25.01.2022 SPEEDWAY FLASHBACK (2014) The Speedway Motorcycle Club of WA has hosted some great speedway riders at it’s tight 142m Pinjar Park Motorcycle Speedway bowl. 2014... was no exception, it had become the rule. On this occasion I refer to the ‘Rob Woffinden Classic’ where eight riders from six different countries contested the popular event which by now had gained 'International recognition'. Visiting riders included Paco Castgna (Italy) Josh Bates, Kyle Horwath, Kyle Newman (UK) Broc Nicol (USA) Matej Kuss (Chez Republic) Pontus Aspgren (Sweden) and Rasmus Jensen (Denmark) lined up for this fabulous event. Perth’s Brad Muller, a former speedway rider, a passionate supporter of Speedway Motorcycle Racing in WA and a long serving SMCWA Club Member was the driving force behind this event, and he had established some great relationships with riders around the world and the word had spread about Perth, Pinjar Park, and the Rob Woffinden Classic event. Riders were keen to visit Western Australia and sample some glorious summer weather during their European winter, take in some additional practice on different racetracks and enjoy some good old fashion Perth hospitality. Danish star, Rasmus Jensen won the 2014 event in a hard-fought win against this quality field and subsequently had his name etched on the RWC trophy alongside hotshots like Freddie Lindgren (Sweden), Ricky Wells (USA) Tai Woffinden (UK) and Gino Manzares (USA) International and top east coast riders loved the challenge of the tight 142m bowl, and they gave it everything they had to take home the prized Title Event. Western Australian riders were right in the mix with their local track knowledge and they all gained valuable knowledge rubbing shoulders with these top riders on and off the racetrack. Back then some of the local riders included, Dan Winchester, Doug Scoble, Blake Russell, Kale and Ethan Ballantyne, Cam Heeps, Trevor Williams and a host of other A grade riders. On two occasions as part of the RWC meeting the club introduced a timed, One Lap Dash for Cash which was keenly contested. Paco Castgna won the 2014 One Lap Dash event with a single lap time of 10.14 from local boy Dan Winchester who was just a whisker off the pace. In 2013, the year prior, USA star, Gino Manzares buzzed around the track to win the One Lap Dash in 10.10 seconds. Gino also went on the win the RWC Title that year from Rohan Tungate, Jason Doyle and Matej Kuss. Those were heady days and despite only having a 142metre track at our disposal, the club put WA and Perth on the map so far as motorcycle speedway racing was concerned. To this day, Neil Machin, former UK Sheffield boss believes the small 142m Pinjar Park track is one of the best circuits in the world for fans to watch top speedway. He said, its tight and you can take in all the action from vantage points all around the track. During its relatively short 12 odd years of history, I have certainly conjured up a lot of wonderful memories and developed some marvellous relationships from my time at Pinjar Park Motorcycle Speedway. Thanks for the ride, Graeme Sinden.

19.01.2022 "LEIGH ADAMS" Take a look at these fantastic pictures of the fabulous Leigh Adams when he raced at Perths 142 metre Pinjar Park Motorcycle Speedway circuit on h...is return from Europe. The tiny 142m Pinjar Park bowl attracted some great crowds back then and hosted several world Champions and a large contingent of International and top east coast rider's. Many people including Former Sheffield Boss, Neil Machin, believe it was one of the best tracks in the world to watch speedway solo racing. The 142m Pinjar Park circuit was the brainchild of Rob Woffinden who's name it now bears. Tai Woffinden cut his teeth at this track prior to returning to the UK and going on to win three World Championships. Back to Leigh, in my opinion, Leigh Adams was one of the best riders of his era and yet never managed to win a world title. At one time he had 10 bikes at his disposal and competed in approximately 144 plus meetings per year in the UK and Europe. Not only was he a brilliant rider he was a fan favourite wherever he rode. These fabulous pictures of Leigh Adams were taken by Jason Sutton, who is still clicking away and is as good today as he was back then. 19.01.2022 Senior Round 1 Article is Live! An action-packed day at the hosting club of Lightweight Motorcycle Club in Byford. Sunday the 23rd of August saw the first ro...und of the WAMX Make Smoking History State Senior Motocross Championship Series. After months of waiting and bike prep, it was time to rip up the dirt. Plenty of riders filled the grid and were anticipating the gate drop for their first of many motos of the day. The canteen was running hot and the spectators lined up, waiting to view their favourite riders battle it out for a podium win. 19.01.2022 HERE IT IS FOLKS - "NIGHTS TO REMEMBER" - SIDECARS FANTASTIC MEMORIES FROM A BYGONE ERA, FROM SPEEDWAY AUTHOR, HISTORIAN AND COMMENTATOR, GRANT WOODHAMS. ... NIGHTS TO REMEMBER SIDECARS Claremont Speedway Friday 19th January 1968 As a special treat and a prelude to this series on Sidecars in the 70's I thought I'd take us back to a great night of action towards the end of the 1960's. Sidecars had a strong and steady following and there were some established fan favourites at Claremont during the 1960's. As far as most meetings went Speedcars were at the top of the pile and then came solos and sidecars. But promoter, former Australian solo star Aub Lawson, could see that sidecars were starting to grow in popularity... I should mention that this night was a massive one for speedcars. Later in the programme we would see the running of the WA round of the National Speedcar Championship, promoted by Craven A cigarettes. That championship was worth a cool $8,000. Speedway over fifty years was a far more lucrative sport than it is today! This meeting also featured Stock Bikes, Solos, TQ's (the forerunner to Formula 500's), Super Modifieds and Production Cars. Variety was the spice of life. As far as the sidecars were concerned, in the previous week the improving combination of Graeme Harris and Johnny Watkins had swept all before them winning all three sidecar races. Harris and Watkins were on board an outfit prepared by Bill Brown. The blend of Harris's riding skills, Watkins ability as a passenger and the undeniable engine tuning capacity of Brown made them a very powerful team. Tonight they would be tested in another three events, one which would be a race to qualify for the WA Title which was scheduled to be held in a few weeks time. For most of the 1960's the WA sidecar fields were generally only big enough for one race of six or seven teams. Tonight there were eight teams. Harris and Watkins as previously mentioned had form coming into this meeting. Their ambition was to win the State Title qualifier and guarantee their place in WA Sidecar racing's most prestigious event. They wouldn't have it all their own way because two of the greats of the WA scene had also nominated to race. Tom McQuade and his passenger Eddy Jager plus Stan Dyson with swinger Danny Smith were in the programme. Add in the well accomplished Geoff Richards/Allan Robson duo and those who knew their sidecars sensed a great night of racing ahead. Their first race was Event Four of a twenty two event programme. It was a handicap race from a clutch start. Lew and Phil McDonald (23) were at the start gate in front of the Claremont grandstand. They were the only team on scratch. Amazingly we went way back 140 yards (yes we are talking pre-metric days) before we came to the next starters, who were in fact Harris/Watkins (14). Next to them were Richards/Robson (8) and then halfway between turns three and four were the back markers McQuade/Jager (7) and Dyson/Smith (1) both on one hundred and fifty yards. The programme also noted that Steve and Don Smith (12) were getting a start from the rear of the field. The Smith's were regarded as stars of the future and I wondered why they weren't on scratch alongside the McDonalds, a similar young team with a great deal of potential. From their scratch mark the McDonalds led away, but with a clear track ahead of him it didn't take Graeme Harris long to wheel them in. Stan Dyson was on the move too and in the battle for the lead it was the experienced Dyson who found the the best lines around Claremont to rack up his first win of the night. Harris followed him closely across the line and the Smith/Smith combination made everyone scratch their heads by recording third place. The time was 84.70 seconds. Certainly not a record but given the substantial handicap that Dyson/Smith carried it was fairly respectable. There was a break for the Sidecar boys then as we watched the Stock Bike Feature, won by Harry Dykgraaf, a Solo Scratch race won by Chum Taylor and then the Visitors' Speedcar Match Race, won by reigning Australian Champion Johnny Stewart from NSW. Event Eight was the all important WA Sidecar Championship Qualifying Scratch Race. Three laps from a clutch start. Only the winner would automatically go through to the Final scheduled for Friday February 9th. There were two rows of starters. Three from the front row off scratch. Two from the second row off twenty yards. The front row consisted of the McDonalds, Keith Brameld/Jim Beadle and Harris/Watkins, in that order from the pole to the fence. Row two was Richard/Robson, McQuade/Jager and Dyson/Smith. The boys from row two were up against it. Given Harris and Watkins form and a twenty yard advantage they were the ones to beat. And that is how the race panned out with Harris getting the Brown tuned bike off to a fabulous start. The track was getting a little rougher too and the sidecars took some handling to get around. With his pick of lines through the turns Graeme Harris was able to hold Stan Dyson at bay. Bramfeld ran third. Harris/Watkins were through to Championship. Their time was 81.2 seconds. With their ambition to make the WA Title achieved, Graeme Harris and Johnny Watkins turned their attention to the next challenge on their plate. It was Event Twelve, the Bright Spot Sidecar Feature Handicap. At the end of the season the top point scorer would receive a trophy and cheque. Bright Spot was a massive part of Claremont and WA sport in general in the 1960's. Leading the way on points at this point in the season was Geoff Richards, Harris sat behind him and then came Brameld, Dyson and Arthur Watt. With over half the season completed it looked like the winner would come from one of them. Once again the McDonald team was on scratch as were Brameld/Beadle. Harris back on 140 yards was effectively out of position three. Next to him, his main rival for the Bright Spot Trophy, Geoff Richards and passenger Allan Robson were parked, engine revving, up next to the fence. Then a further ten yards back came McQuade/Jager, Dyson/Smith and Smith/Smith. Taking the evening's form into account it looked to be either Harris or Dyson who would pick up win number two for the night. Four fabulous back markers charging like fury to catch McDonald and Bramfeld up front. If the first two races were anything to go by, then who ever got by the boys on scratch first would go on to win. By this stage of the night it was important to stay down low. And this time after a couple of average performances in his early races it was the popular Richards/Robson team that go the job done. Harris not to be denied ran a great second, both of them had too much speed for Stan Dyson who finished in third. It had been a quiet night for Tom McQuade who was unplaced. Three sidecar races doesn't sound like much, but over fifty years ago the technology, the engines and the frames were all massively different. Three races truly taxed man and machine. Most of the sidecars were Vincents, HRD's and the like and Claremont was yet to hold an Australian Sidecar Championship. That wouldn't happen for another nine years... but let me tell you the sidecars made it another great night to remember at Claremont Speedway. Grant Woodhams. .................. Reading through Grants report. it struck me that not only did you have to qualify to get into the State Title event, but you had to do it in a HANDICAP RACE??????? 18.01.2022 MINISTER FOR SPORT'S TIME IN OFFICE COMING TO AN END. The Minister for Seniors and Ageing, Volunteering, Sport and Recreation, The Hon Mick Murray MLA’s time in... office is sadly coming to an end as he will not contest the forthcoming State election in March 2021. Mick Murray has been a very popular and effective Minister and has provided a refreshing hands-on approach when dealing with issues in his portfolio. Con Migro and I were pleased to catch up briefly with the Minister to thank him for his support and interest in Speedway, particularly the role he played in brokering the new lease of the Perth Motorplex complex to its new lessees. While the negotiations were long and protracted, Mick Murray said it was necessary to ensure the Government had sufficient time to carry out an effective due Diligence process and to ensure the venue was maintained as a Speedway/Drag racing facility for at least the next twenty years. During our chat, Mick reflected on his time as a speedway solo rider in his early days and while in his own words, he did not set the speedway world on fire with his ability, he thoroughly enjoyed that period of his life. He recounted on the commitment shown by riders back then and spoke of the hundreds of miles speedway riders travelled in those days just to race and gain more experience. Con Migro was keen to point out to the Minister that while the Perth Motorplex Complex was now 20 years old, the annual maintenance and upgrades made to the complex by Venues West over the years has kept the venue in excellent condition and continues to remain equal or better than most venues of its type around the world. During his time as a speedway promoter and broadcaster Con has visited most famous speedway circuits in the USA and Europe and maintains the Perth Motorplex has it all. Mick Murray is a keen follower of Talking About Speedway and said it allows him to keep up to date and maintain his interest in the sport. While our catch up with the Minister was very much informal, it did provide an opportunity to generally discuss issues to do with the management, administration, and promotion of Speedway in general terms. I am sure Mick Murray will not be totally lost to motorsport, post retirement. I do know that he intends to spend some of his leisure time rebuilding a couple of old motorcycles he has acquired over time. He is also looking forward to spending more time with his family and grandchildren and I believe his fishing rod will be used with more vigour and intent than it has during his time in office as one of the states most effective and down to earth Minister’s for Sport. 17.01.2022 Talking About Speedway's Graeme Sinden, chats with former Sheffield Tigers license holder and promoter, Neil Machin, about his remarkable career in Speedway. Ne...il took over the license and promotion of the Tigers in 1992 and drove them to become league Champions in 1999, a feat the club had not previously achieved in 70 years. Neil promoted 649 events during his 23 year career with the Tigers, meeting the Queen along the way and travelled the world over 30 times. This is the first of three interviews with Neil Machin. Watch out for the second interview coming out soon. Graeme Sinden.
14.01.2022 SGP HOTING UP AT THE HALF WAY POINT. The new point scoring system appears to be doing its job and favouring those that either win or are at the pointy end at th...e end of the night at each Grand Prix. The exciting Freddie Lindgren secured his first GP win of the season earning him a big 20 points to elevate him to the top of the leaders board of the Championship race with four GPs still to come. He has now featured in 4 straight finals in the series so far. Freddie has been riding very well, however he admitted the win in the weekends second of the two GPs got the monkey off his back. Australias former world champ Jason Doyle is back to his best holding 7th position in the championship after 4 rounds. His ride in the final of the third round was as good as it gets. He rode smart and aggressively to push Bartosz Zmarzlik right to the line to finish an exciting second, picking up 18 points along the way. The pair had a little coming together and fell in a delightful moment when they were congratulating each other after the exciting final. To see these two guys giving it everything, pushing each other to the limit was absolutely brilliant. Jason appears to be enjoying his racing at the highest level and is full of confidence at present. Australias other great talent, Max Fricke picked up 8 points in Saturdays GP and now sits in 12th place on 24 points. Woffy hasnt set the GP alight as yet but he sits comfortably in 4th position in the Championship race and looks a good bet to come home strongly to pick up what could be his 4th World Championship and the first in the new points system. Leon Madsen also looks good sitting in 5th place on 50 points after finishing a close second to Lindgren picking up 18 big points. Batosz Zmarzlik in second overall cant be discounted for outright honours as he currently sits in second place, 5 points adrift of Lindgren. Another exciting double header is coming our way next weekend as the SGP circus heads to the Marketa Stadium in the Czech Capitol, Prague.

10.01.2022 Another in the series: "NIGHTS TO REMEMBER" ... From the pen of Mr Grant Woodhams. This time from way back in 1976, the venue, Claremont Speedway with the article covering the arrival to our shores of Polish Speedway Champion, Boleslaw (Boley) Proch. NIGHTS TO REMEMBER... Claremont Speedway Friday December 3rd 1976. It was the era of rare treats. While Claremont Speedways usual evening of races in 1976 was massively good, every couple of weeks something would happen or someone would come along that these days seems hard to believe, because back then we were spoilt, spoilt rotten in the world of speedway. One such rare treat was Boleslaw (Boley) Proch. I imagine only the most knowledgeable of speedway followers would have known who Proch was at the time. I certainly didnt but there he was as large as life on the front cover of the Claremont programme - Tonight Boley Proch, Polish Speedway Champion. Twenty One year old Proch was billed as one of the most promising riders in the world and he was making his first Claremont appearance. He was scheduled to spend the rest of the season at Claremont where he would come up against the likes of Mick McKeon, Glyn Taylor, Les Leisk and Peter Thompson. The Claremont Solo ranks ran deep and Proch would certainly be up against it in both scratch and handicap events. He was on board a brand new Westlake which was considered the best solo machinery at the time. Hed also just completed a season in the British League. His first race was Event One on the main program, but there had already been seven qualifying races on the night which included Solos, Sidecars, Formula 500s, Speedcars and Sprintcars. Im sure Proch had never seen anything like it! Some of those attempting to qualify for the main bike programme included Les Sawyer, Rob Townson, Phil Georgeff, Ric Purvis and Keith Wright. And if they qualified they became reserves in case another rider dropped out. Great nights. After he was introduced to the crowd, big and enthusiastic as always, Proch lined up in the first heat of the Solo Handicap. He was handicapped on forty metres. Behind him was Les Leisk (70), Peter Thompson (60) and John Howell (50). In front of the young Pole was David Coles (20), Robert Madden (10) and Mick Murray (Scratch). If my calculations are correct Murray is the current Western Australian Minister for Sport and Recreation! The first four would qualify for the Final. Well Proch couldnt have had a better start to his time at Claremont as he rounded up the front markers and went on to win the three lap journey in seventy three seconds. Leisk was second, Madden third and Murray fourth. The second heat of the Solo Handicap saw another strong lineup with Taylor (70), McKeon (60), Doug Underwood (50), Col Thompson (40), Michael Moores (30), Mark Williams (20), Mick Conroy (10) and Keith Madden (Scratch). Michael Moores had the better of this affair and proved too good for McKeon, Underwood and Conroy. Sidecars were up next with their first Handicap event which saw back markers Dennis Nash/Russell Hearn up against a mouth watering field that included John McDermott/Brian Ralston, Joe Drummond/Howard Murphy, Graeme Harris/Mick Sherwood, Bob Wood/Andy Leinasars, Tom McQuade/Dave Bowman, Ivan Turich/Chris Donohue and Bryan Dyson/Gary Joyce. It was a pretty willing episode with both McDermott and Turich coming to grief on different occasions. The race was eventually declared with Dyson getting the win over McQuade and Harris. After a Formula 500 race that was won by Terry Mears from John Andersson and Jim Tryhorn it was straight to the Solo Handicap Final. Our man from Poland Boley Proch had only Les Leisk, Mick McKeon and Doug Underwood behind him. For someone who wasnt used to handicap racing it was a tough assignment. Proch would finish fourth to McKeon, Conroy and Robert Madden. He had some time now back in the pits to contemplate his set up and the size of the Claremont track. He was due out after a Sprintcar, Speedcar and Sedan race to take part in the first heat of the Solo Scratch race. Whether Proch watched the four wheeled divisions is not recorded. But as any Claremont regular will tell you, the track was rarely smooth for the bikes or sidecars once the cars had a good look at the track. Prochs third race of the night saw him line up out of position one against Michael Moores (2), Mick McKeon (3), Neil Webb (4), John Howell (5) and Les Leisk (6). "Leisky" was out where he liked to be at the top of the track but it was pretty rough upstairs and he could make no headway against the slick gating of McKeon and the growing level of confidence that Proch was exhibiting. McKeon first, Proch second, Leisk third. McKeons time 66.90 seconds. They were through to the Scratch Final. The second Scratch race would pit Glyn Taylor, who was enjoying one of his finest Claremont seasons, against Mark Williams (1), Col Thompson (2), Peter Thompson (3), David Coles (4) and Doug Underwood (5). Taylor while starting out of position six was able to master this field although his time wasnt as fast as the previous heat. Taylor accounted for Peter Thompson and David Coles, the three of them advancing to the last Solo race of the night, the four lap Solo Feature Final. In the meantime there were two more Speedcar races before the first Sidecar Scratch race of the night. This race saw Nash/Hearn beat Harris/Sherwood and McQuade/Bowman home in a three lap time of 74.10 seconds. It was only the third race of the night for the Sidecar competitors involved, but it all seemed so normal back then. So to the Solo Feature with Mick McKeon #76 from 1, Boley Proch #18 from 2, Les Leisk #1 from 3, Glyn Taylor #4 from 4, Peter Thompson #7 from 5 and David Coles #16 from 6. Im sure a lot of people today still remember McKeon riding with 76 on his leathers, he made the number his own and he made this race his own on the night and blistered away to a great win. Curiously the three riders starting in the first three positions finished in those places. Proch would run second and Leisk third. McKeon recorded 90 seconds even for the four lap journey. For his efforts he won a selection of Kaiser Stuhl wines. Prochs first night at Claremont was an impressive one. Hed shown he was capable of mixing it with the best in WA. In the weeks to come he would change his racing number from 18 to 2 and hed live up to Claremont Speedway Promoter Con Migros promise of being a star of the future. He was not only a star but a wonderful ambassador for the sport and his country Poland. Prochs last meeting at Claremont was in early March 1977 when he contested the WA Solo Title. Along with Mick McKeon and defending Champion Les Leisk. Proch was regarded as one of the likely winners, however his quest for Title glory ended early in the night when he fell while challenging McKeon in the 5th heat of the WA Championship. Several riders were involved and Proch was out for the remainder of,the program with a badly damaged ankle. McKeon would go on to win the Title with Leisk in second and Collies Lloyd Hopper Cross in third. Over that summer Boley Proch had proven to be the equal of Claremonts best at the time and would go on to have a substantial professional speedway career both in the United Kingdom and Poland where he eventually retired from racing in 1987. Proch raced for both Reading and Leicester in the UK while back home he raced with Gorzow and Bydgoszcz. Some of his honours would consist of representing Poland in the World Cup (1976 and 1984) and the World Best Pairs Title (1978). He was the winner of the Polish Silver Helmet in 1976. In his early career Boley Proch had won the Polish Junior Championship (1974). Sadly Proch passed away in Germany in 2012 where he had found work as a physiotherapist. In the era before the internet when we relied on the occasional newspaper report to keep up to date with visiting speedway stars, the name Boley Proch would not have been one that many Claremont fans were familiar with. But after his first up win Proch became another shining light on yet another NIGHT TO REMEMBER.

06.01.2022 WELL HERE IT IS - ANOTHER FASCINATING "NIGHTS TO REMEMBER" FROM THE PEN OF GRANT WOODHAMS. When I read through Grants 'Nights To Remember'... series, I can't help to reflect on the significant role Con Migro played in bringing these World famous riders and Test Matches to Australia for us all to enjoy. Who would have thought it was possible to attract top class riders from all over the world to compete at Claremont Speedway, season after season. The cost and logistics of doing so was enormous and yet Con Migro managed to find a way to do it. ......................... NIGHTS TO REMEMBER Claremont Speedway Friday 17th November 1978 By Grant Woodhams The seventh night of racing in the 1978/79 Claremont season was a memorable one. It saw the drama, intrigue and entertainment of a traditional Australia versus Great Britain Test match. It also saw a performance from one rider that everyone at Claremont that night would store away in their memory banks as 'pure excitement'. A week earlier the annual Sunday Times King of Claremont had been won by British Whiz kid Michael Lee. The nineteen-year-old tourist waging battle with his fellow countrymen Doug Wyer and Steve Bastable before finally lifting the trophy as well as setting a new three lap record of 64 seconds. But most in the big Claremont crowd thought that tonight would be different. The Australian Test team had arrived in town. Australia's best of the best. Last week local hero Mick McKeon had matched it with Lee and the British until he fell in his fourth heat and injured a wrist. Unfortunately, the injury would prevent him from riding tonight, but the Australian squad led by World Finalist's John Titman and Billy Sanders, the current Australian Champion, were looking to change things. Queenslander Titman was joined by his fellow Brisbane Exhibition Ground riders Steve Koppe and Mike Farrell. Sanders and Newcastle based Dave Shields were from New South Wales. And leading Victorian Danny Kennedy was considered so good that he was selected ahead of Phil Crump in the line up. WA's sole representative would be Michael Moores who was named as Reserve. Apart from Lee, Wyer and Bastable the GB team featured World Finalist Gordon Kennett, veteran star Nigel Boocock, Birmingham's Alan Grahame and the youngest rider in the team, Phil Collins the third of the hugely successful Collins brothers. Australia was managed by former five times Australian Champion Jim Airey, while Phil Mountford managed the Brits and claimed that he had a good international team to manage, good enough to make his job easy. The British team's breastplate featured a yellow lion on a Union Jack, while the Australian team's breastplate was green with a yellow kangaroo. It was the prescribed test format, eighteen races, four riders per race and points allocated three for first, two for second, one for third. All heats were over three laps from a gate start. A coin toss would determine starting positions. GB won the toss and elected to run out of gates 1 and 3 in the first heat. As previously reported the track record had been reduced to 64 seconds by Michael Lee. It may well be tested again tonight. The first heat saw the Queensland pair of Titman and Farrell up against Wyer and Collins. Wyer the former track record holder was favoured to get the Brits off to a flying start, but it was Titman who made the best gate. While Titman gated superbly Farrell overcooked his bike and fell at the start. Titman all the way from Wyer and Collins. The time a tidy 65.9 seconds. Score three all. Heat number two brought two of the most popular riders to the line early in the night. Arguably the two best riders from both teams Michael Lee and Billy Sanders would face each other. The six feet tall Lee was spectacular to watch as he blasted to the front and ran away from Steve Bastable who held Sanders at bay with David Shields in his first race at Claremont running fourth. Lee didn't trouble his record stopping the clock at 65.5 seconds. Score GB 5 - Aust 1. Progressive Total GB 8 - Aust 4. So, to Heat three with Gordon Kennett who claims, along with Lee and Sanders, is a future World Champion. Kennett was paired with Alan Grahame taking on Steve Koppe and Danny Kennedy. The first couple of heats had seen some action at the starting tapes and it came as no surprise to the crowd when Gordon Kennett was disqualified for a tape infringement. The crowd was well and truly involved. Despite Kennett's exclusion a win to Grahame gave GB the points as Kennedy's bike failed him, while Koppe finished second. Grahame's time was not recorded. Score GB 3 - Aust 2. Progressive Total GB 11 - Aust 6. Australia was feeling the pressure after these three initial heats. Machinery issues would soon come into play as the British tourists, well settled after more than a week in Perth, were more like the home team while the Australians battled to make the changes necessary to be more competitive. A track grade and a sidecar race gave the Australians an opportunity to regroup. A three lap Sidecar Scratch race was won by Dennis Nash/Russell Hearn (13) from Bryan Dyson/Mick O'Shea (17) and Ryan Flint/Ian Jones (16). No time was recorded. Back to Test match action now and Heat Four with Doug Wyer and Phil Collins flying the Union Jack while Billy Sanders will team with Michael Moores who has come in to replace Dave Shields. Moores makes the most of the opportunity and stuns his far more fancied competitors in winning the race. Sanders can only finish third however as Phil Collins holds him out in finishing second. Surprisingly Wyer runs fourth. Moores time was 65.5 seconds. Score GB 2 - Aust 4. Progressive Total GB 13 - Aust 10 Bring on Michael Lee for Heat Five with Steve Bastable joining him in a five to one thumping of Koppe and Kennedy. Kennedy finished third. Lee's second win of the night. The fastest time to 64.2 seconds. Score GB 5 - Aust 1. Progressive Total GB 18 - Aust 11. At this stage you might have been thinking that the alarm bells were ringing in the Australian corner. Ring loudly they did too because Titman and Farrell came out for Heat Six and rode like men possessed. The fancied Kennett was having a very average time and teammate Grahame could manage nothing against the two Queenslanders. Farrell in winning went around in 65 seconds. Score GB 1 - Aust 5. Progressive Total GB 19 - Aust 16. This was as good as it was going to get for the Australians though. The next three heats would well and truly bury them. Heat Seven Wyer first, Collins second, Koppe third, Kennedy fourth. No time taken. Score GB 5 - Aust 1. Progressive Total GB 24 - Aust 17. Heat Eight Lee first, Bastable second, Titman third, Farrell out with engine trouble. Lee's time 64.4 seconds. Score GB 5 - Aust 1. Progressive Total GB 29 - Aust 18. Heat Nine Kennett finally gets his act together, Grahame second, Moores third. It should be noted that Moores led most of this race until engine failure forced him out. He pushed his bike across the line to finish third. There was some confusion as to whether Dave Shields or Billy Sanders was the other Australian in this race. No matter though, whoever it was was disqualified. Kennett's time 66.6 seconds. Score GB 5 - Aust 1. Progressive Total at the halfway mark GB 34 - Aust 19. The second Sidecar Scratch race of the night resulted in a win to Dyson and O'Shea over Nash and Hearn with Flint and Jones finishing third. The winning time 74.2 seconds. By comparison with the solo times it was around 8 to 9 seconds slower. The question for the Test Match now is whether any of the Australian's can make an impression. Titman and Farrell appear to be the best combination, but Farrell's bike is unreliable. Heat Ten sees them at the gate against Wyer and Collins. Titman again gets the upper hand and takes another win. Farrell's bike lets him down while Wyer runs second and Collins third. Titman's time is 65.3. Score GB 3 - Aust 3. Progressive Total GB 37 - Aust 22. With Lee and Bastable taking on Sanders and Shield in Heat Eleven the crowd has sensed that the game might be over, the result settled. Sanders who less than a year ago had won his first Australian Championship at Claremont has had a very poor night and has hardly fired a shot. Shield hasn't done any better and this is underlined as Lee, Bastable trailing behind him, make short work of their opponents. Lee in 64.3 seconds. Score GB 5 - Aust 1. Progressive Total GB 42 - Aust 23. I'm sure as they rode to the line for Heat Twelve that Australia's Steve Koppe and Danny Kennedy didn't know how they would handle Kennett and Grahame. Kennett who had started the night out with a disqualification was coming good with another win. Koppe at least managed a second. Grahame would finish third. Kennett was two seconds slower than Lee, still 66.3 seconds was good enough. Score GB 4 - Aust 2. Progressive Total GB 46 - Aust 25. The last six heats will be academic really. It is hard to see Australia coming back from a twenty-one-point deficit. Still there has been some brilliant riding. Lee so far is undefeated and is looking at a Test Match maximum. John Titman is second top in points, but the rest of the Australians are nowhere. The parochial crowd grumble that an all WA team would have put up a better fight with the likes of Glyn Taylor, Neil Webb, Les Leisk, Lloyd Cross, Les Sawyer and Mark Williams. Possibly they may have, but we'll never know. On with the show: Heat Thirteen and Billy Sanders grabs his first win of the night. Michael Moores who has replaced Dave Shields in this one can only manage fourth though, Collins and Wyer finish in front of him. Billy's time 66.8 seconds the slowest of the night. Score GB 3 - Aust 3. Progressive Total GB 49 - Aust 28. Heat Fourteen Michael Lee again, though Danny Kennedy shows some form in this one finishing second with Bastable third and Koppe fourth. 65.2 for Michael and the points pile up for the British. Score GB 4 - Aust 2. Progressive Total GB 53 - Aust 30. Heat Fifteen John Titman shows why he's been selected with another stylish win. He proves too good for Kennett and Grahame with Michael Moores replacing Mike Farrell but unable to get any points. Titman's time 65.6 seconds. Score GB 3 - Aust 3. Progressive Total GB 56 - Aust 33. The third Sidecar Scratch race of the night - The Sidecar Big Three is run and results in a win to Bryan Dyson/Mick O'Shea over Dennis Nash/Russell Hearn with Ken Semmens/Dennis Mortimer finishing third. The time is 74.1 seconds. With any possibility of an Australian resurrection long since vanished the last three races are without much meaning except to those who have an interest in a particular rider. The riders themselves, the result long ago determined, appear at times to be going through the motions, but it is far from the truth. Some have come with big reputations and want to show how good they are. There are still points to prove. Heat Sixteen and Doug Wyer who has had a very quiet night by his own standards takes the win ahead of Phil Collins. Danny Kennedy finishes third with Steve Koppe tailed out in fourth. Wyer does not however reclaim his track record. His time 65.7 seconds. Score GB 5 - Aust 1. Progressive Total GB 61 - Aust 34. Heat Seventeen and all eyes on Michael Lee as he guns for a maximum. Six starts, six wins. Lee all the way taking it easy, his only concern John Titman but the Australian Captain can't mount a challenge. Bastable runs third. Australia's stocks are so low that Titman had no teammate in this race. Mechanical damage has played havoc with the Australians tonight. Lee's time a conservative 65.6 seconds. Score GB 4 - Aust 2. Progressive Total GB 65 - Aust 36. So, to the final heat of the Test Match. Gordon Kennett and Alan Grahame for Great Britain racing Billy Sanders and David Shields for Australia. And low and behold Sanders gets another win. Too little too late Billy! Grahame second and Kennett third. Shields is fourth. Sanders' time is 66.5 seconds. Score GB 3 - Aust 3. Progressive Total GB 68 - Aust 39. It was a disappointing outcome for the Australian team and a tough night for their supporters but what a great exhibition of solo racing we'd seen particularly from Michael Lee for the British, who was undefeated, and John Titman who stood out for the Australians at Claremont Speedway on yet another night to remember. Individual Points: Michael Lee GB 18 John Titman Aust 14 Doug Wyer GB 11 Steve Bastable GB 10 Alan Grahame GB 10 Phil Collins GB 10 Gordon Kennett GB 9 Billy Sanders Aust 9 Steve Koppe Aust 5 Danny Kennedy Aust 4 Michael Moores (Res) Aust 4 Mick Farrell Aust 3 Nigel Boocock (Res) GB 1 (replaced Kennett when he was disqualified in Heat 3) Dave Shields Aust 0 # Michael Lee would go on to win the World Championship in 1980, his only World Crown.
