04.01.2022 Sunday Morning Service 14/02/2021

03.01.2022 This the best statement I've read on our lockdown position. Thank you Dr Jon Kenneth Newton. What's going on in Melbourne? If you live in Melbourne, you were pr...obably disappointed and maybe frustrated, shocked, or angered by the Premier's very lengthy road map out of COVID19 lockdown as revealed yesterday. How should we respond, especially as Christians? Joining demonstrations against all this is probably ill-advised and counterproductive no matter how much you might feel frustrated and how unjust it feels. More mildly, you might voice your opinions on Facebook or elsewhere. But what does God want us to do? And what might God be doing in and through all this? Certainly God wants us to give thanks in all situations (1 Thess 5:18), and in this case that we are not facing a situation anything like as bad as some other countries. We have food to eat, clothes to wear and houses to live in in most cases. The restrictions on us are fairly mild really. Certainly God wants us to pray for our leaders (1 Tim 2:1-8), a task that Paul especially assigns to men, and which is to be done "without anger or disputing" (v8), unlike some of what we see right now. Praying for, and submitting to, civil gvernment is based on the conviction that "the authorities that exist have been established by God" (Rom 13:1). I don't think that just means that civil government in itself is from God. I think it also means that "the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes" (Dan 4:32). That was the message God was conveying to Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4. In other words, the present government in Victoria has been put there by God's sovereign choice, not just by our votes; God could easily have torn it down if He wanted to. That is why Paul insists, "whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted" (Rom 13:2). What I am saying is that God has a sovereign purpose in putting us under this lockdown. It's not just a matter of whether or not Daniel Andrews has it right. So what might God's purpose be? That's not as simple, but here are some possibilties: 1. God wants to chasten and awaken his church, since "it is time for judgement to begin with God's household" (1 Pet 4:17). Churches are suffering in the lockdown without any relief in sight. I sense God is probing and dealing with me right now; what about you? 2. God wants to warn the rest of the population: "if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?" (1 Pet 4:17) There are small signs that many people are starting to re-evaluate their lives in the light of the pandemic. 3. God wants to bring many lost sinners home to his family (see Luke 15; Eph 1:4-5). This is God's top priority in this age of grace and if it takes a pandemic and a severe lockdown to do it, should we as believers complain? Now I want to go out on a limb: maybe God is giving us a privilege at this time and we should "rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ" (1 Pet 4:13). Maybe God is starting a great new awakening right here and we can be the pioneers of that new movement. So perhaps the best prayer we can make is for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit. "Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus" (Acts 4:29-30). I can't prove that, of course, but certainly Paul links prayers for government leaders with the truth that "God our Saviour.. wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowlegde of the truth" (1 Tim 2:3-4).
