25.01.2022 These timers are great, get in quick while they are free! I use the real life version in the clinic and also have the digital version on my iPad. It helps children visually see how long they have left on a task or to support them to stay on task for a specified time. They are also good for children who don’t have a good concept of time as it asssits them to see visually if it’s a small section of red left or a larger section of red to stay at a task.

25.01.2022 Not all communication is speech. Around 1.2 million Australians have communication disability. Though, communication disability is largely invisible. Unseen an...d out-of-sight. Thats why during Speech Pathology Week (23-29 August), we strive to raise awareness of communication disability and the important work speech pathologists do to ensure every Australian is communicating with confidence. This short video highlights some of the many and varied ways Australians communicate. www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au/spw2020 #SPweek #SpeakUp4CommRights #WeSpeechies #SLPeeps #slp2B

22.01.2022 One mini ottoman sitting waiting for the big ottomans to arrive this Friday for the waiting room. A waiting room that sadly at the moment will not be utilised due to social distancing.

21.01.2022 Happy Speech Pathology Week! I love being a Speechie and watching my clients grow in confidence as their skills improve. This may be that they understand more, they can express themselves and be heard, they have improved social skills, others can understand that they say or that talk more smoothly without stuttering. Seeing the improvement and confidence my clients gain is why I do what I do every day.

21.01.2022 Loved this show

21.01.2022 Ever tried to do accent and do it really badly? Even if we are speaking the same language, what is it thats different in the way we produce words?

20.01.2022 You might not realise this, but masks have made it especially hard for the Deaf community to read people during COVID. Expression Australia have kindly given us some basic Auslan signs we all should learn

20.01.2022 This is a good insight into the role Soeech Pathologists are playing with recovering COVID-19 patients. Many issues post ICU that the community dont realise we are trained to treat.

19.01.2022 Goodbye to my Steps Therapy room and hello to Chatter Matters Ashwood. Thanks to the girls at Steps Therapy for welcoming me several years ago when I made the bold move to transfer from Point Cook and relocate the practice to be closer to home. You always treated me like I was a part of the Steps team and it has been great to see your practice grow. A massive thank you to my wonderful receptionist Fran, you will be sorely missed and I am more than a little jealous that Steps have you! Steps Neurological Therapy Services

15.01.2022 Some great tips and visuals in this attachment for parents who may be struggling with hair brushing, washing and cutting. This is a common difficulty for our little ones on the Autism Spectrum.

13.01.2022 Michelle at Social Thinking discusses that A writing problem is a thinking problem. To write well and to understand texts, we need to understand characters’ thoughts and feelings, intent and implied messages. Speech Pathologists can assess your child’s ability to comprehend, spell, formulate oral and written language as well as identify and develop goals regarding issues with social understanding and interaction abilities.

13.01.2022 Trying to master ways to keep the young kids engaged over Telehealth. Using Easter themed Boom Cards and sharing my iPad over Zoom for some fun whilst following instructions for part of this session.

12.01.2022 Last Telehealth session for 2020! Thanks to all of my wonderful families for a year of learning, adapting and finding ways to still achieve our goals. Your support and partnership has been truly valued and I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas. Stay well and enjoy being with friends and family.

12.01.2022 How do you communicate with someone who is deaf while wearing a face mask? We spoke with Hannah from Deaf Victoria Inc. about what life is like for Melbourne...s deaf community during Covid-19 (and even learned some new Auslan signs that have come out during the pandemic). This interview also coincides with National Week of Deaf People See more

10.01.2022 Last week of sessions begun this morning and we had some very strange things on our plane today. We were working on asking WH questions and we had our lovely stingray puppet assistant to help us too. Maybe we all need a pretend plane that we can board right now!

09.01.2022 This Speech Pathology Week, Speech Pathology Australia are asking everyone to pay it forward and help spread awareness about speech pathology, what speech patho...logists do and how they help. Communication disabilities may be in the form of reading, speaking, listening or understanding language, and speech pathologists work in several different ways to help their clients to maximize their potential. Remember to communicate with confidence and pay it forward! #speechpathologyaustralia #spweek See more

09.01.2022 So with 2 adults and 3 kids working from home/ home schooling I need to be creative. Like my desk?? Need some quiet for Zoom sessions so the kitchen table just wasnt going to cut it!

09.01.2022 RADLD - Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder #DLD awareness day is here! Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects approximately two children in every classroom. #DLDSeeMe #SLCN

09.01.2022 This is something that has been an interesting social experiment for me. Certainly those social smiles whilst walking are gone. I have found that wearing a mask does tend to make me disconnect more when out and about. I wore sunnies too yesterday and it added another level of disconnection. Daryl offers some good advice in this article on how to communicate with the mask on. I feel it does take more of an effort. Also, those that we are encountering when out and about may be stressed, anxious or having a hard time. Dont let the social distancing and masks stop us from the little human connections that can make a difference in someones day. Smile with your eyes!

08.01.2022 Well its been a crazy year so far on so many levels. I embarked on this new clinic fit out and then COVID-19 hit just prior to me ending my lease at Steps. I decided to forge ahead anyway with the long term vision that I will have a calm and lovely space for my gorgeous clients to visit. In the meantime, I have been embracing Telehealth which has actually been fulfilling and worked a lot better than I had initially anticipated. A huge part of its success has been the fabulou...s parents that have supported their children and me as we continue to aim for their speech, language and social communication goals. For me the challenge has been trying to find novel ways to keep the kids engaged and motivated to participate in the sessions. Thanks to AKI Interior Design; Charis your input was invaluable. I cant wait until I can use this space and share it with the families that visit Chatter Matters. See more

07.01.2022 On Stuttering Awareness Day (22/10) get behind the ‘Find the Right Words’ campaign that aims to change public perceptions & start a new conversation about stuttering. It’s a global campaign to tackle the harmful language that surrounds stuttering. #ASEA https://bit.ly/3jjghgd

06.01.2022 Speech Pathology Australia supports Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day on Friday 16 October because more light needs to be shed on a hidden condition... that affects on average two children in every classroom. DLD is a condition that causes difficulties with speech, language understanding, communication, and reading (with an associated high risk of dyslexia). Developmental Language Disorder is now the accepted term for language difficulties where the language disorder has no other differentiating or influencing condition (e.g. the absence of Autism, Down Syndrome, Fragile X, etc.). The term DLD describes children who are likely to have a language problem that endures into middle childhood and beyond; without diagnosis and specialist support this condition has a significant impact on their everyday social interactions and schooling. If you are concerned a child you know has DLD, contact a speech pathologist. Find a speech pathologist via the Speech Pathology Australia website.> https://bit.ly/3k4PNjx

05.01.2022 At 26, Michaels dream in life is to become a husband, and hes so determined to reach this goal he has a pair of love ducks that sit on his bedside table at hi...s home in Wollongong where he lives with his family. In this conversation, Michael and his mum Vanessa talk about everything from love in lockdown to why finding a partner is so important to him. See more

05.01.2022 I have had the pleasure of working in many schools in Australia and the UK. I have worked inclusively using a whole school approach including whole class team teaching and lesson planning consultation for staff. When Speech Pathologists work collaboratively with teachers, this benefits many students in the school who are not directly accessing Speech Pathology services.

05.01.2022 What should a child be doing with their communication by 2 years? Quite a lot! Remember that understanding is just as important as speaking.

04.01.2022 This video shows some of what we are experiencing as therapists engaging clients over Telehealth.

04.01.2022 Shout out to all those amazing Allied Heath Specialists, all the terrific Speech Paths and my Allied Health colleagues today. It has certainly been a different challenge this year, adapting to different service delivery models and supporting clients as they have faced unprecedented challenges with work, family and personally. I feel that our work is more important than ever and I am so grateful for my work and for all of my clients who have embraced this new normal.

04.01.2022 I am still doing lots of Telehealth in the clinic, mixed with some face to face sessions at the new rooms in Ashwood. Sarah Wright, from Sarah Wright Psychology, is also joining me in the clinic to consult on Tuesdays which I am super excited about.

04.01.2022 Part time role for an experienced Speech Pathologist at Chatter Matters! Check out Seek for further details

03.01.2022 Well it’s certainly not a party here in the clinic today as Telehealth sessions continue. However, I’m keeping positive and chocolate always helps! I have purchased these to share with the Psychologist who shares the rooms here with me, but won’t be in this week due to lockdown. Well Sarah, hopefully lockdown doesn’t last too long as they won’t last long if I’m here alone!

02.01.2022 Comment of the day yesterday: I was praising a 13 year old client on his amazing progress and how well developed his conversation skills were now. He then said, Well this may sound corny, but I’ve learnt from the best!

01.01.2022 How do you teach new words to a toddler? Teaching vocabulary is more than just speaking to children. Here are some great tips for engaging your young child and developing their language.

As the winner, Kirrie Ballard is required to provide an article for Speak Out about her innovation and to provide a short presentation to the Speech Pathology Australia National Conference in Darwin in 2021.
