22.01.2022 Kashmir silver was very sought after in the late 19th century, even being sold by Hamilton’s in Calcutta and the best London shops. These recently acquired beakers c.1870 are a typical form and exhibit high quality hand chasing. In English, the common droplet-shaped motif found on silver items and Kashmir shawls is named after the Scottish town Paisley, which became famous for its imitation shawls in the first half of the 19th century. Locally, it is called boteh, meaning ‘shrub’.

06.01.2022 Sir Vijaysinhji, Maharaja of Rajpipla, was a man-about-town in the 1920s. He owned a world-class stable of champion racehorses and showed extraordinary prowess on the polo field. The Kingdom of Rajpipla was a princely state in India ruled by the Gohil Rajput dynasty for over 600 years from around 1340 till 1948. This fine guilloche enamel, gilt silver and gold cigarette case was crafted by Mappin and Webb in London in 1924, either for the Maharaja or as a royal gift.
