24.01.2022 A 1995 throwback in honour of today’s virtual broadcast of the 2020 House Music Competition. What instruments did you play during your time at CGS?

24.01.2022 We’re looking forward to being able to watch sports again like in this picture from 1961 of the Main Oval at CGS.

23.01.2022 Each year, CGS holds an ANZAC Day Service on campus. This year, our community will need to come together in spirit, instead of in-person, through #ANZACAtHome. You can also #LightUpYourDawn on ANZAC Day by standing in your driveway, on your balcony or in your living room, and taking a moment of silence at dawn to remember our veterans and those that serve. In whatever commemorative action you take, we would be grateful if you could share it with the School by either emailing it to [email protected] or mentioning @CanberraGrammar on Twitter so that we may share the ANZAC spirit with our community. We invite our Alumni to tag us on Facebook at @AlumniCGS.

23.01.2022 Our second CGS Insight series speaker, Tania Constable PSM, will be at The Snow Centre on Tuesday 3 March discussing the future of the Australian Resources Sector. Open to all Alumni and members of the community. This is a free event.

21.01.2022 This time in 1952 the Main Oval was covered in a thick layer of snow. Will it happen again in 2020? Only time will tell!

20.01.2022 In support of breast cancer awareness, and because we want a world where there are zero deaths by breast cancer, CGS Rugby and the CGS Rugby Association are hos...ting a Pink (Home) Round on Saturday 29 August. While under normal circumstances, we'd invite you to attend the Home Round, instead, we're asking you to tune into the live stream and watch the Pink Home Round from the comfort of your own home - or wherever you might be. The players on the day will be wearing pink socks to raise awareness. We will distribute information and the link closer to the game day to our community via CGS Connect. We also ask that you consider becoming a #CGSCompassionate Zero Hero by donating to Canberra Grammar School's National Breast Cancer Foundation fundraising page at https://fundraise.nbcf.org.au/fundraiser/cgsrugbypinkround - unfortunately, we are unable to accept cash donations this year.

19.01.2022 Do you know Mojo? This picture of Mojo was found during our recent renovation of Jones House (Boarding). We're sure Mojo was someone's beloved pet, and we'd like to return the framed photo to the owner. Can you help us find the owner? On the back of the photo, it notes 'Mojo, died August 23, 1989'.

19.01.2022 Where are they now? Chris Chynoweth (Class of 2006) After graduating Year 12 at CGS in 2006, Chris went on to ANU to pursue his interest in Law, completing a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Commerce, and then worked a few years at a private law firm in Sydney and has not looked back! Chris attended Harvard University in 2018 to complete a Masters of Law, and credits much of his interest in law and a love of study from his classes at CGS, particularly English, Economics, History and Business Studies. ‘It was a fantastic academic and co-curricular school and I don’t believe I could have got into Harvard without it. It has long been a dream of mine to go overseas to do a Masters and CGS provided the necessary foundations to enable me to achieve it.’

19.01.2022 The missing bell 1953 Extract from ‘Those were the days’ by Rev John C Tyrell, page 21 ‘The use of the school bell also declined over the years. Originally it was used to indicate everything which was going on, from the beginning of School, to class changes, to Chapel services and, to emergencies when it was rung for several minutes. But the presence of the bell in its bell-tower was a great temptation to pranksters both within and from outside the School. It was constantl...y disappearing and, eventually, we became tired of collecting it from the Girls’ School and it was removed permanently.’ c1953 *Photos from 1930s, 1995 and 2020

16.01.2022 We are calling for Alumni to be interviewers for the P&F Year 11 Mock Interviews, which will be conducted via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout Term 2. We have enjoyed the participation of CGS Alumni who have entered the workforce. Our students gain valuable insight into the world of work from their interactions with our community who have vast experience in running selection interviews for a range of organisations. Students are able to practice their interview techn...ique and adopt better approaches to the interview as a result. With growing student numbers, we have growing diversity in our student body. Their career dreams and aspirations are also widely diverse. It is a privilege to watch them grow in confidence through the senior years and gives us hope in the future of Australia when we see them take up wonderful challenges in university and employment. Your commitment would be to administer 15-minute individual (one-to-one) mock interviews of our Year 11 students via scheduled Zoom appointments. Time is also allocated for written feedback and reflection and this is then uploaded passed on to the tutor and student. We will endeavour to run the interviews in Senior School House groups weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays (some flexibility will also occur), over a number of weeks in Term 2. Once we have some interviewers identified we will then send google document to fill in your available time slots for interviews. 15.01.2022 COL Brandon Wood (class of 1987) Brandon graduated from CGS in 1987 and went straight to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) and then into the Army, and he never left! He has enjoyed over three decades in this line of employment which has taken him to some of the most remote places in Australia, and some equally magnificent, yet contested countries of the world. After a brief period where he thought he had settled back in Canberra, he was fortunate to be offered the position of Defence Attache in the Australian Embassy in Baghdad, which he accepted in 2017. After a brief period in Canberra, he is now the Defence Attache in the Australian Embassy in Israel....read more in the next edition of the CGS Outlook magazine. Stay tuned.

14.01.2022 Christopher Burritt (Class of 2000) After leaving School in 2000, Chris took a tutoring job and gap year in the UK before returning home to Australia to undertake a Bachelor of Arts Multimedia (Web design and Authoring) at Charles Sturt University. After a number of years working for the Australian Customs Service and the Department of Defence, it led him to his current position as the Acting Director in the Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Centre of Expertise in the Department of Defence. 14.01.2022 Where are they now? Mr Chris Barnes class of 1986 Australian Consul-General of Surabaya... As a boarder in Jones House, Chris mixed with many DFAT families, but he never expected he would join DFAT himself. His career has culminated with his appointment in August 2017, as Australia’s first Consul-General in Surabaya. Of his posting, Chris says ‘It is a great honour to be the first Australian Consul-General in Surabaya. It is a great privilege to be asked by the Foreign Minister to open a diplomatic Post, especially in Indonesia.’ Although Chris’s posting in Indonesia began in 2017, his knowledge of the country began long ago. Prior to joining DFAT, Chris was the WA Commissioner to Indonesia and before that, he held senior strategy and international business development roles with the Commonwealth Bank and was National President of the Australia Indonesia Business Council. He even won the Presidential Friend of Indonesia in 2009. When asked to give some advice to current CGS students who may want to follow in his footsteps, Chris says ‘Be adventurous and step out of your comfort zone. Rather than worrying about a career path, take on roles that you find interesting.’ In the future, Chris would still like to be actively pursuing a career in the public service and developing Australia’s relations overseas.

13.01.2022 It might have been a while since we’ve spent some quality time at the Manuka shopping precinct and we may have forgotten what it looks like, but does anyone remember it not being there at all!? This photo from 1933 features the original Canberra Grammar School and surrounding landscape.

13.01.2022 Who do you recognise in this photo? Tag them below!

09.01.2022 Julian Bailey (class of 1974) has a Bachelor of Music (Honours in Piano Performance) and has now released two CDs. During and post University, he worked in the Victoria State Opera for 11 years as a chorus singer and elsewhere as a piano accompanist and vocal teacher. He has developed a modern, economical, and minimalist method of teaching singing that he calls ‘Singing Logic’. In 2019, Julian travelled to Sofia in Bulgaria and recorded Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto i...n C minor with a local orchestra. Julian is currently working on the first book of 24 Preludes and Fugues of JS Bach, with a view to perform live in the future. He remains fascinated by Russian music, and particularly that of Sergei Rachmaninoff. One of the two recent recordings (also released on YouTube, Spotify, and iTunes) is of Rachmaninoff’s 10 Preludes Opus 23, as well as six of his songs for Tenor (or Soprano). If you are interested in his music, you can purchase the CDs from Julian directly. Please contact [email protected] to arrange this. We’d love to hear about anything exciting that you - or an alum that you know - have been up to since leaving School, and that we could share with our community.

06.01.2022 Timothy Marshall (Class of 1978) Timothy Marshall is current Chief Academic Officer/Provost at the New School, a world-renowned design school in New York that offers premier undergraduate and graduate programmes and colleges to seek out ways to create a more just, beautiful and better-designed world. Recently, he was featured in The Australian, in which he said, 'like many people in business, my job is trying to change a legacy institution that is faced with all the evidence saying "change and change fast" in the face of deeply entrenched incentives, structures, norms and fears. At the New School, we live and die by our ability to meet the needs and ambitions of our clients- in our case, students. We have to use the same design processes we are teaching; we have to walk the talk'

05.01.2022 Yesterday (Tue 18 Feb), our School Vice-Captains India Kazakoff and Harry Killcullen laid a wreath in honour of CGS Alumnus, Philip Richter, at the 50th Anniversary of Operation Hammersley Commemoration at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra.

04.01.2022 Does anyone recognise these larrikins from (possibly) the 1970s? Keep an eye out for the next CGS Outlook magazine where we have a ‘then and now’ pictorial with photos from throughout the years and around the campus. Do you have any photos you would like to see featured and recreated? Send them to [email protected]

04.01.2022 Dear CGS Alumni, With Term 3 now behind us and the Class of 2020 having ‘marched out’ through the Eastern Archway of the Quad, I thought it would be appropriate to begin updates on the progress of the construction of the CGS Auditorium, centre for music and library. The demolition of the Breezeway building occurred during the semester break and the progress today represents 10 weeks of excavation. While a massive hole to a 4-meter depth has been dug, the next 8 meters is int...o rock! It’s interesting to note that 90% of the Breezeway building was able to be recycled. The Strawberry trees, a Crepe myrtle, and all of the roses from the front of School have now been relocated to a garden bed in front of The Residence (Old Headmaster’s House). A new Memorial Wall has been built on the western side of the Chapel driveway and the plaques from the previous memorial garden yet to be affixed to the wall, along with the repositioned stones. A dedication ceremony will occur next term. Keep well and take care. Thank you, Sandy Goddard Director of Community Development

02.01.2022 The study of agriculture is still an important part of an education at CGS. Students are involved in maintaining the School Ag Plot and participate in local and regional Ag shows. In 1951, though, an Agriculture class looked a little different

02.01.2022 Bill Birtles (class of 2002) Since graduating from CGS in 2002, Bill went to the University of New South Wales and later started a career in journalism, initially in radio. He’d worked for Triple J as a journalist but decided to start learning Mandarin and ended up heading off to Beijing when he was 24. He studied the language and worked in a Chinese television newsroom during a time when China was still growing fast with a dizzying sense of optimism. Bill headed back to ABC in Sydney and Melbourne before landing a posting in China. Bill is currently posted in Beijing as the ABC’s China correspondent and has been in the Chinese capital since 2015.
