24.01.2022 Some great phonics resources....

24.01.2022 School holidays are here in Victoria and if youve got children with sensory concerns then make sure you have a look at the following site for Sensory Friendly Films screening over the holidays. http://ow.ly/KIhmU

23.01.2022 Its a busy time of year for families. School, kinder and outside of school activities are winding up, often with parties or special things. Add to this get togethers with family and friends and suddenly routines are out the window, bed times are pushed back later and day time sleeps are missed all together. Despite all the fun and excitement it can be tiring for adults and exhausting for little people, and exhausted children can be difficult to manage. Theyre more prone to... not listening, more emotional, more likely to tantrum and for some kids more likely to lash out physically because theyre too tired to respond any other way. If in this busy time of year, you find your children responding in the ways mentioned above, it may be time to have some down time and a quiet day/evening at home. Its hard to say no to all the invitations, but missing one or two things might make all the rest a much more pleasant time for you and your kids.

23.01.2022 Have you seen Royal Childrens Hospital blog by Dr Margie? She has lots of interesting topics that she covers on her blog. http://blogs.rch.org.au/drmargie/about/

22.01.2022 Attended a professional development session on iPad Apps for children with Autism and other developmental delays yesterday. Feeling very excited about a host of new possibilities for therapy activities and not just for kids with Autism, Down Syndrome, Fragile X etc, but lots of the apps can be applied to all kids accessing speech therapy services! :D

21.01.2022 Play School are running an episode explaining why we can’t leave the house this afternoon at 4pm for those with kids who might be interested!

16.01.2022 Have you seen Royal Children's Hospital blog by Dr Margie? She has lots of interesting topics that she covers on her blog. http://blogs.rch.org.au/drmargie/about/

15.01.2022 Music is a great way to have fun and encourage a range of developmental areas for your child. Instruments can be as easy to find as pots and wooden spoons from your cupboard (drums), drink bottles filled with rice or pasta etc (maracas) or you can get a tambourine etc from your local $2 or toy shop. Let your child experiment with playing instruments loudly, softly, fast, slow, quickly and slowly and talk about what these things mean. Or get up and have a dance, a great form of exercise for all involved!

15.01.2022 Its school holiday time, have you checked out your local library to see what special holiday activities they have happening to entertain the kids for a few hours? Or why not pop in and borrow some books? Sharing books is vital for literacy development as well as for speech and language development as well. Which books are your kids loving at the moment?

14.01.2022 This is one to keep the kids moving. My kids joined in this morning and had a great time, particularly my youngest who is missing her gymnastics classes!

13.01.2022 If you have a child who has speech and language difficulties, sensory difficulties or problems with their hearing, its vital that their teacher/s and school are informed about those difficulties so that things can be put in place to help manage this. I regularly hear from parents whose children are in open-plan classrooms and are struggling because of the noise levels.

13.01.2022 And another one...

12.01.2022 Reading regularly to your child is a great way of spending time together. As an added bonus it encourages not only the development of their literacy skills but also their attention, listening and communication skills!

11.01.2022 Looking for something to keep the kids occupied for a few hours, how about using some sheets over the kitchen table or couches to make a cave. Fill it with some books, a couple of pillows and maybe a favourite toy and let the fun begin...

10.01.2022 These are great Aussie Decodable readers, some families will have seen me using these in the clinic!

10.01.2022 It isnt every parents idea of fun but most kids LOVE messy play! Messy play can involve sand, water, clay, paint, shaving cream, play dough anything that gets kids use to the feel of different textures and sensations on their hands. For kids who dont like messy play, encourage them to have a go by getting your own hands dirty and offering them the chance to clean up straight away but dont force the issue, you may find they like some types of messy play and not others.

09.01.2022 If you have a soccer fan in your house... Even if you don’t another way of keeping the kids active!

02.01.2022 Does your local library host a story time for children during the week? Story times are great for keeping little people occupied, introducing them to other children, new stories and giving Mum and Dad a chance to meet other parents in the local area. Lots of story times also include a craft activity or sing-a-long time as well!
