood - Don’t leave your fire to burn after you have gone to bed or left the ho...use Chimney fires can quickly turn into house fires so the few minutes spent making sure everything is safe could be one of the most important fire safety actions you take this winter. 24.01.2022 Apparently we've become a little famous, with media outlets using photos from last night and contacting us for comment. While it's great to have some recognitio...n for what we do, it's important to remember we are a small cog in a giant machine. So, a giant shout out to all of the others who don't get the glory - of course our fellow volunteers, but equally as important are our CFA career colleagues who are right there beside us, the DEWLP, Parks Vic and Forest Fire Management crews who absolutely bust their butts for very long shifts, the private contractors driving their bulldozers in places I would never go, the behind the scenes staff at CFA HQ making sure we have everything we need, the mechanical staff keeping us going, the air crew and ground crews of the multiple aircraft, the locals, in particular the Rosedale Speedway committee who make sure their facilities are accessible and working well, the Ambulance Victoria crews who sit around in boring places and are there just in case one of us gets hurt, the wonderful people who make us food and coffee, the water cartage contractors...the list goes on. The media only ever show the exciting bits. Not the massive amount of work and effort behind the scenes...often we have the easiest job! A pat on the back to you all. Captain Dave.
