December’s bushfires, which burnt a significant amount of the catchment around Lake Burragorang, followed by February’s rainfall have given our Water Quality team the perfect storm of events. 11.01.2022 After a water storage has mixed in winter, the water within the storage becomes homogenous, meaning it is the same from top to bottom. This makes selecting the best quality raw water available more challenging than when the lake is stratified (in separate layers). To pick the best quality raw water available, WaterNSW water quality scientists collect live data from across the streams and lakes feeding our customer’s water filtration plants. 04.01.2022 As water flows through the drinking water catchment, it collects contaminants from natural and human sources. As flows increase, for instance after heavy rain, debris levels also rise as flows re-suspend settled sediment and erode riverbanks, and rain washes further debris into the waterway. We use the term turbidity to describe how discoloured the water becomes due to the amount of particles suspended within the water. Turbidity can make waterways appear to have poor water ...quality as the waterway can look as though it is polluted, however, the level of pollution is dependent on the type of materials that are suspended within the turbid water. Unless a man-made event has occurred, turbidity is usually due to the presence of organic matter and soil particles. Turbidity reduces over time as particles settle at the bottom of the storages. Water with high turbidity is significantly harder to filter to become drinking water, making it an unpopular choice in terms of water supply. Rather, in storages such as Warragamba, we monitor the entire water column in almost real time through telemetered turbidity monitoring in the lake and the supply point and, where possible, move our outlet screens to sections within the water column that have the lowest turbidity. 04.01.2022 Bush fires do more than destroy native flora and fauna. They destroy the natural ground cover, exposing the soil and making it more vulnerable to soil erosion. After last summer’s bush fires, WaterNSW worked with experts in erosion modelling, including those experienced in modelling post-fire erosion. In fact some of these experts had developed the original models of WaterNSW catchments! The research looked at how the fires impacted soil erosion and the findings were used to... estimate impacts to water quality, selection of monitoring sites and to identify priority areas for the implementation of potential erosion mitigation strategies. In addition, hill-side sediment erosion traps were installed to capture data that will be used to improve erosion modelling predictions.
