12.01.2022 Vale Jessie Lawler It is with deep sadness that Chamber Strings of Melbourne must inform it's past players, supporters and friends that Jessie Lawler passed away this afternoon after a short but determined fight with cancer. She had been at Caritas Christi for a short period following some weeks of other hospitalisation, operation etc. ... In a message to the CSM family earlier today our Treasurer and a long and loyal friend of Jessie's, Traudl Moon remembered her with the following words: "As you know Jessie worked tirelessly for The Chamber Strings’ young musicians, and was in turn much loved by them, as well as Friends of The CSM. She was a thoroughly good woman and I will miss her terribly. Traudl" All of us who knew Jessie will be saddened by this news. We will pass on any information regarding Jessie's farewell via this page as soon as it is known. "May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest"

07.01.2022 THE PASSING OF AN ERA It is with great sadness that The Chamber Strings of Melbourne informs its followers and former members of the passing of our founder, Dr Alexandra Cameron MBE, who died on Thursday at the remarkable age of 107 years. Dr Cameron, or 'Cam' as she was affectionately known to many, changed the face of music education in Victoria. With an early background as a lecturer in music education at the University of Melbourne, she became the State’s first school mu...sic inspector in 1966, with responsibility for the total development of music education in secondary schools, and an interest in group performance. Dr Cameron started a Saturday Music School in 1967 out of which grew the Melbourne Youth Orchestra. The Chamber Strings of Melbourne was founded in 1980 by Dr Cameron, with Harry Hutchins as its original director. At the time CSM was set up to provide talented string players with the chance to perform and learn string repertoire together and to undertake international tours, many of which were either sponsored or organised by Dr Cameron. Since that time The Chamber Strings of Melbourne has created unique performance opportunities for hundreds of gifted young musicians, many of whom have gone on to pursue full time professional careers in many of the leading orchestras in this country. Overseas tours have seen the orchestra perform in every major European capital and throughout the UK, Russia, China, Japan and the USA. We extend our condolences to Dr Cameron's family, and record out thanks to a truly remarkable woman. It is hoped that a suitable memorial concert can be organised at some point in the future to enable all former members of CSM to gather and remember Dr Cameron's wonderful contribution to Melbourne's musical life. Rest in peace Dr Cameron.
