24.01.2022 Yoga & Osteoporosis - The Truth So this means I shouldnt bend or twist my spine so I can no longer practice yoga right? Wrong, absolutely not! It may mean you have to modify some poses but your spine LOVES to be moved through all planes of movement as long as you avoid any extreme ranges. It is however a good idea to ensure you find a yoga teacher who has experience working with students who have osteoporosis in order to keep you safe. ... We dont spend a lot of time seated in classical yoga poses like cross-legged as so many of our students have knee, hip or back issues. Were also very used to dealing with Osteoporosis and can advise you which planes of movement not to push too far in. Most of the yoga poses that are contraindicated for Osteoporosis in the spine are ones that we dont teach anyway as we feel they are too extreme for most bodies, osteoporosis or not! Rest assured that yoga can safely be practiced by anyone with osteoporosis. There is actually a great research piece conducted by Dr Loren Fishman which showed a reduction in osteoporotic bone loss - here is the research article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4851231/ and if you are interested, you can look up Lorens actual program too although I dont suggest you practice it without guidance as youll need to modify it based on your specific bodily restrictions when you first start. Come to class instead! Charley

24.01.2022 Triangle Pose This is one of those poses that I often see categorized as level 1 or beginner level. I hate how poses have somehow become categorised like this. Its just plain ridiculous to categorize a yoga pose in the first place, let alone make people feel like there are such things as "levels" to progress towards in yoga. Triangle pose can be easy or challenging depending on so many variables like: how we approach it... what props we use how we prepare first who is doing it and is it their first time doing it what else you have done on that day (eg. sat at a desk for long periods) current injuries or restrictions How long it is held for I could keep going and going with this list for this pose or any other for that matter! It must be tailored to the individual. I always include lots of warming up before we even comtemplate this pose, it involves so many different body parts both stretching, strengthening or balancing us. It stretches and strengthens the thighs, knees, and ankles. Stretches the hips, groins, hamstrings, and calves; shoulders, chest, and spine. Along with training the core muscles and proprioceptive system to balance us in an unsual position. A block or chair is an ideal prop if you cant reach to the floor but leg is ok too since were not sharing props at the moment. What do you think of triangle pose? Love it, hate it or getting to know it still? Charley

24.01.2022 Did you love your first ever yoga class? If you didn't or perhaps even hated it then you are not alone! It's a familiar story that I hear all the time from people enquiring about our unique approach. Watch the video for my tips on how to ensure this doesn't happen to you. I'd love to hear your stories about whether you loved or hated your first ever yoga class. Charley

24.01.2022 Standing Forward Bend With A Twist If you think thats a mouthful, try wrapping your tongue around the sanskrit name for this pose; Parivrtta Prasarita Padottanasana . Errr, now you know why I rarely call the poses by their sanskrit names. To make it all a little easier, here are some progressions to make the pose manageable and to warm into going a little further into it each time if thats what you want to do. Were not sharing props at the moment so I didnt inclu...de the block on the floor but you could use one to assist you. So, what is this pose good and bad for? Well, it depends on the person and there arent really any poses that are good or bad for particular things! Its how you do them that matters. Any pose can be modified for any person using any number of modifications, props or reorienting into a different variation. Do you enjoy this pose? Do you have a favourite variation? Charley

23.01.2022 Do you ever have those days where you feel like you arent strong enough to cope with what life is throwing at you? I think this is perfectly normal and we all feel this sometimes, especially given the current circumstances. I designed the practices for my classes this past week to help you to find that reserve of inner strength and personal power that is always there, just waiting for you to tap into. Im not saying that we should always be strong, that would be exhausti...ng to strive for. However, it can be comforting to remind ourselves that even though it might not feel like it at the time, we are strong and can find that feeling again. In yogic physiology the source of your personal power is at the solar plexus area, representing qualities of self-belief and confidence. The solar plexus (celiac plexus) plays an important role in the functioning of the stomach, kidneys, liver and adrenal glands. Focusing here fires up the digestive processes and brings awareness to sensations in the upper belly area. How did you find the practices this week if you were in one of my classes? Charley

22.01.2022 Because sometimes even yoga teachers finish their day off with a nice cold beer My son and I had a bit of a crappy day today so were sharing in a small moment of togetherness with a treat each. Yes, I am a Dockers fan for those of you that didnt already know! Charley

22.01.2022 Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it. -- Arundhati Roy

21.01.2022 The Change Ladies, whether youve already gone through it, or in the process of it like me, this webinar with my friend and fellow yoga therapist Lisa Fabry Nutrition and Yoga Therapy may be just what you need. Register to tune in or watch later to get some inspiration on how we can reframe this time in our lives. I can highly recommend Lisas work Charley

21.01.2022 Soooo cute Ok Im biased but this is my little granddaughter showing me her downward Facing dog in my kitchen yesterday, awwww! Charley

21.01.2022 As Ive tended my little garden recently, I ponder these lovely words In our meditation practice its interesting to notice where our thoughts go and its certainly not all roses, pardon the pun! However, we can make a choice not to overly engage with or follow thought patterns that do not serve us or take us in the direction we wish to go. Its not easy but noticing is the first step. What seeds are you planting today? Charley

21.01.2022 I want a bunker like this! Thanks Michael Leunig Appreciation Page A nice reminder that simplicity can bring happiness Charley

20.01.2022 Cooking up a storm in my kitchen at home today! Soups loaded with veggies feature heavily in my kitchen. Today Im doing minestrone minus the bacon and adding pesto and smoked paprika. Do you have a favourite soup recipe? Share it with me in the comments if you do. Im always looking out for new tried and tested ones. 19.01.2022 In my mind, this is what you all do at home between classes.... Am I right? Charley

19.01.2022 So lovely to see some of you on Friday for our ultimate indulgence yoga dinner! I can't believe this is our one and only event for the year, there will be more next year! Sorry there aren't any photos of the participants enjoying themselves. I believe these events are an opportunity for you to unwind and relax without us snapping photos of you during relaxation time, it doesn't seem right. However, if you attended and want to share how much you enjoyed it in the comments then please feel free! Charley

19.01.2022 Yoga with disco lights! Every Wednesday I teach in this community hall that has brightly coloured party lights that we practice under. I initially thought it would put people off but nope! Our Wednesday nights have been running for many years here with back to back sessions that are usually fully booked wtih waitlists. I remember a well meaning fellow business owner telling me that one day I might have my own studio like her and be successful and not need to teach in ...community halls. I felt disappointed that my classes were deemed as less valuable for this reason. Then I remembered that Ive never been one for following along with what everyone else is doing and that Id keep "bringing it to the people" in community halls. Not that there is anything wrong with lovely yoga studios, its just not for me. Well, ironically she closed a couple of years later and gave up yet here I still am. Our yoga classes are about our community not about how pretty our studio space is, our focus is on YOU, the students and all us teachers having our own regular practice, I hope you feel that. I am so lucky to get to spend time with you all each week, thank you Charley

19.01.2022 Twisting Warrior Variations The warrior poses are so versatile and such fun to play around with different variations. This week we tried on these twisting variations for size. I find warrior is great for getting you out of your head and into your body plus you can add a different focus depending on what you feel like; balance, ease, length, back/forward bend, hip range of movement, leg strength, core, shoulder rotating/releasing... the options are endless! Poses like thi...s are a dream for a yoga therapist and can be adapted for all abilities. Do you discover anything interesting when you try these variations? Charley

17.01.2022 Just hanging around.... this quick between the shoulders stretch is one of my favourites when I’be been in front of a screen more than usual. Let the arms be straight and pretty much just hang here, letting your weight shift back between the shoulder. Forget about that old idea of never slouching. There’s no such thing as bad posture, only the posture that you hold for too long at a time. All our body shapes are slightly different so slouch away, use the back of your chair, cross your legs, uncross them, stand up, sit down, lie down, move around - it’s all useful, just break it up and stay mindful so you don’t overdo one particular thing Charley

17.01.2022 Open your heart to receive the spring and breathe in the vitality it has the potential to bring. (Hey thats a cool little accidental rhyme!) This upward facing dog variation using a chair is a great way to stretch into the muscles of the chest and get the breath expanding into the upper part of your chest. Feel the strength of the arms and spine, yes, your spine is strong and reslilent, just like you are Charley

15.01.2022 Which one are you today? I think I might be the realist today and perhaps a lot of the time! Charley

14.01.2022 Spring is a time for clearing out that which no longer serves you & inviting in new thoughts, habits & ideas that do serve you. Out with the old and in with the new! Im letting go of thoughts that Ive had this first part of the year about not being strong enough to get through what COVID has left in its wake. Ive replaced that unhelpful thought that is no longer serving me with the mantra "I am strong" which has been my mantra for a few weeks now and is helping me a lot. Whats going out and whats staying in for you? Charley

14.01.2022 Can Your Mindset Change How You Age? Although I dont make any claims for less wrinkles or grey hair, this is an easy to understand piece what some of the research is telling us about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation Charley "Consider one study, for instance, showing that even a single day of a mindfulness meditation practice can down-regulate a gene that codes for inflammationone of the greatest drivers of aging. Or the one showing that reducing stress can re...duce the cellular damage from the highly reactive oxygen atoms known as free radicals. Or the research that found, most remarkably, that the telomeres within your cellsthe little cuffs that cap chromosomes and erode over your lifespancan actually be made to grow longer, provided your mind is in the right state to make it happen." https://time.com//how-your-mindset-can-change-how-you-age/

13.01.2022 We Janine! Thanks to this lovely lady who can usually catch teaching on a Friday morning in Applecross but she pops up all over the place when she is needed. We really appreciate all you do Janine and your students tell us they love you for your nurturing disposition, amazing teaching and bringing mindfulness into their lives. Find out a little more about Janine below and if you are lucky enough to have attended one of her classes, let her know the thing you liked most ab...out it in the comments. "My first experience of yoga was during my early years of raising a family. Life was a bit blurry with chronic tiredness when I noticed a sign outside the local recreation centre advertising a yoga class. I went along, curious and hoping for a good stretch and some quiet relaxation. The once a week class quickly became the one weekly appointment I worked life around so I would be there. My children are now young adults and yoga has been a constant source of calmness and clarity for many years. I followed my passion for yoga by completing the FinY Teacher Training course, gaining an appreciation for the science of yoga which I will be exploring for as long as I live. I regularly attend yoga classes with teachers of varying styles, plus yoga days at the Beacon Ashram, and workshops with visiting yoga trainers. I love bringing together what I learn from my numerous teachers and giving the gift of a yoga practise to others. Over time, I have experienced the subtle aspects of yoga. The simplicity of connecting with your own spirit via your breath is literally a "breath of fresh air". Awareness of the spirit within leads to awareness of our living connection with others. Yoga simply makes life better for all who practice."

12.01.2022 Breathe So simple yet so profound - do it now, just one conscious breath in and then out - how does it feel?

12.01.2022 to accept what we find within ourselves in this moment. This is where the magic happens in yoga. To utilise our unique, human self awareness and use it to notice what is happening in the body, mind & breath. Acknowledging and accepting what is there, exploring it with a new found curiosity and letting go of judgement. All feelings and emotions are normal, even so called negative emotions like fear, anger and hatred. Changing our relationship with how we vi...ew them can change everything. We are not our emotions, they are simply visitors at the door of our awareness and we can let them in and watch them go again. I used to think I was an angry person but now realise everyone gets angry sometimes, it’s normal people! Charley

11.01.2022 Stressure When pressure makes you stressed. My 12yr old just came up with this explanation Stressure When pressure makes you stressed. My 12yr old just came up with this explanation

11.01.2022 A little fathers day yoga humour Thinking of all the wonderful Dads out there today but also all the "Dadding" that comes in less recognised forms including step dads, adoptive dads, fatherly role models, carers, crossover between Mums & Dads because families are never as straight forward as delineated Mum and Dad roles. Sending love also to those of us who might have a difficult day on Fathers day due to Dads lost too soon, never knowing ours or who have strained relationships with our Dads. Due to the diverse nature of this role, Im sure there are many other scenarios I havent thought of here too. Charley

10.01.2022 Gave me a much needed giggle today! Charley

09.01.2022 I’m being very spoilt today with balloons, breakfast, presents, shopping for more gifts, messages from loved ones and then later dinner with some more special people in my life. Geez I’m feeling grateful and also a little behind in sending out the online videos today. Please forgive me, they will be winging their way to you in the next half hour or so Charley

09.01.2022 Feeling grateful for these gorgeous flower cuttings from a friend that I potted up today! All ready to flower in the beautiful spring sunshine I love to have things growing in my garden that friends have given me. Each time I look at them it reminds me I am so lucky to have friends and be cared about! Charley

09.01.2022 Ive just been informed by my son that its International cheeseburger day! Yes, there really is such a thing. The joys of living with boys Charley

09.01.2022 Feeling a little deflated Sorry this is not a Monday morning motivational pep talk kind of post but this is the reality of how I feel today! You see Im lying on the pile of stuff I had to move when my yoga room sprung another leak on Saturday night! At first I was pretty p***ed off as the painters came and finished the last of the repairs last week from the June storm damage. However, I have quickly settled into acceptance that what has happened has happened and well mov...e forward from it one step at a time. It was a bit of an adventure holding the ladder whilst my husband climbed on the roof in the middle of the storm to try and stop the water pouring in. Our household didnt get to bed until after 1am - geez, havent stayed up that late in a while Apologies as the reopening of our yoga therapy room is delayed again but well get there Im sure. Thanks for your patience and understanding Charley

08.01.2022 Its a baking cupcakes kind of day today! Patiently waiting for my granddaughter and the others to come visit. Isnt it funny that when you have a grandchild you look forward to their visits the most?! I still love the rest of my family, honest. What a perfect way to spend a rainy day. What are you up to? Charley

08.01.2022 Noticing emotions as they arise is a neat trick that yoga helps us to learn. When we drop into spaces of stillness either between movements or at the beginning/end of our practice, this is when emotions often bubble up to the surface and come into our awareness. We dont need to do anything with them as such except to notice they are there and allow them to be. In yoga this is the practice of self study and moves us that little bit closer to glimpsing our true nature. Do you find this happens for you sometimes during your practice? Charley

06.01.2022 Behind the scenes - filming this weeks online classes. This week we embrace the changing of the season and leaning in to change along with stretching and lengthening the body I used to wonder why there were so many credits at the end of a movie and it took so many people; now I totally get it! Jarrod and I are the sound, lighting, script, creative, costume, make up, production, directing and editing team all rolled into one We got some great tips from the amazing team at Girl Director which helped us heaps, thanks guys! Charley

06.01.2022 Bear pose?! Thought this was very cute, although bears scare the absolute pants off me Charley

06.01.2022 Self-love, kindness, compassion & connection...these are the things that we are embodying and cultivating in our practices this week in my classes. When we come together to practice, that has a very special meaning in a yoga context - its called "sangha" which is when a community of like minded people come together. This picture is the closest I could get to a big virtual hug since I cant give you a real one. Thank you for being a part of this yoga sangha, Im so grateful you are here Charley

05.01.2022 Reminiscing...I just came across this photo of me and my young son who is now 12! This picture featured in the local paper as I was just returning to teach all my classes after some time off with this precious little man and my other boys. Those days were a haze of love, craziness, sleepless nights and in the midst of it all my yoga practice was the one steady constant feature. I returned to teaching earlier than expected to my Wednesday morning class after only 6 we...eks as the relief teacher had an unexpected surgery. I panicked at first but then found I looked forward to teaching each week and my Mum often brought my son down to class so students could have cuddles after class and I could feed him. It reminds me how adaptable and resilient we can be in the face of unexpected change. Without the help of close friends and family along with understanding of my students I could never have pulled this off. You dont have to struggle alone, hands of support are nearly always reaching out to you, you simply have to reach out and take them. Thank you to everyone who helped me during that time, I am forever grateful Charley

05.01.2022 Just because....well seriously, who doesnt love Chris Hemsworth?! And, this man speaks the truth, listen to his advice and then get on with your day whatever it has in store for you Charley

04.01.2022 Aaaaand I’m on the last week of my ‘preventing chronic pain’ unit! It feels like forever as 2 weeks into this 10 week module, I had to put it all on pause to do another live training for 8 weeks. Luckily online study is very flexible these days, phew! What have you learnt lately? Doesn’t have to be a formal course, could be something small, please share Charley

03.01.2022 Slow is the new fast Craving the slower pace we had a taste of during lockdown? I hear you! I wrote this BLOG a while ago about slowing down and as the world picks up pace, I feel its relevant again. I feel very passionately about taking the time to sloooow down! "I feel like Im stuck in a time warp with everyone buzzing around me and Im standing in the middle of it feeling very out of place. I hate to generalize but in my experience, most people find it hard to slo...w down or just genuinely believe that they cant. Reasons vary with some not wanting to slow down and wearing their speed like a badge of honor and then those that want to slow down but just cant seem to find the time or just dont know how!" Let me tell you more about why its so great and 10 benefits to slowing down occasionally in my full BLOG article here https://www.charleyoga.com.au/slow-is-fast-beginners-yoga-/ Charley

03.01.2022 Mmmm....cookies! These look easy and delicious, can’t wait to try them. What are you cooking up this week? Lots of Christmas cooking happening already, I’ve already received some very thoughtful homemade gifts this week. Charley https://thehealthychef.com//healthy-vegan-chocolate-chip-c

03.01.2022 You don’t need a big space to do a home practice! Even though we do have a yoga room, this is where my husband practices on our trusty old rug. It works best for him and he often watches the news whilst rolling out his back and shoulders. We run a workshop teaching how to use the massage balls and rollers that will hopefully run again next year. It’s great for getting into persistently tight spots Charley

03.01.2022 More warrior variations this week, this time warrior legs and eagle arms combined. A great variation for exploring strength into the legs and stretching between the shoulder blades. The eagle arms can be tricky for many so don't worry if you can't make the exact shape that I am here. Arms crossed or even one arm in front and the other resting on your hip are all options for shoulder restriction. How were your shoulders after our shoulder mobilising sequences this week if you came along to my class? Charley

02.01.2022 I Am Well This is the mantra we're using in my classes this week as we focus on the mind aspect of our being. It can be great to use a mantra that means something but it's also shown that you can use a fairly meaningless mantra and it has a similar effect. Research also backs up that mantra can have a calming effect on the mind. This is not a new idea. Since the 1970s, Herbert Benson, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and founder of the Benson-Henry Institute f...or Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, has been researching how meditation can alter mental and physical states. He’s been particularly interested in what brings on a meditative state, which he calls the relaxation response. Benson has experimented with subjects repeating Sanskrit mantras as well as nonreligious words, such as one. He’s found that regardless of what the practitioner repeats, the word or phrase has nearly the same effects: relaxation and the ability to better cope with life’s unexpected stressors. Do you like using mantras during your practice? How about chanting om at the end of your class, what is your experience of it? Charley

02.01.2022 What a gorgeous gift on a gloomy day from two of my favourite ladies, you know who you are, thank you! Such an apt ending to a week spent embracing the spring and now my house smells like spring! Makes me want to take extra deep breaths to enjoy it fully Charley

01.01.2022 WOW! Im (almost) speechless at this wonderful article that the lovely @Heather Robbins wrote from our interview a few weeks ago. If youd like to know a little more about why I do what I do and how it all came to be then please follow the links to the full article. Reading it back makes me realise Ive come a long way and I thank you all for walking alongside me on this journey. Feeling very grateful and a little bit proud too. Thank You Charley https://www.facebook.com/simpleaspiyoga/posts/1012681399189078

01.01.2022 Gorgeous at the beach today for a little stroll. What does your self care look like today? Charley

01.01.2022 Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit Do you have worrying thoughts sometimes, or perhaps it feels like all the time!? Worrying is something that we all do, in fact thinking about things that have happened and the possible future impact of our actions is important for both our growth individually and our survival collectively. However, when that worrying becomes a constant whirl of thoughts and ‘what ifs’, this can cause a cascading effect into catastrophising. Cat...astrophising is where we might have one worrying thought of something that is happening or might happen and then other worries propagate uncontrollably from there. This can lead to feeling overwhelmed in the short term but in the long term can have negative impacts on our whole-body mind system and lead to a chronically stressed state in the body. The crazy part is that your body doesn’t know the difference between something that is actually happening and something that you are thinking about. So, by worrying excessively, we’re getting a chemical reaction occurring in the body in response to that thought. Mind blowing I know! A helpful practice we can do from a yogic perspective is first to acknowledge there is worry there, which is quite normal so don’t worry (sorry couldn’t resist that pun!) Then, we could explore using the breath and visualisation as a vehicle to release the worry. It might be one worry in particular or just in general. This doesn’t necessarily mean that worry will instantly disappear, but it may create a moment of space to bring in a visualisation of something more useful to us in that moment, perhaps the idea of peace or another word if that feels more right. So, inhaling peace, exhaling worry or as we sometimes joke around as yoga teachers inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit! Charley
