10.01.2022 Remembering Geoffrey Goldie today..on what would have been his 98th Birthday. A truly unique person, artist , mentor, visionary and friend. The artistic inspiration for the Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy and Bharatam Dance Company.

10.01.2022 Another great legend has passed.. The Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy is saddened to hear of the passing of Guru Rajee Narayan in Mumbai. For us she is remembered reverently for her music compositions of several dances, particularly the 3 Varnams which are such an important part of the Bharatalaya repertoire : Gokula Bala (Tamil), Madhavan Mohananai (Tamil), and Suna Mori Binati (Hindi).... Our sincere condolences to her family, students and fans.

06.01.2022 I got up at 5am and lit candles in the window. Watched the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Rememberance. Many of you did not know Geoffrey Goldie served in the 2nd World War, and was a War Veteran. He was recruited at the age of nineteen in 1940 and served in several army camps in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, and Darwin before being sent to New Guinea. He was on the Frontline in the Engineering section. This section's service was to build pontoon bridges so that Aus...tralian troops could advance further into New Guinea which had been invaded by the Japanese Army. The Goldies had 4 sons in the war. Maxwell, Bert, Ron (Geoffrey's twin brother) and Geoffrey. Max was killed by a sniper in New Guinea, Bert was a pilot and was shot down in Europe and was detained in a Prisoner of War camp. He survived, came home after the war and married Gladys and had 3 daughters. Ron served in Australia at several camps. After the war he married Iris and they had 3 children. Geoffrey came home from the war in 1945 and was able to find a job as a Graphic artist with his skilled ability to draw and paint. He moved from Port Fairy where the Goldie farm and land was to Melbourne, boarding with his maternal grandfather in Moonee Ponds. Later he moved to a loft accommodation in St. Kilda and in the mid 1950's he bought Orwell Cottage. After the war Geoffrey took ballet classes under Madame Borovansky. He was attracted to all forms of dance and saw the magical performance of Indian dancer Shivaram, in 1948, which left such a lasting impression on him. Geoffrey furthered his involvement in art studying under the artist George Bell, known in the arts world as the Father of Australian Modernism. From the 1950's until his passing in 2007 Orwell Cottage was home, studio, a place to work and entertain, an unusual garden created, and in the 1970's home to the Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy. On this day we pay homage to him and his brothers, and we pause to wonder at his legacy in the arts, stage designs, Orwell Cottage, and in the legacy he left me with, in believing in the power of the arts to transform our lives. Chandrabhanu LEST WE FORGET
