10.01.2022 THE GREAT ESCAPE DAILY INSIGHT Day 5 Start Location Tooleybuc Hotel First Car departs 8.00am Total distance 403.52 kms... Breakfast Location Tooleybuc Hotel Lunch Location Royal Hotel Barham (NSW) Dinner Location Finley Bowling Club MORNING We say good-bye to Tooleybuc and Scott and his team at the Tooleybuc Hotel and thank you for great tucker for dinner and brekkie. Now we cross over the lovely bridge over the Murray River, take some great photos of this magnificent bit of engineering. Now into the Republic of Victoria on a transport towards Swan Hill. Fuel in Swan Hill. After Swan Hill we are heading towards our lunch stop at Barham, but before getting there we travel through some of the Lake District and we also follow the river on some great bush roads. Swan Hill got its name via strange circumstance. Named Swan Hill by Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1830, he was kept awake by the call of the swans, I wonder what it would have been called if they were BATS. Now Swan Hill was an important port in the days of the paddle-steamers, so it did have something going for it. LUNCH Now we have arrived at this lovely designed Barham Hotel to an equally lovely presented lunch, so enjoy. Fuel in town. Barham is on the NSW side and Koondrook is on the Victorian side, Barham was settled in 1843 when Edward Green took up 54 hectares in NSW -naming it Barham after his wife’s maiden name The neighbouring town the other side of the river called Koondrook; this was settled n 1881 by farmers who were flow-over from the gold rush period. It is linked by another one of these wonderful looking bridges over the Murray. Now transport out of town, then onto a good Wacko following some pretty bush roads heading towards Moama. Moama has a chequered history when settled in 1845, it was known as Maidens Punt named after James Maiden punt owner, station manager, publican and postmaster it was renamed Moama in 1851. I guess we know why, greed wouldn’t have anything to do with it. Picking up another Wacko we are travelling towards Tocumwal and out on the Murray Valley Trail then start heading towards Finley. DINNER Finley is John Milne (Mule) and Widge hometown and they have been keen Great Escape entrants over many years but now retired, but they were great help in getting and marking tracks and making suggestions around the area. The local Wiradjuai aboriginals called it ‘Carratha’ meaning Place of Pine, was renamed Finley in 1870’s after F.G. Finley who was the surveyor of the area. Dinner will be at the Finley Bowling Club where we will enjoy a lovely diner into some scary fun, competition as we all enjoy Scary Night Bowls; watch out for Fox’s, cheats and ball throwing mad rally people. Don’t forget your SCARY get up costumes. Or maybe it’s you as you are!!

10.01.2022 Great days and great tracks and everyone makes an effort on theme night on the Great Escape 2019 stay tuned for Friday 13th theme night in Finley

04.01.2022 At CFA we love good news and today we have some great news to share. The Government will fund Orkambi for children 2-5 years and Symdeko for people 12 years and... older with either two copies of F508del or one F508del and one residual mutation. We are very lucky to live in Australia because many overseas CF communities don’t have access to these life changing treatments. Thanks must go to our Health Minister Mr Hunt and his Dept staff. Thanks also to Vertex for creating these drugs that will add decades to every CF life. Now is the time to ask your clinician if you would benefit from Orkambi or Symdeko. Access available from tomorrow. See more

01.01.2022 THE GREAT ESCAPE DAILY INSIGHT Day 8 Start Location Cooma Car Club First Car departs 8.00am Total distance 320.12 kms... Breakfast Location Cooma Car Club Lunch Location Tilba Valley Winery & Ale House Dinner Location Steampacket Hotel COOMA TO NELLIGEN via TILBA VALLEY WINERY FOR LUNCH MORNING Hope you had a good look around at the impressive assortment of vehicles on display while you enjoyed a great brekkie by Tony and his team. Tony and his team did our enjoyable dinner last night in the Motor Inn. Well, what did you think of the new game I have introduced to the GE, called the Great Escape Callcutta, a bit more fun within competition and the opportunity to test your skills, memory on rally sheets? On the run from Cooma to Tilba the track goes close to Bermagui and there is fuel available as there is no fuel ay Tilba nor Nelligen. Just a little about Bermagui. Those of you that read Western Books, Comics will know of the very successful US writer Zane Grey who lived in Bermagui. He helped to bring international tourist to Bermagui in search of big game fishing. Now as we set out for the run to the Tilba Valley Winery and Ale House for lunchwe will be driving on shire roads, private property, national parks a state forest road. Just be careful of your speed through these various properties, watch out for stock and take it slow on the rough stuff, also lots of GATES don’t forget the rules of gates. Keep a good eye on your fuel we do go into Moruya fuel is available. Tilba Tilba is the original name of the district and is said to be a Thawa Aboriginal term meaning many waters. The town was settled during the Australian Gold Rushes of the nineteen’s century, it is also hometown of the Bates family of political renown, you may recall we lost a Prime Minister and his wife married Mr Bates. The rich volcanic soil around the mountains became the basis for very successful dairy farms and the villages of Tilba and Central Tilba were built with local eucalyptus timber. The heritage villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba offer an opportunity to step back in time and visit perfectly preserved heritage villages. LUNCH Tilba Valley Winery and Ale House. The winery is magnificently situated on the shores of Lake Corunna with the vines making it a lovely setting. The new owners are going about making it a better placethey have only been in about 12 months and are extremely keen to make the winery a place to come and enjoy the great selection of food and cellar door. We say a big thank you to Carly and her team who have made this a wonderful stop and rest while enjoying a great lunch. Now it is straight into some great rally tracks after lunch so onward with a Wacko and onto Nelligen. We head out on some great tracks through forests and creek crossing, hope there is not too much rain, as there is some great scenery as we go through national parks and state forests, then onto some farms, so again watch for stock. Following the Wacko, we came out close to Moruya and fuel is available, remember there is no fuel at Nelligen, and it will be after lunch time tomorrow before you will get fuel again. Those that have not been to Nelligen will be surprised at its history and beauty. No one is sure how Nelligen got its name. By the late 1620’s the local river was known as Nelligen Creek now the Clyde River. It was a busy port serving Braidwood farming district and the Araluen goldfields. The history of the village is linked to the beautiful water ways that are now used for recreational use. You will be able to read a lot of history about the town and the pub The Steam Packet Hotel. Remember no fuel in town, the closest will be Batemans Bay approx. 10 kms away
