18.01.2022 Sydneys southwest and northwest have the bulk of properties eligible for the recently announced $25,000 cashback for buyers of new houses but few opportunities to access the grant are available elsewhere. Analysis of listings data revealed most of the eligible house and land packages were more than 50km from the CBD, including in a cluster of suburbs near the planned Badgerys Creek airport. Eligible properties include newly built houses priced under $750,000, with the buyers... required to be on an annual income of less than $125,000 if purchasing alone or $200,000 as a couple. Mortgage Choice CEO Susan Mitchell said it was unfortunate that the scheme provided so little support for Harbour City residents but added that it may encourage more Sydneysiders to purchase homes in regional areas. Mortgage broker James Algar said the $25,000 offer would only be effective in encouraging buyers who were sitting on the fence. Most older homes are cheaper than new properties, he said. The council also wants the abolition of stamp duty, the broadening of the GST and a "welcome migration" campaign aimed at luring foreigners to Australia.
