15.01.2022 Living at our new place has certainly been interesting..some might say challenging. After 20 years at the old place it's taken quite a while for this place to feel like home. The huge mock orange ill planted smack bang up against this decrepit fibro shack oozing out it's intense fragrance has however, been one of the compensations to offset the struggles. 12.01.2022 The wild weather from the weekend brought with it VERY welcome rain...3 out of 4 dams full, thank you very much...it also brought us a large clean up job! Sad to lose trees of this size, but at least it was just 1 ricketty old fence flattened and nothing more.

12.01.2022 You can rest assured whatever the question, pastured chicken has been the answer this week! It's been a week devoted to all things chook related at #cglbeef headquarters. Mamma silkie and her wee babies (see earlier posts) are in a #tinyhouse style pastured porta-pen and those big beautiful meat birds are still doing the grown-on-grass quick step across the paddocks. Processing this week has the freezer stocked up again awaiting your clicks!! Like I said....whatever the question the answer is and should always be #PaddockRaisedChooks for the win!

10.01.2022 I am officing today whilst trying to will these sprinkly showers into something substantial... Humid as hell and utterly still. The haunting call from some passing black cockatoos floats inside to where I sit at my desk making me smile. I don't know why or how it started, but an unwritten rule in our family is always, always stop and acknowledge these beauties when they call out. To ignore their serene grace would just seem rude...... So I get up from my chair and walk to the doorway facing west and follow the sound of their call until my eye falls on their little group as they lift and fall, lift and fall to the gentle rhythm of their wing beats. 07.01.2022 This is (almost!) middle aged, 50+ kg me moving our portable pen. It looks like I'm pushing pretty hard to move this sucker...and I am for around 8 minutes...that's all it takes to give our grown on grass chooks a clean area to lounge in for the day and fresh grass to eat. You might think that this kind of work is too hard or demeaning for us (humans in general)...but you'd be wrong.... The few minutes of hard work I put in here, works off the sourdough toast and scrambled eggs I had for breakfast. It helps ensure the health and well being of the animals we grow to supply to families searching for great tasting food. Moving back and forth, back and forth, calmly and slowly along the pen gives me time to observe the birds under our care and ensure everyone is healthy and happy. This simple job helps keep me active and strong and yes...this is how we bring income into our family unit. Figures from America show that as little as 15 cents in each 1 food dollar go to farmers. Decades of the "best" advice, latest machinery, gmo this that and the other and 15c for each $1 spent by consumers is what's left fir farming families. The other 85 cents disappear into insurance, debt, machinery, property rates, ..the list goes on and on. Then there is the hidden cost to the environment which continues to deteriorate. I'd rather put in a little bit of huffy puffy and be a bit less efficient and know that I'm improving our soil and farm with each and every move of our birds. We love that our supporters send us little notes of thanks and encouragement for putting in the work we do to grow the food they value. They love that they can buy direct and pay US for the efforts we put into growing food for them. And we see THEM as a extended members of our team. Without us - they lose out on great food. Without them - we simply don't exist.
