24.01.2022 Monitor your kids social media use for the next few days or give them a social media break while the platforms get on top of removing and getting rid of this confronting and inappropriate content.

24.01.2022 As we are fast approaching the beginning of the 2020 school year I share this for all of my amazing teacher friends and colleagues who are good at focussing on what really matters.... The Kids!!

24.01.2022 There is no past and no future; no one has ever entered those two imaginary kingdoms. There is only the present. Tolstoy. Dont miss the magic ordinary moments full of opportunity for quality trying to strive for perfection or an ideal. BE WITH your kids in the moments between moments.

23.01.2022 Mr Rogers has such good and sound advice for managing those big feelings like mad and angry.

23.01.2022 I havent seen the movie yet, but am looking forward to it.

19.01.2022 Theres a good article weve shared on our Blossomtree Psychology page about ways to support kids given our current national bushfire crisis. I encourage you all to head over there and have a look at it as Im not going to share it here. Instead here Im going to share the words and mantra of a family who lost their home in the NSW fires on New Years Eve. These guys were caught in the fire as they tried to flee with their kids and while they and their pets got out, they came... back to their home burnt and our hearts broke for them. While travelling back to find the remains of their home Dan said the following to his kids and wife and my heart was full as a Child Psychologist and Id encourage others to use Dan and Kates incredible words as ways to centre, ground and remind yourselves and your children of what matters. At the end of the day being alive and having each other is enough. The rest, while painful to lose, is just stuff. So what are these wise words that left me inspired and filled my heart such that I thought the rest of the world should know about them, use them and apply them at all times but especially at times like this. I heard Dan say to his wife and kids.... Who are we? In unison they said... their Surname. Where are we? In unison they said... Together What do we have? In unison they said... The Future. What a beautiful way to ground themselves in what matters, in the power of their relationship, of their connection and that will always afford the scaffold for the future. Thanks Dan and Kate for being incredible parents, down right awesome humans and for being the co-regulation your kids have needed during this unimaginably difficult and heartbreaking time. My heart and thoughts are with you guys... The McMaths. Photo taken from Facebook photographer unknown to me but all credit to them.

14.01.2022 As Mums, Dads and carers embark on a term of homeschooling remember first and foremost you are parents. If I have any advice for you all keep a routine and try and separate home time and school time. Dont be afraid to teach life skills and count that as learning time. ... If you step into a role of teacher for some of the day, help your child understand and navigate that - they know you in a different role. They know you as a parent and they will struggle to get you as their teacher. Always reconnect with your child in the parent child relationship at the end of learning time. If it doesnt work or its all too much for you or your child dont sweat, dont stress. Youre a parent first, lean on and reach out to your schools for the educational/teaching support for your kids. For your kids sake please dont let the stress of homeschooling in anyway impact your relationship with them as their parent/caregiver. So go easy on yourself and above all else stay true to who you are - their parent.

13.01.2022 This latest Dan Siegel and Tina Payne-Bryson parenting book is HOT off the press. Those who know me, know how much I LOVE their work and I cant wait to get into this book. Stay tuned for insights and snippets. The title of this one is so consistent with what I teach parents and what I believe scaffolds kids into all their potential.

13.01.2022 Oh my goodness yes. At Christmas I spent a lot of time talking to clients about presence over presents. Being with and being present in the interaction with your children is so vital to their emotional development. I love the work of Dan Siegel and Tina Payne-Bryson

10.01.2022 A must watch featuring Bruce Perry talking about the brain and how to assist all young people to learn and thrive in school

08.01.2022 Theres going to be plenty of time later to talk about the what ifs, the what should haves and the where to from here. Right now our country is burning, people are dying, while others are hurting in the most unimaginable ways, our wildlife and livestock are dying. Theres lots to be angry about for sure, but now is the time to stay focussed on the matter at hand... honouring and supporting the brave men and women out there trying to put out the fires that are ravaging our co...untry, the families desperately trying to save their homes and livelihood and supporting those who hurt and are injured. Therell be time for finger pointing and politics later. If you want to help there are so many ways to donate financially or if needed practically - find the cause/donation stream that aligns with you and give generously. OUR HEROES WEAR YELLOW AND ORANGE. AND BRAVELY FACE THE UNIMAGINABLE DANGER OF OPEN FLAMES AND EMBERS. Heres to our firefighters - our everyday heroes. Assorted images from Facebook. Credit to those who took them.

03.01.2022 I was just talking about this today.... repeatedly This is why being with and developing an emotionally safe and trusted therapeutic alliance for the client is imperative, therapeutic and thus treatment.

02.01.2022 Heres an update on Telehealth at Blossomtree in light of the easing of restrictions.

01.01.2022 Hey kids check this out.

01.01.2022 This series, Managing In The Midst of The Current Outbreak, comes to an end. This series came together quickly and unexpectedly, as did news of everything that...s been going on! As Ive talked about before, when things started getting serious with the virus and talk of it spreading was all over the news, I started to become very anxious. Im already an anxious type, but this was a bit more intense. My wife was continuing to go to work, fortunately, (though now with a growing concern that shes going to be infected), I continued to work at home, but now I was suddenly joined by my two kiddos (ages 4 and 11!). Crazy!!! As someone who enjoyed reading the news, I was now becoming very anxious with all the numbers and tallies and imminent threat of sickness, and trying to manage my kids at home while also trying to keep my business goingI realized that if this continued, if I continued like this--that I was going to go nuts. So, I just slowed down. I stopped reading the news as much and I said to myself, Okay, what can I do (my inspiration was Leo Buscaglia), what can I control, what can I do to take care of myself and my family, and how can I model for my kids during this time. This became my purpose. This shift helped me a lot. Its not easy. Its not perfect. I still have experienced waves of anxiety day to day, and continually have to remind myself of what I can do and whats important to me. Creating something like this series was also something that I could do, that I love to do, and that I could sink my teeth into, in a sense. And reaching out to others in a time like this is also helpful to me. My hope is that it would offer some help or guidance or inspiration. I hope you have enjoyed it.
