18.01.2022 "May each and every officer who has died serving the communities of Australia be at rest, and their memories and courage leave an indelible mark upon the police... family and all who serve in it. We will remember them." Earlier this month a group of 17 WA Police Force officers made the three day trip from Midland to Eucla, conveying a special baton with the names of the 85 WA officers killed on duty. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year's Wall to Wall Ride was a little different. After reaching the WA/SA border the group handed the baton to South Australian officers to continue its journey to the National Police Memorial in Canberra. The ride also held special significance for our brothers and sisters in Victoria, acting as a chance to honour the four officers lost in April.

17.01.2022 How very sad, some in our society have no respect.

17.01.2022 #OTD - Lieutenant Kenneth Hudspeth, RANVR awarded 3rd DSC On the 28th of November 1942, Lieutenant Kenneth Robert Hudspeth, RANVR was awarded the second bar to ...his Distinguished Service Cross in other words, he was awarded his 3rd DSC. Hudspeth served as a submariner in the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve, and was awarded the DSC on three occasions for his outstanding courage and devotion to duty. Hudspeth joined the RANVR at the start of WWII, and served on board a number of surface vessels before being promoted to Lieutenant and taking command of the Midget Submarine (X-Craft) X10. As CO of X10, Hudspeth participated in Operation SOURCE in September 1943, during which he positioned his vessel within four miles of the German Battlecruiser ‘Tirpitz’ after navigating through the treacherous Altern Fjord. Unfortunately, his submarine became stuck on the seabed and he was forced to withdraw. He was awarded his First DSC for his application and endurance in attempting the attack and the double passage of the Fjord reflected his determination and high level of skill. In 1944, Hudspeth was awarded his first Bar to his DSC for his part in Operation POSTAGE ABLE where he transported Combined Operations Pilotage Parties (COPP) to land on the coast of Normandy. During this time, he showed great coolness, grasp and ability in manoeuvring his X-Craft submerged in shallow waters close to enemy defences to land COPPs on heavily guarded positons of an enemy coast, in unknown and unpleasant conditions. Hudspeth was awarded his second and final Bar on the 28th of November 1944 for his gallantry, skill and determination during Operation GAMBIT. Similar to Operation POSTAGE ABLE, Hudspeth was involved in landing COPP along Juno Beach, the sight of the future Normandy Landings. Hudspeth retired in 1965 as a Lieutenant Commander after 25 years of service in war and peace. He was a war time hero, a volunteer, a Reservist and one of the most decorated Australian Naval Officers of WWII. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 13.01.2022 This painting truly represents the close bond of empathy and understanding between the Australian Light Horseman and his horse. This light horseman has been bit...terly disappointed, for the mail has come and he has missed out again. This was the experience of trooper Ion Idriess for this is what he wrote in his diary in 1916... "June 21st Yesterday fifteen bags of mail (thousands of letters) came for the 5TH. And yet there was not one solitary letter, parcel, or even newspaper for me." September 19th Why the hell don't I get any letters or parcels? My mates are always getting them: I don't get a lousy newspaper even." Another Light Horseman, Major Harold B Suttor wrote in his diary in May 1918.. "Thurs 9. One ton of mail arrives and not one letter for me - usual luck" Feeling forlorn and forgotten this Light Horseman has ridden his mount aside from the rest of his section, and feeling rather sorry for himself has plopped down on the ground to indulge in a little wallow in self pity alone. His horse may not understand just why his rider is so unhappy at this moment, but horses are very sensitive and intelligent creatures, and he certainly can feel that his master is upset. He bends his head down over his masters shoulder, nuzzling him perhaps with a little nicker of horse sympathy, to let him know that he is by his side, feeling his sadness, and he is not alone. His Light Horseman responds by laying his head against that of his horse and giving him a hug and caress. Perhaps soft words are spoken, perhaps none are needed, but mutual sympathy is expressed and appreciated by both, and so each are comforted and reassured by the other. https://hubs.ly/H0xfqXB0 The Australian Light Horse is an iconic part of our history. From the Boer War through World War One the Australina Light horse has taken its place in. We hope to keep their history and their story alive through our Light Horse inspired collections. Come and see our complete collection dedicated to the Australian Light horse and their mounts. #Beersheba #LightHorse #WW1 #WWI #GreatWar #AustralianLightHorse #Horse #History #historic #military #collection

09.01.2022 #OTD We Remember Dame Maud McCarthy, GBE, RRC and Bar Today we pause to remember the life and service of Dame Emma Maud McCarthy, GBE, RRC and Bar, who was bo...rn on the 22nd of September 1859. She would serve in the army as a nursing sister, eventually rising to become the army matron-in-chief during WWI. Dame Emma Maud McCarthy (1859-1949), was born on 22 September 1859 at Paddington, Sydney. In 1891 she was in England and studied general nursing training at London Hospital, Whitechapel as a probationer. Hospital records state that 'she had an exceptionally nice disposition' and was 'most ladylike and interested in her work' though 'she found it hard to control others, or to take firm action when necessary'. She was promoted sister in January 1894. Maud McCarthy was sister-in-charge of Sophia women's ward at the outbreak of the South African War and was one of the six sisters selected from London Hospital by Princess Alexandra to go to South Africa as her own 'military' nursing sisters. Resigning from the hospital on 25 December 1899, McCarthy served with distinction throughout 1899-1902 with the Army Nursing Service Reserve, receiving the Queen's and the King's Medal and the Royal Red Cross. Returning to England in July 1902, she was awarded a special decoration by Queen Alexandra. She then became involved in the formation of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service, was promoted matron within the service in February 1903 and during the next seven years was successively matron of Aldershot, Netley and Millbank military hospitals. In 1910 she was appointed principal matron at the War Office, a position she held until the outbreak of World War I. Matron McCarthy sailed in the first ship to leave England with members of the British Expeditionary Force, arriving in France on 12 August 1914. In 1915 she was installed at Abbeville as matron-in-chief of the B.E.F. in France and Flanders, taking charge of the whole area from the Channel to the Mediterranean, wherever British and allied nurses worked; she was directly responsible to General Headquarters. In August 1914 the number of nurses in her charge were 516; by the time of the Armistice they were over 6000. She was responsible for the nursing of hundreds of thousands of casualties in the years 1914-18. An indefatigable leader and administrator, she visited field units, casualty clearing stations, hospital trains, hospital ships and stationary and general hospitals. The constant shortage of trained nurses, continual postings of staff, and personnel requirements of individuals were handled with tact and skill. She was the only head of a department in the B.E.F. who remained in her original post throughout the war, although she was off duty with appendicitis in March-August 1917. She was recognised for her service following the war and was appointed G.B.E. in 1918, received a Bar to her Royal Red Cross and was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal, the Belgian Medaille de la Reine Elizabeth, and the French Légion d'honneur and Medaille des Epidémies. When she left France on 5 August 1919, representatives from the French government and the medical services saw her off. The meticulous records kept since her arrival in France were taken to England with her. Describing the matron-in-chief during the war, one general said: 'She's perfectly splendid, she's wonderful she's a soldier! If she was made Quartermaster-General, she'd work it, she'd run the whole Army, and she'd never get flustered, never make a mistake. The woman's a genius'. A contributor to the Sydney Morning Herald in 1914 referred to her as a 'slight, delicately-organised woman' with 'an absolutely wonderful gift for concentrated work, and a power of organisation that has made her invaluable in army hospital work'. After the war, McCarthy worked as matron-in-chief, Territorial Army Nursing Service, from 1920 until her retirement in 1925. Dame Maud McCarthy died at her home at Chelsea, London, on 1 April 1949. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 01.01.2022 I didn’t write this - but WOW does it speak to my heart!!! Worth the read. Barely the day started and... it's already six in the evening. Barely arrived on Mon...day and it's already Friday. ... and the month is already over. ... and the year is almost over. ... and already 40, 50 or 60 years of our lives have passed. ... and we realize that we lost our parents, friends. and we realize it's too late to go back... So... Let's try, despite everything, to enjoy the remaining time... Let's keep looking for activities that we like... Let's put some color in our grey... Let's smile at the little things in life that put balm in our hearts. And despite everything, we must continue to enjoy with serenity this time we have left. Let's try to eliminate the afters... I'm doing it after... I'll say after... I'll think about it after... We leave everything for later like after is ours. Because what we don't understand is that: Afterwards, the coffee gets cold... afterwards, priorities change... Afterwards, the charm is broken... afterwards, health passes... Afterwards, the kids grow up... Afterwards parents get old... Afterwards, promises are forgotten... afterwards, the day becomes the night... afterwards life ends... And then it's often too late.... So... Let's leave nothing for later... Because still waiting see you later, we can lose the best moments, the best experiences, best friends, the best family... The day is today... The moment is now... We are no longer at the age where we can afford to postpone what needs to be done right away. So let's see if you have time to read this message and then share it. Or maybe you'll leave it for "later"...
