25.01.2022 update we have had to change the date from the 20th to the 19th due to member commitments and availability. Sorry for any inconvenience please look at our latest post for the link to the locations we will be stopping Hello residents of Pakenham as your aware COVID has put a strain on how we as a brigade normally operate and we haven’t been able to get out in the community like we normally would. BUT we have some good news, at the present time we are allowed to do our annual Santa run (please note this is dependent on any future restrictions) this will take place on the 20th December starting at 10am and will be the same route as last year. So please keep an eye out for the maps which will be posted on our page in the coming week.

25.01.2022 On the 21/01 just before 11pm Pakenham CFA were paged to assist Fire Rescue Victoria station 93 (pakenham) to a reported shed fire at Jamison crt. Luckily all occupants and their pets were able to escape, firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the garage although the rest of the house contained smoke damage. This is a timely reminder to have an evacuation plan not just for bushfires but for your home or workplace. ... Crews from Toomuc Fire Brigade - CFA, Nar Nar Goon Fire Brigade - CFA, pakenham BA support and Ambulance Victoria also attended. CFA (Country Fire Authority) #WeWorkAsOne credit Edward Finn

24.01.2022 Today we introduce you to the 5th and final member of our Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb team Brayden Carr. Brayden has been a volunteer with Pakenham for nearly 1.5 years and always puts up his hand to help out with any task and this is no exception. We asked Brayden why he wanted to participate and this was his response. Raising awareness for mental health I can honestly say I never thought I would be so passionate about it till now. As some may not know I have battled ...with depression for 4 years now and at the start of the year I finally started to get help through my family, girlfriend and the CFA. Since I joined the CFA their main goal is to look out for each other as well as the community and seeing that I’m getting on top of all my mental health. Seeing the stair climb come out I didn’t have to think twice about joining the event, This is the start of a yearly thing for me now!!!!!. We would like to thank everyone who has donated already but the fight is still not over so far our team has climbed over 7K stairs. 24.01.2022 Warm weekends often call for celebration, camping, and recreational fires like campfires and barbecues. If care isn’t taken when celebrating around fire, the impact can be disastrous. CFA (Country Fire Authority) and Fire Rescue Victoria visited The Alfred to talk to the incredible doctors and nurses who treat patients in the burns unit.

22.01.2022 Today It's R U OK Day, a reminder that every day is a day to start a conversation that could change a life. Today we're calling on Australians to learn what to say after R U OK? so they can keep the conversation going when someone says they're not OK. There's more to say after R U OK?... Learn what to say when listening with an open mind Learn what to say when encouraging action Learn what to say when checking in Learn how to continue a conversation that could change a life. When we know what to say next we can help someone open up and find pathways to support long before they're in crisis. Learn what to say next and help us move closer to our vision of a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide. 21.01.2022 Tonight with the weather being so great our new recruits got to do some outside training doing drafting from the lake. Drafting is when we draw water from a static source eg. lake or dam to fill the tank or pump directly onto a fire. Well done and welcome to all our new recruits, we look forward to seeing you all on the trucks in the coming months. If anyone is interested in being a volunteer in the cfa you can do so by clicking this link. https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/volunteer-careers/volunteers

21.01.2022 This Coming Monday the brigade will commence our our important pre-summer skills drills. As an emergency services provider we have been granted permission to commence this mandatory training which will be conducted under strict Covid compliant guidelines. These restrictions include having a COVID safe coordinator at each session, everything is cleaned and sanitized before and after each session and correct PPE/PPC is worn at all times. There will be a maximum of 5 people (including the coordinator) at each session. So if you happen to see us over the next coming weeks give us a socially distant wave and say hello. Thank you and Stay safe everyone.

21.01.2022 The last 48hrs has been very busy for not only Pakenham but the wider Cardinia group of brigades with 3 significant structure fires. Pakenham was requested to assist with firefighting operations as well as BA (breathing apparatus) support. This leads us to remind everyone to have working smoke alarms and a home evacuation plan. Do you and your family know what to do if you hear your smoke alarm? 20.01.2022 As stated yesterday this week we are introducing you to our members participating in this years Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb. Today we would like you to meet Firefighter Russell Cotterell, Russell has been a Volunteer with Pakenham for nearly 1.5 years. We asked him why he was participating and this was his response. When asked why am I participating, all I have to do is think of my family & my wife’s family. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate, I myself suffer from it.... Mental disorders are serious conditions which can affect your thinking, mood, and behaviour. They may be occasional or long-lasting. They can affect your ability to relate to others and function each day. Mental disorders are common; more than half of all Australians will be diagnosed with one at some time in their life. We all know someone who suffers in one way or another. To partner myself with Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb 2020, to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute, Lifeline and 000 Foundation is something I am extremely excited about. I have met some pretty awesome people in my short time with the CFA and if I can assist in anyway then it is no big feat really. We know times are tough but if you can spare any money please click the link and donate it is for a great cause. https://www.firefighterclimb.org.au/donatio//cfa/pakenham/ #cfavic #melbournefirefighterstairclimb #itaintweaktospeak #RUOK

11.01.2022 This year Women’s Health Week is running from 7-11 September and is a great reminder to take time out to check in on your health. Women’s Health Week is focusing on the health of your heart and blood vessels. Heart disease is a leading killer of Australian women, taking the lives of three times as many women than breast cancer. This is partly because heart disease is often not recognised in women. The reasons for this include: - Women often develop symptoms of heart disease... at a much later stage in the illness than men. - Symptoms can be vaguer or non-specific. - Women are less likely to seek help quickly. - Some diagnostic tests for heart disease are less accurate in women than in men. - Some health professionals may be less likely to check for heart disease in women. Women can take better care of their health by: Ensuring blood pressure is under control - Managing cholesterol levels - Quit smoking - Start exercising - Eat a balanced diet - Go for regular Heart Health Checks when you’re over 45 For more information click here: https://www.womenshealthweek.com.au/ #WomensHealthWeek #cfavic CFA (Country Fire Authority) See more

09.01.2022 Today we would like to introduce you to the 3rd member participating in the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb. Adrian Rowe, Who is not only a volunteer firefighter but also a member of Pakenham SES. When asked why he decided to participate this is what Adrian has to say. I’m Adrian Rowe. I’m a firefighter at Pakenham CFA. This is my first year doing the stair climb and it won’t be the last. I’m doing this because I have had a cousin pass away from suicide in 2012. Suicide ...is a big soft spot for me, for someone to be in that headspace to not want to be around anymore makes me want to make people more aware of depression, ptsi and people suffering from suicide, which is all too common at the moment. If you ever have any spare time ask someone R U OK?, it could make a big impact and great conversation starter. 08.01.2022 September 11th 2001 This is a day we will never forget, this is a day that will be etched in history, this is the day the world stood still. On this day... 19 years ago 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights.... 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. We also remember the many emergency service workers that aided the rescue and recovery efforts in the following weeks and months who have subsequently died from 9/11 related illnesses. We remember 2,977 innocent people that died that day. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted. May they Rest In Peace. #wewillneverforget #911

05.01.2022 The Bureau has confirmed that a La Niña has formed in the tropical Pacific, with climate models suggesting it's likely to remain until at least the end of 2020.... La Niña typically brings: A wetter-than-average spring and summer to northern and eastern Australia; Cooler-than-average days and warmer-than-average nights; Increased tropical cyclone numbers; An earlier start to the monsoon and wet season; Average fire risk; and Less intense but more prolonged heatwaves across southern Australia. But every La Niña event is different. Once La Niña develops it usually finishes the following autumn, but some events have lasted 2 or 3 years. Rainfall can also vary considerably. During the last big event of 2010-2012 rainfall was above average across most of Australia (we saw Category 5 tropical cyclone Yasi devastate far north Queensland communities during this period), whereas rainfall during the La Niña event of 2008-2009 was much more patchy. Read more in our Climate Driver Update: http://ow.ly/ktf650BDUny

05.01.2022 This is an interesting read from the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO it explains some of the climate changes we have experienced over time and why these changes have lead to longer than normal fire seasons and in some cases more extreme fire weather it is definitely worth the read.
