22.01.2022 Festivals festivals! I just had a great time recording this event with my lovely scientist colleagues from the Charles Perkins Centre, Professors Steve Simpson and David Raubenheimer, about their book EAT LIKE THE ANIMALS, about science and art, and how we need to look to the natural world and collaborations between science and the humanities for solutions to our present terrifying problems. This session is streamed lunchtime on Friday 14 August and these guys are GREAT so definitely nab a ticket and listen to what they have to say ...

20.01.2022 This is a beautiful podcast series by my friend Tegan Bennett Daylight, author of The Details. Here we talk about my love for Joan London, especially her novel THE GOOD PARENTS.

18.01.2022 I'm away from my bigger bookshelves at home right now, so this is a tiny sample of the many, many Americans I love and respect. I'm thinking of you today, America, and sending love and peace and hope.

18.01.2022 We will! Book in, come along. It's going to be great.

18.01.2022 Looking for your next "beach" read? The New York Times Books Review recommends the "surprising and irreverent" SAD JANET by Lucie Britsch and THE WEEKEND by Charlotte Wood, who "has an eye for the little moments that link us." Read the full reviews now:

16.01.2022 More events! On Sunday afternoon at 3pm I'm in conversation online with Tegan Bennett Daylight and Nicole Abadee about reading - how and why and what we read. What does it do for us anyway? This is a pay-what-you-can event (from $5) - click the pic to book ( sorry it looks wonky!)

15.01.2022 The excellent Melissa Lucashenko on fire in a new anthology about this wild time, edited by Sophie Cunningham.

13.01.2022 Really enjoyed this chat with Lisa Tschernkowitsch at WCBS New York, about The Weekend.

13.01.2022 More events! I can't wait for this - talking to the fabulous Laura Dalrymple and Grant Hilliard about regenerative agriculture and sustainable food systems, hosted by Better Read Than Dead in August. This book will give you hope (plus, excellent recipes!).

13.01.2022 Important message!

12.01.2022 Hello everyone, this book is rich, funny, savage as hell about beach & surf culture and middle-aged while male delusion ... love to see you when Malcolm and I talk about it online 30 Sept.

12.01.2022 OK NSW writers, just a few days left to apply for this amazing residency in Byron, September. You get a week with me AND $10 GRAND for future professional development for your group. If Covid changes the rules for residencies we have a backup plan. There's so little generosity to the arts going round, this program feels astonishing so come on, get on it! Applications close MONDAY.

11.01.2022 And two days later, on 16 August, I'm miraculously in Melbourne for the digital MWF, talking reading with Nicole Abadee and Tegan Bennett Daylight. Another beautiful rich conversation about the things that really matter.

11.01.2022 Really excited to be hosting this conversation with Sigrid Nunez, award-winning author of 'The Friend', about her new novel, 'What Are You Going Through'. Nunez is a stellar writer, the new book is just as provocative, intriguing and thoughtful as her previous works, and I'm thrilled to be talking with her for the American Writers' Museum in Chicago. The event is via Zoom on Sept 24 Central Time in the US/Canada (Sept 25 morning in Australia). You can register at the link below.

08.01.2022 Big day - US publication of The Weekend with the wonderful Riverhead Books!

07.01.2022 I so enjoyed speaking with the great Sigrid Nunez yesterday for the American Writers' Museum. The interview is now online if you'd like to watch it - Sigrid is warm, intelligent, insightful.

06.01.2022 The struggle is real (thanks @stephaniecliffordsmith for the heads up about this serious condition) @baronessvonsketch

05.01.2022 I have an essay in The Guardian today about what growing up Catholic has done for my writing.

05.01.2022 Hello everyone - just letting you know about what I think is a fantastic opportunity for a NSW-based writer's group. Create NSW has funded a one-week retreat at Byron Bay for an existing writing group of up to four experienced writers, from Sept 7-13 2020, to be led by me. The week will focus on new creativity strategies that I discovered during my phD and will offer morning and evening group discussions, daily exercises, intensive writing time and one private consultation wi...th me for each writer about whatever challenges they are facing in their work. Best of all there is offered further funding for professional development of the successful group once the retreat is over. BUT the application turnaround time is short: you need to have applications in by July 27. Please please apply! We need loads of great applications to make this retreat a huge success. DETAILS AT THIS LINK - please spread the word among your writing communities. See more

05.01.2022 But before that, join me and the wonderful Kate Mildenhall as we launch her fantastic new literary thriller THE MOTHER FAULT via Zoom tomorrow night at Readings! We'll be talking about the novel and her writing process, and popping some champagne to celebrate its arrival. Please join us!

04.01.2022 And a reminder about this event, tomorrow night Thursday 13th! Free, online, 6.30, what's not to love? Grant and Laura know everything about how our food is produced and the environmental and ethical implications. Their book is full of fantastic meat recipes but also full of HOPE and inspiration for the way forward in regenerative farming. I can't wait to chat with them.

04.01.2022 Absolutely thrilled for Tara June Winch on her Miles Franklin win - sending all love and congratulations to Tara in France. I hope she's celebrating hugely on this much-deserved win.
