20.01.2022 I was in Cloncurry just after the 1990 floods. The airforce came over from Townsville with fodder for the cattle and wanted little people to push it out of the plane while they flew over the herds. I volunteered I think I would have a better understanding of the devastation nowadays. My family hadn't had much experience with flooding like here, it was all new to me.

17.01.2022 The Shires of Murweh and Paroo are pleased to announce the completion of a pair of artworks ‘in the round’ painted by native Queenslander and internationally re...nowned mural artist, Guido van Helten. The new artworks cover the old water towers standing at 30 meters high in the towns of Charleville and Cunnamulla. The projects were undertaken in tandem by the artist and his team, created collaboratively with the towns of Cunnamulla and Charleville. The artist began a photography and community engagement project with New South Wales photographer Mitchell Fong to get to know the people and places and gain inspiration for the mural works. The pair met with local community members and attended several training sessions, practices, and games speaking with local girls and boys. The artworks painted on the local water towers in each town stand as a pair of works in communication with one another. This is a unique concept for the artist who from his experiences in the region chose to explore the motivations for and connections encouraged by youth sporting activities in these remote areas. Using sport as a lens, the pair learned how Charleville and Cunnamulla connect, play and grow across gender, cultural and demographic differences. The artist describes his experience from this project: Through this project we seek to understand the importance of rugby league to outlying communities in regional Queensland as a case study for similar places across Australia. Working collaboratively with photographer Mitchell Fong, this project aims to commemorate the cultural significance of this simple game in regional Western Queensland as an often-overlooked means of bridging the divides of distance and cultural differences in rural Australia. We documented and discussed with community leaders from both towns and learned stories comparing similarities and finding commonalities in their differences, and of course of the continued importance for young men, women and diverse demographics. He goes on to say, Separated by 200 kilometres, Cunnamulla and Charleville are joined by a rivalry a yearly two-sided tournament which culminates in a grand final where they are destined to compete. Working on the two towns’ identical 30 meter water towers the photography project has led to a painted monument symbolising the regional significance of a simple game. One of the local organisers, Lawrence Anderson, puts it plainly, if we don’t connect, we won’t be a community. Realistically. That’s why all this here is connecting, they’re all connecting with each other through play, communication. And he also discusses the importance of socialisation across divides through sport, You know, we’d go and play footie [in other towns], you’d try and bust each other, come off, shake hands, have a soft drink, have a beer, have a yarn. So, you’ve got that constant contact [with people in other towns] and you get more bonding with those, all those guys from different areas. And once you make a friend there, like I said, you, if you break down in Charleville, Roma, St George, you know, Augathella, Quilpie, you’ve got a contact to go to, to help you out if you’re stuck, you know? Like I said, football is just a tool and a stepping stone for a better life or a better- makes you a better person. Mr. van Helten will be moving on to planned projects in Poland and Portugal as well as a large project in Minnesota in continuation of his ongoing series of large-scale murals in the US Midwest where he has been exploring identity and challenging accepted notions of this vast region of the US. The water tower is a Cultural Centre project with support from Murweh Shire Council, started with the support of Mayor Denis Cook and continued with the support of the current Council.
