18.01.2022 Thank goodness!

17.01.2022 I’ll be doing this with the kids today.

09.01.2022 In loving memory, Dr Catherine Hamlin AC, 1924 - 2020 It is with great sadness that we are writing this post. Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula... Ethiopia, passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia on Wednesday March 18th, 2020. She was 96 years old. It is a very sad time for those who knew Catherine her family, her patients, her colleagues and her thousands of supporters around the world. In this time of sorrow, we reflect upon her life and celebrate it for what it was: a gift to some of the world’s most vulnerable women. Catherine was always grateful to those who supported her dream of eradicating obstetric fistula in Ethiopia. Thank you for being part of our community. Without you, Catherine’s incredible life's work would not have been possible. 03.01.2022 MASKS FOR EVERYONE The respected The Lancet medical journal has taken a stand in favour of everyone in the community wearing masks in an effort to eliminate tra...nsmission of the coronavirus disease #COVID19. They say that medical masks should be preserved for frontline healthcare workers, and that cloth masks are adequate for use in the general community. The aim is to protect others if you are infectious, whether or not you have symptoms. They say mass masking is an act of altruism and solidarity. I think it is time for us to have this conversation in Australia as we plan for the next phase of the pandemic response. #Masks4All

03.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE: PROTECTING TEACHERS AND STUDENTS It really has been a tough week, and I’d just like to acknowledge in particular how tough it has been for tea...chers this week. The big question everyone is asking is why have schools not been closed down in response to the COVID19 epidemic? Epidemiologists have told us that to be effective, school closures have to be done early. Yes it will be inconvenient, but so is being on life support in ICU. We heard that Singapore managed to flatten the curve without closing its schools. But there are some big differences. In Singapore children had their temperatures checked on arrival at the school gate and sent home if they had a fever or symptoms. They had widespread testing with strict isolation of confirmed cases. Once past the school gates, children were expected to wash their hands with soap and water. Meanwhile here in Australia, schools are reporting that they have run out of soap. Not to mention paper towels. Schools have been told to stay open, but to impose social distancing of 1.5m. Completely impractical. Have they met a group of six year olds? Or a group of teenagers for that matter? There is also another big cultural difference. In Australia, a lot of parents send sick children to school, putting teachers at risk of infection. This COVID19 epidemic takes that risk to a whole new level. I especially worry about the teachers who are older or who have chronic medical conditions like asthma or diabetes. We need innovative approaches. Like redeploying teachers to set up online learning in virtual classrooms. We already have models of distance education in operation. We need to decide who our essential workers are and make arrangements for the care of their children. We have to be getting our heads around the school situation now. The window of opportunity for school closures to be effective in preventing spread is rapidly closing. If schools stay open the government has to do more, much more to improve protections for students and staff.
