23.01.2022 This month the Chatabout team are celebrating ‘Feel Good Feb’ During this climate it is more important than ever to continue to lift the positive vibe of our community and promote good deeds and random acts of kindness. This week at the Kemps Creek clinic, the ladies have brightened up the clinic with an assortment of plants. Seeing greenery and nature in the clinic will help others feel more relaxed and calm, which in turn is reported to lower anxiety and stress, benefiting your every day mood.

22.01.2022 Happy Speech Pathology week! This week at Chatabout we are celebrating by promoting 'Communicating with Confidence'! Communication is a basic human right and it's not as easy for many individuals to 'Communicate with Confidence', as it might be for you and I! Speech pathologists work to ensure everyone can communicate with confidence. ... It is important to know: - 1.2 million Australian live with communication disabilities - A communication disability is largely invisible. Often unseen and out of sight. - Communication is more than just speech - More confident communication helps maximise educational, health and social outcomes. If you are interested in finding out more about speech pathology, read more at www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au

22.01.2022 Resource of the month! All Aboard! Trains and Speech & Language Development As a speech pathologist and a mum, I am consistently looking for ways to encourage speech and... language development through play. One toy that I especially love to use is a train track set! Using trains to encourage and support a child’s speech and language development is a great addition to therapy sessions. Plus its super fun! During train play, I target: - Eye contact - Joint attention - Turn taking - Requesting - Labelling (vocabulary) - Basic concepts - Sentence length (MLU), - Questioning skills - Following directions, - Sequencing - Problem solving - Colour and shape identification - Speech sounds (articulation) The first thing I do is grab the box with the trains and track and we begin by taking turns to pull each item out and name it. We also chat about its shape, colour, use etc. Next we assemble the tracks. The exact way I will do this will depend on the child’s current level of functioning, language skills, and goals. Generally, I have the child request the items they need to start building the track. This is a great opportunity to work on eye contact and attention and requesting skills. If I was working on an articulation (speech) goal, I may use the set pieces as reinforces for correct responses. Occasionally I use photo cards of the track set pieces for a matching activity also. Further, the photos can be used for grammar, vocabulary and MLU goals. Having the child choose a photo (requesting) using descriptive words (adjectives) and using correct grammar and sentence construction skills its a great way to target multiple goals in the one task. Once the track is built, the child and I will place the different items around it. This generally includes, trees, people, animals, signs and houses/buildings. Sometimes I include a farm animal set to include animal vocabulary. Towards the end of the activity, I allow some time (a few minutes) to just play with the set as a reward. I use this time for modelling language and new vocabulary or articulation goals that I may target in future sessions.

13.01.2022 RESOURCE OF THE MONTH: My all time favourite book to use with my little ones within shared reading is ‘Where is the Green Sheep? This is a wonderful, colourful and exciting book, which puts you in pursuit of the mysterious green sheep. This book delightfully teaches and expands young children’s vocabulary in relation to colours (e.g. red sheep), prepositions (e.g. up sheep, down sheep) and simple word opposites (e.g. scared sheep and brave sheep). This interactive boo...k is also excellent in encouraging young children to ask to simple ‘wh’ questions (e.g. ‘Where is the green sheep?) and respond with either pointing, Here! or responding with prepositional phrases such as in front of the table for your older children. Are there any books that your children love that you would like ideas on how to use? Feel free to let us know and we can help you out!

11.01.2022 Good luck to the children starting school this week and next week!! Extra cuddles for the kids starting kindergarten and year 7!

11.01.2022 As we wind down with only a few days left before our holiday shutdown, many of our families have one final therapy session for the year. We request that anyone who has been to the Northern Beaches or to any of the identified hotspots in the last two weeks, please contact us to cancel your session or reschedule to telehealth. We truly appreciate everyone’s efforts to keep our community healthy and safe in this holiday season. Kind regards,... Chatabout See more

10.01.2022 Anita’s resource of the month Mr Potato Head This is a great resource to teach young children about different body parts (e.g. eyes, nose, hands), colours (e.g. blue, red), and pronouns (e.g. he, she, his, her). I also like to use the potatoes to teach prepositions (e.g. on, under). ... A great activity idea is to hide the potato pieces around the room and get your child to look for them and then tell you where they found them (e.g. The nose is under the table). Kids of all ages love playing with Mr and Mrs Potato Heads

06.01.2022 Riddle of the week! Can anyone guess this tricky one?

01.01.2022 Appreciation post! This year marks 15 years since Leanne started Chatabout Speech Pathology in a small office above West Ryde train station. It has been 13 years since she hired Skye and they developed a lifelong friendship that has involved working together, travelling together and bringing up children together. The last 18 months, we have faced and embraced more change than ever before. We undertook the daunting task of NDIS certification and verification in order to cont...inue providing the best services we could to our many NDIS families. We relocated our Campsie office to the brand new space at Canterbury (with much better parking!) and at the same time rebranded our look and logo. We completed the much needed refurbishment of our Casula office and we have begun the process of expanding our team to include occupational therapy. We continued to be able to offer support throughout Covid-19 by embracing telehealth and adapting to all the new ways of planning and delievering therapy to our kids. We have been so thankful to our wonderful children and families who have adjusted to this new way of life and are doing their part to keep everyone safe and healthy. Through it all, we have also been so proud of our incredibly positive, passionate and committed therapists and admin team. We can't thank each of you enough and feel privileged to be working alongside you all during these crazy times. We have many more plans up our sleeves and look forward to sharing the journey with you all! Leanne and Skye
