23.01.2022 Hi there lovely people! Our club is running a CT and HT in June at Woady Yalock Equestrian Centre. We’d love you to spread the word and share our flyer around.... We’re a relatively small club, running a reasonable sized event: Do you know of anyone that could help out on either or both days? More hands on deck, means the day/s run more smoothly and hopefully more quickly. Please contact Janet Jackson on 0429 402 047 if you can give us a hand. Many thanks The Smythesdale and District Pony Club Committee.

08.01.2022 There's a lot of LOVE at Challeen Park.
07.01.2022 Finding a coach you trust and respect is a process that should never, ever begin with a prospective coach bagging you or your horse. A follower recently reached... out, asking me some questions about her dressage horse. One of the things she told me was that an onlooker who was also a ‘qualified’ coach said to her that her horse was going worse than previously. Swapping coaches to train with the onlooker, the follower found things going south very quickly, ending up with a tense horse and a bunch of behaviours she doesn’t know how to resolve. Quality in coaching is a tricky thing to find and a tricky topic to discuss. Firstly, there’s no room for negativity. Dressage is hard. Finding balance and keeping it? Hard. Developing power and keeping it? Also hard. Precision? Don’t even... And I ride a team of horses every day. I’m not an amateur rider with my one horse navigating through the terms and movements and aids and responses and rewards and- *sigh. There are enough hard things to tackle without adding detrimental comments to the list. Any coach that tackles coaching with negativity has forgotten how humans and animals operate. Negativity begets negativity. Marketing oneself as a coach should follow an attraction model. A ‘be like me’ or ‘be like my students’ approach. For example, the coach should ride well or have ridden well at a high level (and no, Novice is not a high level). Or the coach should have students you want to ride like and be like. The coach should also be a good sport as either a coach or a competitor (they would be known as having a ‘professional’ attitude and behaviour). Ideally, your coach should have a high degree of knowledge in a particular area (dressage, show jumping, camp drafting), evidenced by either students doing well in that discipline or their own high performance at that discipline. They should also be continually learning themselves and fostering their own education (you’ve all heard the phrase ‘lifelong learners’ despite its dreadful name, it’s a thing). Bagging you, or your horse, or your existing coach, or your parents is bad marketing. And bad sportsmanship. It makes my skin crawl. Also, don’t be afraid to put your critical analyst hat on. What is ‘qualified’. I’ve heard ‘qualified’ coaches who wouldn’t know their shoulder-in from their shoulder blade. I also know coaches who are very good Grand Prix trainers who don’t have an NCAS certificate (a common qualification in Australia). Anyone who’s sat on a horse can get an NCAS certificate. It’s there to help those at grass roots level understand the bare basics of coaching. It’s more like an enrolment approval at university than a High Distinction in a subject. Trust your own judgement when it comes to picking a new coach. Do you like them? Do you want to be like them? Do you like what they’ve done? Coaches are often like teachers. It is likely you will graduate and move onto a new one. This is normal. Don’t feel bad about it. A good coach will know this and expect it when it happens. Your coach should feel proud that you’ve graduated. (And for those coach-hoppers out there consider a little stability for a couple of years. You’ll be surprised how far you go with a little patience.) Every student feels frustrated in the short term. Riders always overestimate what they’ll achieve in the short term and underestimate what they’ll achieve in the long term. A good coach will always be banging on about the long-term benefits of training. Much like your teachers did at school. I know some amazing coaches. They are humble and thoughtful and people-oriented. They are supportive of other riders and coaches, even when they’re not paid to be. They are good horsewomen and men. They ask questions when they don’t know the answer. They will tell you when you need outside help. They are good sportspeople. They don’t make you feel bad. They think of your horse first. They have a wealth of experience you don’t see on Facebook or Instagram. They are kind and have a sense of humour. Do your homework and trust your instincts when it comes to deciding on a coach. You’ll be spending lots of time with them and handing them your hard earned cash. You don’t want to be heading to the counsellor’s office (or the wine bottle) afterwards. If that’s not enough motivation, think about your horse. Ask yourself what your horse will get out of it. Both of you deserve someone worthy. -Sally
