25.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why pets need anaesthesia for dentistry? There are several reasons. Firstly, we can’t reason with your pet to tell them it will all be over shortly, so keeping them calm, still and awake while using ultrasonic scalers and polishers in their mouth would be terribly difficult. Secondly, general anaesthesia is preferred to sedation. Not only does it allow the airways to be kept clear and avoid aspiration but, most importantly, it keeps your pet stress-free and pain-free.
25.01.2022 Pickles decided he wanted to be a rodeo rider ! no long dogs were harmed in the filming of this video! We all know elves are filled with pixie dust which weighs.....well nothing
23.01.2022 The mare’s vaccination and worming should be up to date and scheduled to happen again around 2 months prior to foaling. Vaccinations should include Hendra virus and 2-in-1 (tetanus and strangles) it is safe to use in pregnant mares and as well as protecting the horses, vaccination will also protect you and your vet if intervention is required at foaling time. Subscribe to our Foaling Season advice newsletter and you will go into the draw to win a Super Strength Mesh Combo Horse Rug, worth $219.99! Visit https://cutt.ly/WfmPube
23.01.2022 If you notice your dog shaking their head, scratching their ears or giving off a bad odour from their ears, they might be suffering from an ear condition. Infections, allergies, parasites and foreign bodies can all cause ear irritation in pets, so it’s important to have your pet examined to determine what treatment may be needed. Give us a call today to keep your pet comfortable and their ears healthy.
23.01.2022 Like you, we’re happiest when your pet is healthy, which is why we recommend regular vet visits, even if your pet isn’t sick. For young animals, we recommend annual check-ups. Pets more than eight years old are best seen every six months. Regular vet visits allow us to identify common insidious issues such as dental disease, arthritis, lumps and heart murmurs. This helps us to treat any developing problems as early as possible to ensure the best quality of life for your pet.
23.01.2022 To keep our cats and dogs healthy, their diet ideally requires a balance of wet and dry pet food, to ensure they receive all of the essential vitamins and minerals that our pets need. Just by chewing and crunching their biscuits, our pets are keeping their teeth clean and reducing their plaque build-up. For tips on occasional treats beneficial to healthy teeth, speak with us today.
22.01.2022 If you need to transport your cat to the vet or for boarding, it’s important to always use a pet carrier, so that the cat remains safe and contained. To create a more relaxing experience for your cat, you can familiarise them with the pet carrier prior to travel and use a calming cat pheromone spray inside the carrier. Speak with our friendly team for more advice on how to make transporting your cat a positive experience for all.
21.01.2022 Older cats and dogs can make the best pets but that also means they require a little additional care to keep them comfy, mobile and in good health throughout their twilight years. A regular senior vet check-up is a great way for us to assess your pet’s condition and quality of life. There, we can discuss any tests, preventative treatments or ongoing management that might be needed to ensure your furry family member can stay happy and healthy. Book your pet in for a senior check-up with one of our friendly vets today.

19.01.2022 It can be tempting to feed your furry friend food leftovers but dogs can actually develop pancreatitis if they eat a rich or fatty meal, such as fat gristle, bone marrow or other fatty foods. Pancreatitis involves inflammation of the pancreas, which is a gland in the abdomen involved in the digestion of food. Symptoms of pancreatitis can include vomiting, loss of appetite and a painful abdomen. If your pet is showing any of these signs, have them checked by one of our friendly vets as soon as possible.
18.01.2022 If you’ve got your holidays booked and you’re planning to put your pets into boarding whilst you’re away, you need to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with their vaccinations prior to boarding. Canine cough is a common respiratory disease seen in dogs, and can be especially prevalent in situations when dogs are stressed or anxious. Make sure to book your pet in with us for their vaccinations well before you plan to head away.
18.01.2022 If you’re looking for a new way to keep your pooch fit, happy and stimulated, then maybe dog agility is just the activity for them. Whilst some breeds of dogs are better suited to agility, you can always give it a try with your pup to see if they enjoy it first. There are dog agility clubs that offer training and competitions, or try setting up your own agility course!
17.01.2022 Kitten and puppy diets are formulated to meet the nutritional requirements for healthy growth, as they have higher levels of protein, fat and balanced calcium/phosphorous. Given the rapid weight gain in puppies and kittens, it’s understandable that they need higher levels of nutrients. Cats and small-to-medium dogs can be transferred to a regular adult food by 12 months old. Larger breeds should remain on a puppy diet until 18-24 months old.
17.01.2022 Is your cat up-to-date with their vaccines? After their kitten vaccination course is complete, any cats that go outdoors, travelling or into boarding are recommended to be kept current with the F3 vaccine, as a minimum. This requires annual vaccination, although not all components will need to be boosted every year. If you live in a high-risk area, we may also recommend that your cat is vaccinated against additional diseases, such as feline leukaemia virus or chlamydia. Keep your cat protected!

17.01.2022 Although the arrival of spring hopefully also means the arrival of warmer weather, pets with arthritis will still require management into the warmer months and beyond. 17.01.2022 Imagine your pet in the wild. What would they eat? Tough and chewy foods that require ripping, tearing and chomping. These are exactly the kinds of foods your pet should still eat in their regular diet to help keep their teeth clean naturally. To ensure your pet’s teeth are in tip-top shape, we are giving away a free dental health goodie bag with every dental consultation. Ends 30 November 2020. 17.01.2022 Did you know that undesexed female pets can: - Suffer from infection or cancer of the uterus. - Go into heat (fertility periods) regularly, requiring protection against unplanned pregnancy. - Suffer from false pregnancy.... Whereas undesexed male pets can: - Get testicular cancers. - Be more likely to show problem urine marking behaviours. - Be more likely to roam. - Be more likely to show territorial aggressive behaviours. Undesexed pets also incur higher council registration fees. If you’re not planning to breed from your pet, we recommend getting them desexed. Call us today for more information.

14.01.2022 Horses can be bred by live cover or artificial insemination with fresh semen, chilled semen or frozen semen. Each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, we are experienced with each different method and can talk you through what best suits your situation. Often the most important factor is choosing a stallion. Once you have chosen a stallion the method of breeding may be narrowed down to one or two options. We also work with local stallion owners and are involved in semen collection and processing. Subscribe to our Foaling Season advice newsletter and you will go into the draw to win a Super Strength Mesh Combo Horse Rug, worth $219.99! Visit https://cutt.ly/WfmPube
14.01.2022 There is a reason we all love watching puppies and kittens play. Play is a universal sign in most animal species that an animal is happy and secure. Lambs and calves chase each other, cockatoos often swing upside down on power lines, tigers will ‘hunt’ leaves and kangaroo joeys play by hopping around their mum. We love happy pets, so tell us, how does your pet like to play?
14.01.2022 For most pets, routine ear cleaning isn’t required we recommend only cleaning your pet’s ears if they are waxy. Unnecessary cleaning can moisten and irritate ears and make them more prone to infections. When cleaning, it’s best to use a gentle, non-irritating ear cleaner feel free to ask us for a recommendation. If you’re unsure of a safe cleaning technique, check out the video Cleaning A Dog’s Ears Veterinary Training, or ask our friendly team for a demo!

12.01.2022 Love them or leave them, magpies are an iconic Australian bird. When nesting, magpies swoop their perceived threats to protect their young. Smart enough to distinguish friend from foe, magpies may even extend their trust to you by taking some feed. Although it’s not recommended to feed wildlife, if you do, find a natural source like mealworms from a pet store, as mince and other human foods are not balanced enough for our feathered friends.
12.01.2022 To help support you this breeding season, we have put together a short newsletter series featuring tips, videos and advice from our veterinarians on all stages of foaling - from preparing your mare to breed, right through to ways of ensuring your newborn foal thrives. 12.01.2022 It’s often the quieter times at night when you might notice your pup chewing at their paws. This usually means their paws are itchy and inflamed, which is commonly caused by allergies, and generally heightened by springtime. If you notice your pup licking their paws, irritating their ears or developing any areas of redness, inflammation or rashes, contact us today so we can assess and treat your pooch’s itch.
11.01.2022 When plaque and calculus (tartar) build-up, your pet’s gums can easily become infected. The bacteria from this infection can travel through the bloodstream and lead to the heart, which can cause heart disease. Common signs include: weight loss or laboured breathing for cats, and coughing or bodily weakness for dogs. If you’re unsure about your pet’s dental health, book them in today. To ensure your pet’s teeth are in tip-top shape, we are giving away a free dental health goodie bag with every dental consultation. Ends 30 November 2020. Book now at tablelandvet.com.au to ensure you do not miss out.
11.01.2022 A mare’s pregnancy is typically described as being around 340 days. However, there is a wide range and anywhere from 320-370 days is normal. Typically a mare will have a similar length pregnancy for each foal, so if a mare foals earlyat 330 days each time, she’s not really foaling early 330 days is normal for her! And remember, before worrying that your mare is overdue, make sure you have an accurate service date for the correct mare! Subscribe to our Foaling Season advice newsletter and you will go into the draw to win a Super Strength Mesh Combo Horse Rug, worth $219.99! Visit https://cutt.ly/WfmPube
11.01.2022 Have you noticed your pet weeing a wee bit more? A common reason for this is cystitis, which refers to an inflammation or infection of the bladder. Cystitis can be an irritating and painful condition, causing pets to urinate more often with blood even sometimes noticed in their urine. It’s crucial that you bring your pet in for a vet examination, so that diagnostic tests can be performed and treatment can begin to get your pet back to being their happy and comfortable selves.
10.01.2022 Installing a cat scratching post inside your home can be a great way to encourage cats to scratch without ruining your favourite furniture. Scratching posts come in all manner of shapes and sizes - you can even build your own. Scratching behaviour is normal in cats, so providing them with one or more scratching posts will help save your furniture and keep kitty happy.
08.01.2022 Exercising pets during the heat of the day can result in heat stress and other injuries, such as burnt paw pads. During warmer weather, it can be a good idea to exercise your dog during the cool of the early morning or later in the evening. You can also exercise your pet on grassed areas to ensure they’re protected from the heat of pavements or roads. Always ensure your pet also has access to fresh drinking water after exercise to prevent dehydration.
08.01.2022 Does your dog go for walks, into boarding, grooming or daycare? If so, it’s recommended they’re kept up-to-date with the C3 vaccine against the potentially deadly parvovirus, distemper, infectious hepatitis and ideally against kennel cough as well. C3 boosters last three years, but kennel cough still requires annual vaccination (which is a great opportunity for a health check). If you live in a high-risk area, we may also advise that your dog receives additional leptospirosis vaccination. Ask our vets if you’re unsure of the protection your dog requires.
07.01.2022 Before offering your pet any festive foods, check first that it doesn’t contain any of these potentially toxic ingredients: - Raisins, sultanas or grapes - Onions or garlic - Chocolate, cacao or caffeine - Xylitol sweetener... - Macadamia nuts Avoid giving your pet any cooked bones to gnaw on (they can put them at high risk of gut obstruction or injury), or fatty foods such as leftover ham (which can trigger pancreatitis in some animals). If you think your pet may have accidentally eaten any of these ingredients, bring your pet in to see us immediately. See more
07.01.2022 Dental disease is one of the most painful and common conditions in pets and affects roughly 8 out of 10 pets. The disease can be irreversible and the bacteria created can travel to the kidneys, liver and heart. Lift your pet’s lip to inspect for dental disease. Look out for yellow teeth, redness of gums and stinky breath. To ensure your pet’s teeth are in tip-top shape, we are giving away a free dental health goodie bag with every dental consultation. Ends 30 November 2020. Book now at tablelandvet.com.au to ensure you do not miss out.

Signs and symptoms -lethargy -vomiting -diarrhoea -bloody stools -drooling -inappetence Puppies are not considered to be fully vaccinated until 2 weeks after they have had their 16 week vaccinations. 06.01.2022 Most mares will start cycling in spring although 20% of mares cycle continuously throughout the year. Mares that have foaled will come into season around 7 days after foaling (the foal heat) and typically ovulate 10 days after foaling. This may be a good time to breed your mare but this is best assessed on a case by case basis in discussion with your vet. After that, the mare will come into season approximately every 21-22 days. Subscribe to our Foaling Season advice newsletter and you will go into the draw to win a Super Strength Mesh Combo Horse Rug, worth $219.99! Visit https://cutt.ly/WfmPube
06.01.2022 Draw number 1! Congratulations Rhonda !!
06.01.2022 When was the last time you gave your pet’s mouth a check-up? Even minor dental disease can increase the risk of kidney, heart disease and other whole-body problems. Signs of dental disease include: bad breath, stained teeth, drooling, facial swelling, difficulty eating and pain when touching the lips or face. If your pet hasn’t been in for a mouth check-up lately, call us to make an appointment today.

05.01.2022 Today on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, we will be holding a minute silence to recognise and thank those soldiers and animals who died fighting to protect our country.
03.01.2022 As the weather warms up, it’s a critical reminder to never leave your dog inside your car dogs die in hot cars. As the temperature inside a car quickly rises, pets left inside can quickly succumb to potentially fatal heat stress. Do not risk your dog’s life in a hot car instead, leave your dog at home with shade, shelter and access to fresh water.
03.01.2022 Regular dental care is a vital part of good horse husbandry, and just like people, all horses should have a complete dental examination performed at least once a year. As a prey animal, horses are very good at hiding any sort of dental pain, so you won’t necessarily know that anything is wrong until the severe. Our vets have a wealth of equine dentistry knowledge and can come to you for consultations. We have safe facilities to undertake dental examinations for horses both in-clinic and mobile. Plus until 30 November 2020, we are giving away a free faecal egg count as part of every dental consultation. So if it has been a while since we last looked inside your horse’s mouth, make a booking today at tablelandvet.com.au.
02.01.2022 Does every animal with kidney disease need a prescription renal diet? Animals diagnosed with kidney disease very early on may be managed initially with an omega-3 supplement, measures to maintain hydration (e.g. wet food diet) and regular check-ups, including blood tests. Animals with moderate-to-high level kidney disease will generally benefit from the reduced phosphorous, protein and salt levels of a prescription diet, which will reduce kidney workload and slow the progression of symptoms. If your pet won’t eat a prescription diet, chat to our team for further advice.
01.01.2022 It’s important to always ensure your pets have access to fresh drinking water. During warmer weather, pets can quickly become dehydrated, which can lead to heat stress and can be fatal. It is a good idea to provide multiple water bowls in case one gets knocked over, and place them in a shady or protected spot so the water stays cool on a hot day.
