22.01.2022 Last week in creche we celebrated NAIDOC Week (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee). @naidocweek celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is a great opportunity to learn more about their community and recognise an important part of the country we live in. Throughout the year in our daily play and teachings, Aboriginal culture is embedded in our practice, however this week we put a greater empha...sis on it, offering the children different experiences and activities to support awareness of their culture. It provides a great opportunity for the children to develop their understanding and empathy skills by responding to diversity with respect. Some of the activities included: - We discussed and emphasised the importance of respecting everyone no matter their background, skin colour or facial appearance. - We talked about the Aboriginal flag, its colours and what they represent. We then used these colours in our artwork, as well as earthy colours - painting using cotton tips - painting with handprints (the children loved the cool, squishy feel of the paint on their hands!) - creating Aboriginal flags made of squares pieces of paper - painting boomerangs - Puzzles of indigenous art and people. - Matching games with Australian native animals as well as Aboriginal Symbols - We read books including Koala Sam, How The Birds Got Their Colours & Edwina the Emu - Tracing Aboriginal symbols with stones - We listened to lots of Aboriginal music and danced to it. As well, the children had many chances to play with Aboriginal instruments. - Artwork using aluminium foil. The children created beautiful snakes, an important part of Aboriginal art. The texture and reflection of the foil brought lots of interest. -The children were introduced to many different Australian native animals, they showed great interest in the different textures of the animals’ natural habitat. - Outside we had the opportunity to touch the land, crush the leaves and smell the earth, as appreciation to the traditional owner of our land. -In the kitchen corner we added gum nuts and pinecones to use in their imaginative play.

On the Shabbat before Purim, the holiday on which we celebrate the foiling of Haman the Amalekite's plot to destroy the Jewish people, the weekly Torah reading is supplemented with the Zachor ("Remember!") reading in which we are commanded to remember the evil of Amalek. When the Jewish People left Egypt, no nation dared pick a fight with the...m. Who would start up with a people whose G d just smacked around the mighty Egypt with ten awesome plagues, and drowned the surviving few in the sea? Only Amalek, driven by profound hatred which defied logic, came to wage battle. According to many Halachic authorities, there is a Biblical requirement for all to hear the special Zachor reading.
