17.01.2022 We had a great day for the final of the Waverley District Tennis Association Hot Shots League. Wellington Tennis Club won both of its matches and more importantly the kids conducted themselves in a great sporting manner. Well done to Nottinghill Pinewood and Legend Park for participating.

16.01.2022 I predicted Sam Groth would be asked to play the reverse singles with his compatriot Lleyton Hewitt. Yesterday we saw passion at its best. Congratulations to Sam Groth and Lleyton Hewitt for their brilliant performances under immense pressure.

15.01.2022 Does this apply to you on the tennis court?

14.01.2022 Here is Roger Federer at 4 years old during a tennis lesson.

13.01.2022 How cool is this...overlay of red ball/pro footage showing a very similar rally tempo, you won't get that by placing 7 year old players on a full court! Thank you Simon Wheatley for a great presentation.

12.01.2022 A great story about Teliana who had a very poor upbringing in Brazil. Now she's the best tennis player there after years and years of hard work. To our kids here in Australia who have big dreams, there is no substitute to hard work.

10.01.2022 Mindset by Carol Dweck (Review by Rufus Keown, Victorian Tennis Academy) You have to work hardest for the things you love most. And when it comes to (tennis) ...youre in for the fight of your life. Few books have as much insight for a tennis coach working with young people than Carol Dwecks Mindset. Mindset is the result of Dwecks research into how our beliefs have such a profound impact on our lives. In her research Dweck found people fell into two main mindsets. A FIXED mindset assumes ones character, intelligence and skill are permanent and that we cant change them in a meaningful way. People with a fixed mindset avoid failure and therefore challenge to make sure they are seen as skillful, smart or talented. A GROWTH mindset, on the other hand, thrives of challenge and uses failure and losses as opportunities to learn, improve and develop. Interestingly you often hear many of the worlds best players reflect a growth mindset: When one player is better than you, at that moment, the only thing you can do is work, try and find solutions. Rafa Nadal In one mindset effort is a bad thing it means you are not talented enough, you shouldnt need to make the effort. In the other mindset effort is what makes you talented. * * * The research shows that both mindsets are manifest from a very early age. A study of four year olds showed a preference for fixed or growth mindsets emerging already. In the study the children were given an easy puzzle to complete. They were then given a choice of doing another easy puzzle (fixed mindset); or trying a harder one (growth). The children who choose the easy puzzle had fun when they succeeded. But as soon as they were given more challenging tasks they quickly stopped enjoying themselves and their performance got worse and worse. The children who selected the harder puzzles continued to enjoy themselves and their performance got better. This is the most troubling aspect of Dwecks research for fixed mindset individuals. Outstanding achievers were not that remarkable as children and didnt show clear talent until their training began in earnest. Of most importance for tennis coaches is that the growth mindset can be cultivated through effort and deliberate practice. As coaches we have an enormous impact of the development of the athletes in our care, and if we create a passion for learning; over a hunger for success (i.e. chasing junior ranking points) then we can foster a growth mindset. Dwecks research shows that the language we use is a most powerful influencer of mindset. In the cases where children were showered with praise for their performance you must be so smart or you have a lot of natural talent they choose the easier subsequent tasks. When told that you must have worked really hard or all that physical training is paying off the kids challenged themselves with a harder problem. Kids praised for being talented were pushed right into the fixed mindset. When praised for effort, 90% of them wanted the challenging new task they could learn from. Nurturing a growth mindset would have to be the #1 gift you could give a child under your care. If they are hoping to become a professional then the challenges, failures and losses they encounter will be devastating if they have a fixed mindset. If they are just hoping to be the best tennis player they can be then tennis is a great place to learn from disappointments and setbacks. The best teachers (coaches) teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort and keep on learningthey have to care about every single student. Mindset is a must read for tennis coaches who want to make a positive impact on their tennis kids.
