09.01.2022 Anyone for a Cab? That is a Hansom Cab - a horse-drawn carriage designed and patented in 1834 by Joseph Hansom, an architect from York in England. The driver here is Horace James O'Rourke waiting patiently outside of the Chatswood Railway Station for a fare in the early 1920s. In the background is the Railway Hotel that later, with alterations, became the Chatswood Hotel and finally the Orchard Tavern. 08.01.2022 #WindBackWednesday The Haven Amphitheatre in Castlecrag, 1993 The Haven Amphitheatre was established by Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin in the early 1930s in Castlehaven Reserve a foreshore reserve including a scenic gully of native vegetation with tree fern canopy and large sandstone outcrops. It was the setting for Carols by Candlelight on Christmas Eve 2009. The packed out theatre listened to The Savoy Singers, the Haven Orchestra conducted by Prue Gibbs... and performances by 6 local children’s groups. The ‘Spectacular’ was organised by the Committee of Management of the Haven Amphitheatre and supported by Willoughby City Council, Castlecrag Progress Association and Walter Burley Griffin Society. 02.01.2022 #Windbackwednesday Palms on Archer Street, Chatswood, 1938 Palms were fashionable in the 1920-1930s as part of street beautification. Notice the freshly laid footpath and the neat bungalows. During the 1930s as part of the Depression, Relief Work Project funding was given by the state government to provide work for infrastructure such as roads and footpaths. Assuming the photograph was taken looking west along Archer Street any suggestions for the side street would be appreciated. The postcard is part of the picture collection at Willoughby City Library.
