12.01.2022 Thank you all for your support in getting the rice dumplings. Some have asked about the significant of these dumplings, and whats the origin. Rice dumplings (Zongzi) are traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet from the kingdom of Chu. Known for his patriotism, Qu Yuan tried unsuccessfully to warn his king and countrymen against the ...expansionism of their neighbors in Qin State. When Qin general Bai Qi took Yingdu, the capital of Chu State in 278 BC, Qu Yuans grief was so intense that he drowned himself in the Miluo River after penning the Lament for Ying. According to legend, packets of rice were thrown into the river by the people to prevent the fish from eating the poets body. While the rice dumplings used to the food for Dragon Boat Festival (which is just around the corner - on 25 June 2020), we can find rice dumplings almost all year round these days. The way to make it (cook the fillings and wrap it with bamboo leaves) has now become part of the culture. Not many people know how to make rice dumplings these days - and also, its hard to find a delicious one... The good news is that we still have these rice dumplings at the temple for sale. If you didnt manage to get them last weekend, make sure you pick them up this weekend (pls call 9410 0387 to pre-order; Covidsafe restrictions apply)
