25.01.2022 There's been massive demand on energy grids during heatwave conditions across the east coast - many thanks to our power station Members for keeping the lights and air conditioners on

25.01.2022 "I'd like to see politicians like Michelle Landry and Matt Canavan stop playing politics and doing something proper about getting people in the coal mining industry permanent jobs." Thanks for speaking out about ther permanent casual rort, Bob. You can too, by emailing your MP at www.protectcasualminers.com.au

25.01.2022 BHP'S JOB CUTS IN DISGUISE - BHP has told labour hire workers at Daunia mine they will no longer be required after autonomous vehicles are introduced early next year. They aren't coming clean about how many labour hire jobs are being lost - all the while saying automation isn't leading to job cuts. This is disgraceful treatment of labour hire workers, many have worked loyally at BHP mine sites like Daunia for years with no opportunity for a permanent job. Communities deserve to know the real toll automation is taking on jobs. We support new technologies in our industries but the benefits need to be shared with workers and communities, not just siphoned off to shareholders and executives.

24.01.2022 This month's Common Cause covers our great win against BHP at Goonyella Riverside. It means that the roles of Field Officer and Controller created to manage new autonomous trucks will be for EA workers, not staff. This means more opportunities for skills and jobs for the current workforce as automated technology is rolled out. The Fair Work Commission found the new roles are still coal mining jobs in line with the Award and EA, despite the use of new technologies. Well done! https://commoncause.cfmeu.org.au//union-win-new-bhp-autom/

23.01.2022 Pressure from our Protect Casual Miners campaign has forced a number of LNP politicians out of the woodwork on casualisation in mining. Unfortunately their arguments don’t hold up. Our latest Common Cause includes this Guide to LNP Bulls**t about Casualisation - keep it handy! https://commoncause.cfmeu.org.au//your-guide-to-lnp-bulls/

22.01.2022 We welcomed BHP's decision to provide paid leave for vulnerable Indigenous and older workers during the pandemic. The problem is, vulnerable labour hire workers at BHP sites stopped receiving pay at the end of June, leaving them without any pay for months. As Northern District President Peter Jordan says, the pandemic 'has exposed BHP’s disgraceful practice of employing at least half its workforce through insecure and casualised labour hire arrangements, resulting in serious financial loss for these workers.' It's discrimination and the Union is fighting to recover their pay: https://www.afr.com//bhp-accused-of-ageism-racism-over-cov

20.01.2022 On this day in 1975 the Whitlam Government was sacked by the Governor General. It was an extraordinary attack on a democratically elected Government and led Australia into a constitutional crisis.

20.01.2022 November 14 marks the anniversary of the 1996 Gretley disaster, when four Northern District mineworkers were engulfed by an inrush of water. They were working to an inaccurate map, and unknowingly dug into an older flooded mine. Remembering Edward Batterham, John Hunter, Mark Kaiser and Damon Murray - Rest In Peace https://me.cfmeu.org.au/n/anniversary-gretley-disaster-1996

19.01.2022 Well done to Graeme and Marty from our Clyde Gore Bay Lodge in Sydney for taking a stand for permanent jobs. If you haven't emailed your MP yet, now is the time! It's urgent, it's easy and it will make a difference. Just follow the steps at www.protectcasualminers.com.au

19.01.2022 Find out how they are burning coal to produce hydrogen in the Latrobe Valley - with almost no carbon emissions in the process. Could this be a boom industry for Australia? --- Listen to the full episode of the CFMEU Mining and Energy podcast here: https://bit.ly/36jVzbF... Or search 'CFMEU' in Apple Podcasts, or Spotify!

19.01.2022 Good morning! Great to see Blackwater Lodge fighting for permanent jobs

18.01.2022 Columbian coal mineworkers have gone on strike after rejecting the introduction of a 'death shift' that will add 72 days per year extra work time with no wage increase. We stand in solidarity with our Columbian comrades against Glencore, BHP and Anglo American.

17.01.2022 It's happening everywhere JOIN YOUR UNION https://membership.cfmeu.org.au/join/mining-and-energy

15.01.2022 Good news The Queensland government has given final approval to a $1 billion coalmine. Pembroke Resources has been granted mining leases for its 25,000-hectare Olive Downs Coking Coal Project by the state government following federal environmental approval in May.... Olive Downs is expected to employ 1000 people to mine coking coal used in steelmaking. It will include an open-cut metallurgical coalmine, coal handling and preparation plant and an 18km rail spur.

14.01.2022 Yep BHP's agreements for Operations Services (in-house labour hire) workers are not only unfair (with worse pay and conditions than for permanents), the Fair Work Commission has also ruled they are unlawful. Well done to our legal team for a big, important win against BHP to defend conditions in our industry. It's time for a better deal.

13.01.2022 Today is the 10th anniversary of New Zealand's Pike River disaster, when an explosion tragically killed 29 mineworkers. A Royal Commission found that de-regulation of mine safety laws (and the abolition of the role of Union Safety Inspectors) were at the foundation of this disaster. For the grieving families, there has been a long campaign for some sort of closure. Rest In Peace

12.01.2022 Patrick has admitted that no medical supplies have been held up as a result of their dispute with the MUA. Patrick and the Morrison Government should get a grip. Rather than demonising unions and scaremongering they should head to the negotiating table. Let's see some industrial justice! https://www.smh.com.au//patrick-admits-no-medical-shortage Great cartoon by Sam Wallman.

10.01.2022 Let's hear it for Moura Lodge! Taking a stand for permanent jobs in mining. It's easy to make your voice heard, go to www.protectcasualminers.com.au and email your MP.

10.01.2022 Great to see CFMEU, AMWU - Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union and ETU - The Electrical Trades Union delegates at Callide mine standing together against the permanent casual rort #solidarity Support the campaign and tell your MP to take action at www.protectcasualminers.com.au

09.01.2022 Adam Burling from our Callide Valley Lodge was passing through Barcaldine when he noticed the flag flying at the Workers Heritage Centre had seen better days. The Eureka flag is such an important symbol for workers, he organised to purchase and deliver a new flag, with Lodge and District support. Read more about Adam's trip and the proud history of Barcaldine in this month's Common Cause: https://commoncause.cfmeu.org.au//eureka-callide-valley-f/

09.01.2022 "Attorney-General Christian Porter and national employers have welcomed a High Court decision to grant special leave to labour hire firm WorkPac to appeal a landmark casuals ruling. But the union representing miners said the decision would further unfairly delay justice for mineworkers twice found by the Federal Court to have been employed unlawfully as casuals." ----... Says it all! We have the full force of the business lobby and the Federal Government trying to overturn our big court wins for casual mineworkers. But we will keep fighting. The High Court today granting leave for an appeal by WorkPac is disappointing and will delay fair compensation for affected casuals - but we will intervene in the appeal and we won't give up until we defeat this toxic work model.

09.01.2022 Good news for Emerald, with Gregory Crinum underground mine scheduled to reopen mid next year.

08.01.2022 "Nothing would make me happier than giving everybody time off, it really would. Unfortunately, you are too valuable to let go, even for a short period of time. Sounds like the Betoota Bottle Shop & Nang Boutique has been taking a leaf out of the mining industry's playbook. Is this your boss? How hard is it for you to get leave at Christmas? Do you get extra pay make it worth working Christmas? Or should the industry go back to shutting down for a couple of days?

08.01.2022 Our Member Graeme Edwards was killed at work two years ago undertaking what should have been a routine maintenance task at Yallourn power station. On 12 November 2018 an arc flash occurred while Graeme was installing a high voltage circuit breaker, killing him almost instantly. EnergyAustralia has admitted Graeme did nothing wrong and they failed to provide a safe workplace. Yet WorkSafe Victoria is not pursuing a prosecution over Graeme's death. We share his family's hurt and astonishment at this decision and our Victorian District is calling on the Department of Public Prosecutions to step in https://www.latrobevalleyexpress.com.au//familys-push-fo/

07.01.2022 This weekend is the Labour Day holiday weekend in NSW, ACT and SA. We are celebrating the 1856 victory of workers who took a stand for fairer working conditions, demanding shorter working hours. Read here why it was known as '8 Hours Day': https://www.nma.gov.au/defining-mo/resources/eight-hour-day

07.01.2022 After a long legal process, the Fair Work Commission has agreed with us that BHP's Operations Services Enterprise Agreements are not valid. These were always unfair agreements, that were pushed through in a sneaky way and did not provide Operations Services workers with the pay and conditions they deserve for the hard work they perform on BHP mine sites. It is time for BHP's OS workforce to have a real say over their working conditions. That's what we are fighting for. This is a great win, proudly funded by CFMEU members

06.01.2022 Simon and Ron work side by side doing the same job in a coal mine. However, Ron is casual labour hire and gets no sick leave, holiday pay, penalty rates for night shift and is paid less than Simon. How is that fair?
