20.01.2022 #MondayMotivation If you want to succeed in the long term, think about your aspirations on day one. This is such a beautiful message. It can be applied to the workplace as well. In order to be a good employee, think of your first day in the firm. Your intentions, your motivation, your excitement. Chief Rabbi Mirvis @Chief_Rabbi @ChiefRabbi #CFO2Grow #morethanacfo

19.01.2022 Life is full of setbacks, both on and off the court, and tennis taught me the importance of never giving up. It can sometimes be hard to realise in the moment, but there are so many lessons that your sport can teach you that you can apply to other aspects of life. So much of my entrepreneurial mindset was fostered by my approach as an athlete.Hard work, consistency, resilience it all applies directly to how I’ve approached business and this next stage of my life. @mariasharapova @bodyandsoul_au #CFO2Grow #MorethanaCFO #entrepreneur

19.01.2022 #MondayInspiration - It’s Never Too Late to Pursue a Dream, a 97 year old Graduate Says. Amazing story of 97 year old Giuseppe Paterno who just graduated with honours in Italy at the University of Palermo. Universidad de Palermo Don’t get lost because you find obstacles because there will always be obstacles, ... You have to be strong. Giuseppe Paterno... His story is proof that dreams can come true and that you can remain young if not in age at least in spirit if you cultivate interests, Rossella Cancila, his thesis adviser and a professor of history at the University of Palermo. #CFO2Grow #MorethanaCFO - Proudly supported by @cityofgleneira - @nytimes

19.01.2022 As reported by @adeleferguson in the Age that in the past few months major listed companies including AMP, QBE and now Rio have lost key executives and directors after becoming engulfed in behaviour that didn’t meet community standards. For too long corporate Australia has been allowed to get away with practices that might be legal but are unethical and immoral @adele_ferguson The importance of #GoodGovernance is now of the utmost importance. Adele goes onto say that it ra...ises a bigger issue about boards in Australia and the flawed governance too many of them oversee. There is too little accountability, too little transparency, still far too much reliance on bonuses linked to financial incentives and too much corporate governance box ticking. The times are changing and boards and management would be foolish to think it’s going to slip by unnoticed. #CFO2Grow #MorethanaCFO #corporategovernance

19.01.2022 #SundayInspiration - I am always looking for a quote from books that I have read. I have just completed Angela Williams memoir, Snakes and Ladders. 13 years after thinking she had completed a jail sentence, she is involved in an accident and the Police realised that she still had ten months to go on the prison sentence she’d thought was in her distant past. With unwavering courage, intelligence and humour, Snakes and Ladders reveals an astonishing true story of falling thr...ough the cracks, and what it takes to climb back out again. as a parent she teaches Showing you that it’s possible to change, thrive and success is the most important job I will ever do. @boxedangel To end she says to fellow prisoners, but this can apply to anyone You are so much more than your crime, history or charges. The walls can only hold your body, your mind is free to fly #MorethanaCFO #CFO2Grow #Inspiration - Proudly supported by @cityofgleneira

18.01.2022 I was very sad over the weekend to hear of the passing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (1948 - 2020). Business leader, Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, said the Jewish world was profoundly saddened. Sacks was a riveting orator and brilliant author who brought the timeless teachings of Jewish scripture to both Jews and non-Jews alike, fusing Jewish tradition with modern thought He was also a pillar of integrity. It said: His books, other writings, l...ectures and media appearances were followed and admired not only by the Jewish community but millions of Christians, and people of all faiths and none His influence will endure for years to come through the many he inspired, influenced and touched with his warmth and wisdom. I thought I would share some quotes from @RabbiSacks on #Leadership A leader should never try to be all things to all people. A leader should be content to be what he or she is. Leaders must have the strength to know what they cannot be if they are to have the courage to be themselves. Jonathan Sacks Win the respect of people you respect, and you can forget the rest. Leadership demands two kinds of courage: the strength to take a risk, and the humility to admit when a risk fails. Jonathan Sacks, Leadership demands two kinds of courage: the strength to take a risk, and the humility to admit when a risk fails. Jonathan Sacks, Parents and leaders must establish a culture in which honest, open, respectful communication takes place, one that involves not just speaking but also listening. Without it, tragedy is waiting in the wings. Jonathan Sacks CFO2Grow #MorethanaCFO #Leadership

17.01.2022 I recently spoke to my kids about perception and the choices that we make. The question is not what you look at, but what you see. Henry David Thoreau Perception = Projection.... Perception can change everything Triathlon Champion @PeteJJacobs @liveyourownfit He went on and said that you hold the power. I loved this poem by the poet In-Q @inqlife on #perception What we are doing now Is the next hundred years What we are doing now Is the next thousand years I dare you to be beautiful But first be aware However you perceive Is the way you appear IN-Q #CFO2Grow #MorethanaCFO #Perception

17.01.2022 Don’t make the same mistakes twice I have been looking to post a quote from all books I read. There is always a lesson to be learnt. I just finished Pamela Watson’s book Gibbous Moon Over Lagos where she shares her 5 year entrepreneurial journey in Lagos, Nigeria. @pamelawatson_africa . In the book she says The greatest learning, I realised with chagrin (annoyance or stress at having failed or been humiliated), came from mistakes, and not without substantial pain and sacr...ifice On the weekend I noticed that two large Australian Companies had admitted to making mistakes. Rio chief executive, Jean-Sebastien Jacques, admitted error to the explosion at a cave that caused damage to an ancient Aboriginal site in Western Australia Something went wrong in relation to the Juukan Gorge. He went on to say We are absolutely committed to understand what happened to learn in order to make sure it doesn’t happen again but the work is underway and I don’t have the answers," Jacques said. Westpac chief executive Peter King has vowed to ramp up efforts to improve the bank's culture after a critical internal review found serious shortcomings with its governance of risk and a lack of urgency to change. "It is clear we have more to do to address these shortcomings, including improving our risk management capability and risk culture which is not where we want it to be," Mr King said. In an article about the COVID-19 crisis is Melbourne, it says This pandemic throws up enormous logistical challenges and tough choices every day. Mistakes will be made, and some such as hotel quarantine will have enormous consequences, while others will soon be forgotten. Accepting fault, finding solutions, being truthful and transparent, all need to be part of the response. It would ensure that in the eyes of the public, accountability takes precedence, no matter what the consequence. While we usually think that life is all about moving forward, often, we need to retreat from the progress that we’ve made: to take a step back, and have the humility to learn from our mistakes and re-evaluate our decisions. It is through this process that we grow and truly move forward. Rabbi Kenneth B

15.01.2022 On Sunday a broker said in his commentary said APPLE Up 10% ... COVD - what????? Further on in his note he said Market cap last night rose to US$1.8 Trillion Up 10% on their results .... (an increase of US $165 Billion +) or approx. AUD $230 Billion, which is the equivalent of our 2 largest stocks put together = CSL + CBA J J !!! In an article in May, The Age journalist Stephen Bartholomeusz said that there is Disconnect: Sharemarkets are ignoring the economic devast...ation the pandemic is wreaking. Today he said Sharemarkets have become almost irrelevant as barometers of economic health and the optimism capitalised into them is misleading. Stephen Bartholomeusz Citi still rate APPLE a BUY PT upgraded to US$450 (from $400).. stronger AUD will help you fund this now.. (PS Facebook smashed it home too up 8%!!) The press has said that there are record numbers of new investors opening share trading accounts. NOTE: This is not financial advice. #CFO2Grow #morethanacfo

15.01.2022 Good Opinion article by Sharyn Davies in @theageaustralia Advice to Melbourne from someone who's done it before on what can be learnt from Stage 4 restrictions in New Zealand. We are still learning. 14.01.2022 Ellen DeGeneres made her TV comeback after months plagued by a toxic-work-environment scandal. During the show Ellen made an apology for what had happened behind the scenes. I am that person that you see on TV, she said. I am also a lot of other things. Sometimes I get sad, I get mad, I get anxious, I get frustrated, I get impatient. And I am working on all of that. I am a work in progress. Ellen DeGeneres @theellenshow It is important that from a crisis management perspe...ctive, leaders offer a sincere apology that takes responsibility and offer concrete steps for moving forward. There are some teachable moments in this whole debacle, especially around leadership accountability. 1. Top leaders have an increased responsibility for perpetuating positive behaviour, and for addressing negative behaviour when it occurs; 2. Leaders need to behave the same way all the time, no matter the context; and 3. Ignorance is not a defence. Lesson learned from Ellen top leaders must make a genuine effort to foster and stay on top of an environment where employees are happy, engaged and thriving. Going forward it will be important that Ellen delivers a follow-up ‘monologue’ stating all of the ways the working conditions have improved. Transparency is key here #MorethanaCFO #CFO2Grow #Leadership

14.01.2022 I have just listened to an excellent PODCAST with Payal Kadakia the founder of studio fitness and wellness platform @ClassPass. Post a recent capital raise from investors in @onepeloton (Peloton) and @Equinox, ClassPass is the latest female-founded startup to achieve a $1 billion unicorn valuation. The Company was founded in 2013 by Payal Kadakia, who now serves as executive chairman. Doing some research on @payal I have come across some really excellent quotes.... Dance has always been the centre of who I am. It has given me the inspiration to help other people find a hobby, passion, and activity that fulfils them. It also taught me some of the many skills I need as an entrepreneur: a hard work ethic that takes practice to master and the confidence to persevere through any challenges. - Payal Kadakia It's really lonely trying to build something by yourself. It's good to have thought partners to bounce ideas off of. - Payal Kadakia @payal I never feel bad. You can't feel bad - you have to just make the best decision you can at the time you're in and be like, 'That's the decision I believe in.’ - Payal Kadakia As an exercise junkie, this quote resonates Working out is so mentally and physically important. @Payal #CFO2Grow #MorethanaCFO #Unicorn #Founders #StartUp #entrepreneur

13.01.2022 Recently I listened to Cafe Gratitude co-owner, Ryland Engelhart on a Podcast and as a lover of Plant Based Food, bought their recipe book Love is Served: Inspired Plant-Based Recipes from Southern California Ryland’s philosophy is #Gratitude Success is how much love can we give in this lifetime? - Ryland Engelhart @lovebeingryland @kisstheground founder of @cafegratitude He continued, As humans, our mind inherently tells us ‘I am not good enough’ or ‘I am lacking this o...r that’ [at Cafe Gratitude] we try and counterbalance that through transforming and reversing negative thoughts we oftentimes say about ourselves and in turn use the restaurant as a way to remind ourselves of these positive reinforcements of who we really are. There’s almost nothing that’s more fulfilling in my life than giving generously with no ulterior motive. Ryland Engelhart Ryland Engelhart's Philosophy Is Gratitude: Thoughts On Soil, Sacred Commerce & Sustainability. Love is not something found in a person, place or thing. It's something that is ever present in our hearts and always available as a gift and it costs nothing to share it. Ryland Engelhart: Sacred Commerce is a business that is guided by the heart. It’s a business that considers that we all are connected and that the only real win is the win-win. 11.01.2022 Amazing to read that Expert360 founder Bridget Loudon has become the youngest independent director of an ASX top 200 company after joining Telstra's board. @telstra Chairman, John Mullen said Bridget understands and is a leader in how organisations transform themselves to capture the opportunities presented by developments in technology The entrepreneur, who founded the employment marketplace for skilled non-permanent professionals in 2013.... Listening to Bridget on her @tedxsydney 2019 talk Are jobs dead?, Bridget suggests that the path forward is more flexible, project-based ways of working, where talented people can stay engaged in work that is right for them and businesses can engage the right talent, at the right time to get critical work done faster There's a lot of information out there about how we'll need to redesign our workforces so I'm trying to help people find the signal in the noise Bridget Loudon It is so good to see that Top 200 companies are looking younger board members who provide a very different set of skills "I am delighted to have Bridget join the board her youth and entrepreneurial start-up experience, in particular, will provide a fresh and unique perspective to ensure we are considering a range of views as we navigate Telstra though the next period." 08.01.2022 A bit of Sunday Motivation. Young up and coming triathlete @triaashlete_ posts his daily training with the words #SeekDiscomfort #BetterthanYesterday . In a recent post by Robin Arzon who I have been following for years. Robyn is VP/Head Instructor @onepeloton, a Former Lawyer, Author of ‘Shut Up & Run’, marathoner and @adidas Ambassador says that if you’re searching for a confidence boost, get uncomfortable. Run the distance you fear, pick up a heavier set of weights, or ...commit to a ride type you don't usually take. These lessons apply to both our personal and professional lives. From a professional perspective we can #seekdiscomfort by doing a new course, make a sales call, start a new line etc. On the @marcmaron #WTFPodcast he interviews @JimCarrey . Jim talks about how he tried do a new standup routine every night with no repetition of ’skits’ - in effect #SeekDiscomfort. He also talks about how he has evolved over time. If I had never ventured beyond being a stand-up comic, then I would be sitting in my house today working on my Leonardo DiCaprio impression. - @JimCarrey Discomfort is the catalyst for the mental shift that resilience & confidence requires. 06.01.2022 In a newspaper article, Kogan founder, Ruslan Kogan was asked what advice does he have for young Australians with a passion for business? You need to be part inventor, part athlete You have to be an inventor because you need to look at the marketplace and invent something that hasn’t existed before, and it needs to help people in a unique way. Once the invention is conceived, an entrepreneur then becomes an athlete because you have to work your butt off in order to turn yo...ur ideas into reality. @ruslankogan Just make sure that when you get decisions wrong, you learn from it and become a better decision maker the next day. #CFO2Grow #MorethanaCFO #CorporateGovernance @kogandotcom #entrepreneur

04.01.2022 If you enjoy being inspired by #StartUpCulture have a listen to @SquarePegCap @ImogenBaxter Founders Stories Podcast. Doing some research after listening to the interview with Ashik Ahmed the founder of workforce management solution Deputy, I have picked out a few great comments for inspiration. What's the best piece of business advice you've ever received? A person's hunger will always triumph experience. When hiring, now, I always evaluate a candidate's attitude and passion... for the mission to determine whether they are a good fit. From there, we can train for skill but the kind of person they are and the soft skills they possess are far more important. Three things that stop people from achieving what they want to do conformity, monkey see monkey do, doing something to please somebody. Trying to make people happy etc. What advice would you pass on to someone starting out in your area? See the company you are building as a community working together to achieve a clear common purpose. In my eyes, this is what success comes down to and how a business is maintained through the years. What do you think are some of the best habits you’ve developed over the years to help you strive for success and balance? One of the best habits I’ve developed is that I’m an early riser so will always be up before sunrise no matter the time of the year. I am a big believer that the early bird catches the worm and that you need to take advantage of the entire day to achieve your goals. #CFOtoGrow #MorethanaCFO #StartUp #Entrepreneurs @deputyashik @deputyapp

04.01.2022 I really liked some comments from @JohnCleese on what he called #CollectiveIgnorance What I'm basically saying is that very few people know what they're talking about, - He says that extends to people in all fields of life, including political leadership. Only John Cleese can make a serious matter funny. 03.01.2022 Interesting to read an article in The Age Judo Bank's Joseph Healy warns on 'zombie firms' . Joseph Healy has warned small and medium businesses are taking on $25 billion in unproductive debt to survive the pandemic, leaving some operators vulnerable to future collapse while others become "zombie" firms. Zombie companies are indebted businesses that, although generating cash, after covering running costs, fixed costs (wages, rates, rent) they only have enough funds to servi...ce the interest on their loans, but not the debt itself. I think the big problem is going to be, for the businesses that get to the other side, by the time they get there they will be so cash-starved. - Neil Slonim, SME advocate of the BankDoctor #MorethanaCFO #CFO2Grow #Cashflow #Budget #Zombie @judo_bank @theageaustralia

03.01.2022 On the back of one of my favourite musicians, Jason Mraz announcing that he is donating all personal profits from his new album 'Look for the Good' to charity. I thought I would share some lyrics from one of his new songs Look for the good, look for the good... Look for the good in everyone - @jason_mraz Jason goes on to say, "My personal engagement with philanthropy has never been motivated by a press opportunity. But today I am announcing my contributions publicly in hopes of inspiring other creators and leaders in business to do the same -- to share the wealth, to share the profits, and to acknowledge that life is only great when it’s great for everyone." 02.01.2022 I love to listen to Champions talk about their experiences in sport and lessons they have learnt from sport.
