25.01.2022 Hand Washing! For the last few weeks, we have been focusing on hand washing with our toddlers in the Possum room. Today we read our special hand washing book, then demonstrated hand washing using blue paint mixed with soap for the children to wash all the colour away and see that their hands are clean whilst we sung our hand washing song.
24.01.2022 Give children some simple tools and they will create their own play experiences! They will imitate what they know about the world around them through building castles and houses, using wood chips for cement. They will repurpose the tools as they play at being a hairdresser for the day. They will experiment with new ways to use the blocks such as creating large 3D structures that represent the sun, and scientific experiments exploring motion as they position a block at different angles, rolling items downwards. Children are natural learners, armed with their imaginations and interest in the world around them, they are all set up to learn, create and explore using simple materials that can be found around our homes.
24.01.2022 SEASONAL JOY: Autumn Children love to explore the outdoor environment in all weathers and seasons. Each season and weather event presents itself with new discoveries and adventure for the children. With each opportunity it is wonderful to experience the awe, wonder and joy expressed by the children as they gaze upon the outdoors in a new way, with new passion and enthusiasm. This week with the wetter and colder weather the children have been jumping in puddles, dancing in the... drizzle, collecting water from inside the tyres, and discovering the changes occurring such as the change in the colour of the leaves. The children have discovered rain drops collected upon leaves and have dug beneath the wood chips to discover how it is wet on top but dry beneath. The children are inquisitive and have communicated why and how these things are occurring. The children have collected autumn leaves to make crowns and necklaces, to dress themselves as the trees have for autumn, to become a King or Princess of Autumn. They collected their favourite leaves, learned to use a hole punch and threaded their leaves onto their own ribbon, before they were adorned with their Autumn decoration.

22.01.2022 The Wombat children had so much fun experiencing goop play this week. They were very keen to explore it, putting their hands in to feel it and grabbing handfuls and watching it drip onto the table. Goop is a great way for children to experiment with cause and effect, as they touch the goop, move it around and see it come back together when they push their hands through it. They also develop and strengthen their fine motor skills by manipulating and handling the goop.
22.01.2022 Last week, we made some peach cupcakes in the Possum Room! Using tinned peaches and cake mix, we created some yummy cupcakes for morning tea. The children were eager to mix the batter, using their gross motor skills they mixed the ingredients until ready,... Then using their hand eye coordination, the possums scooped the batter with their spoon and filled the patty cake. After the cupcakes were ready, the possums helped mix the icing adding some red food colouring to go with our Red theme this week. The children then carefully sprinkled on some hundred and thousands to create their beautiful cupcake. The possums are extending on their gross motor, communication and social skills as they work in a group to complete the task.
21.01.2022 'We're Going on a Bear hunt' The children went on another bear hunt today but we had a real bear to look for today. It was so much fun acting out the story and the children had so much fun.
21.01.2022 Possum Room! To extend on last weeks sensory experience with the goop we made soap foam with dishwashing liquid and water! The possums mixed colours through the foam, extending on our colour recognition. They explored the textures as they told me it felt "slimy" "soft" and "cold" using all 5 of the sense to learn through play. ( Piaget's Theory)
20.01.2022 Dinosaur Small World Play! 19.01.2022 Kangaroo Room Colour recognition is an important step in cognitive development for children. It helps to develop descriptive language, being able to recognise colours and offers children the experience to explore their imaginations when beginning to mix colours together . In the Kangaroo room, we have been exploring colours, specifically colours of the rainbow. This has allowed us to develop fine motor skills while making a rainbow as well as learning how to sign the colou...rs in sign language. Children were provided with a large rainbow to decorate as a group, to develop social interactions as well as small rainbow to explore individual imaginations. Colours can be bright and eye catching which can lead the children in a world of wonder! See more
19.01.2022 Possum Room Today we explored colours and texture, extending on the Possums sensory skills. Sensory play allows children to gain confidence and involvement in learning using all five of their senses. This experience can be linked to Piagets theory. Children need to be able to see, touch, taste, smell, move and hear the things they are learning about which is called concrete learning.
17.01.2022 Since we cant go camping at the moment we had our own camp out at preschool today. Everyone was very excited as we have been talking about camping and have had camping set up outdoors for dramatic play for the last week. The children told us what they wanted for our camp out and asked for a fire to cook sausages and marshmallows so we discussed fire safety with the children and talked about what we would need for our camp out. Some of the children wanted to bring something from home and brought in their camping chairs. It really felt like we went camping and was so much fun.
16.01.2022 Were all about Nature play! Today the children saw an opportunity to explore their environment, extending their social and gross motor skills they happily jumped in the puddles, all seeing who could jump the highest and make the biggest splash! *Remember to pack spare clothes for spontaneous occasions like today!
16.01.2022 Yesterday we adventured down to the oval to participate in a sports carnival. Children from all ages joined in on games and activities such as egg and spoon races, jumping sack races, tug-a-war and parachute games. We were very lucky to have some of the high school children and prep class join us from Maitland Christian school. All the children had such a great day!

14.01.2022 The Possum children have been exploring cooking in their dramatic play and have been using the wooden bread and food to make dinner and more specifically sandwiches. So to extend on their interests we gave the children the opportunity to make their own sandwiches. They were very excited and loved being able to choose what they wanted on their own sandwich, buttering the bread and making it all by themselves. They have built on their fine motor and self-help skills using the knife to butter the bread and cut their sandwiches and they did a great job.
13.01.2022 We did some painting with shapes and rollers today to give the children an alternative way to express being creative and to practice our shapes. Involving shapes into activities such as painting is great way for children to identify the difference between the shapes and name them as they print onto the page next to each other. It also helps develop cognitive, fine motor and language skills.
12.01.2022 Possum Room Yesterday the Possum children learned about worms, composting and gardening. Sheena bought in some worms to put into our compost bin, the children showed great interest and curiosity as Sheena discussed the process of composting. The children then had a turn at feeding the worms once in the bucket.... Gardening experiences allow children to foster a respect for the environment and a natural curiosity in nature, enhancing their own happiness and wellbeing. See more
11.01.2022 This week we have been spending the days outside, soaking up some fresh sunshine! We have been creating with collage, paint and even getting messy with clay as well as playing games, climbing on the equipment and having our lunch outside too!
11.01.2022 We did some fruit and veggie tasting for a different type of sensory experience. The children were given a bit of everything to see what they would like to taste. Most of the children only tasted what they knew and liked but others explored everything. Allowing the children to experience things through taste helps them to build on their sensory skills. Using food as a sensory experience is also a great way to get children to taste different foods and promote healthy eating.

11.01.2022 Today in the Possum Room, we experimented with textures, colour exploration and cause and effect as well as engaging in our sensory skills. The possum's expressed their ideas and wonder as the goop turned from a liquid to a solid when they put pressure from their hands and fingers. This sparked a lot of open ended questions extending on the children's curiosity as they moved the colours through the goop, mixing the colours to create new colours as well as a rainbow effect which they all seemed to be very excited about! They manipulated the goop for over an hour as they established their concrete learning ( Piaget's theory)
10.01.2022 Something for the kids to watch during the week.
10.01.2022 The Kookaburra and Kangaroo children have been exploring colours. During our M&M experiments the children noticed colours in the rainbow that formed which were different from the colours of the chocolates on the plate. This started the children asking questions about this. We looked more closely at the colours on the plate and where this new colour had appeared. Together we decided to experiment with paints to see if the colours we identified as possible mixers were correct. ... This has led to much investigation and experimentation including exploring tones after repeating our M&M experiment using milk. They noticed pink in the rainbow and asked where it had come from. This led to experimenting with adding white and then black to our colours. The green colour below was created by the children to use on their green tree frog picture, which was inspired by our classroom tadpoles and frogs. See more
10.01.2022 Were Going on a Bear hunt The children went on another bear hunt today but we had a real bear to look for today. It was so much fun acting out the story and the children had so much fun.

06.01.2022 The Possum, Kangaroo and Kookaburra rooms went for a bush walk today. It was so much fun exploring and finding different places to go. We walked up to the bridge where the children waved to the traffic and the cars and trucks beeped their horns at the children, which made them very excited. Taking the children out on bush walks is a great way for the children to explore nature and get out into the community.
05.01.2022 In the Kookaburra room we have been busy engaging in cooking experiences through creating our own recipes. Last week we followed one of our Kookaburras friends recipes and created our very own sausage roll pie. We followed the recipe ensuring each step was completed. First we cut the sausages into small pieces to fill the inside of the pie. Our friends used their safety skills by ensuring they held the knife properly and kept their fingers away from the blade. Once the base w...as full, we placed the lid on top ready to be cooked. To follow a child's idea helps them to build confidence as a learner and it encourages them to use their voice in sharing their ideas and feelings. Throughout this experience the children developed their knowledge on how our food is made. They were also able to build on their independence skills as they were encouraged to participate in real life experiences, like using a knife to cut up the food. Cutting food strengthens a child's fine motor control and strength in a fun and engaging way. The children felt a sense of accomplishment as they enjoyed the final product of the recipe for lunch. It was very yummy! See more

And best of all, it is fun! See more
04.01.2022 The children in the Kookaburra and Kangaroo Rooms have been enjoying building with boxes and recycled materials. One day last week some of the boys built boats and they asked us, "Will they float?" We provided the children a container of water and let them test their designs. This has led to most of the children in these two rooms exploring recycled materials and asking questions about their designs. We have heard questions such as "Why does my boat sink?" "What can we use that wont get soggy?" Through testing the children have discovered that plastic and foil covered boxes float better than cardboard which eventually becomes soggy or fills with water and then sinks. One of our children discovered that blowing against their boat made it move forwards across the container.
03.01.2022 Bush kinder is always the highlight of our week! Unfortunately due to covid we haven't been on as many adventures as we would like. Recently, we have started getting back into the swing of adventuring out into our community. Below we have captured some highlights. Bush kinder is a great way for children to further challenge themselves physically as well as using their problem solving skills. The children enjoy exploring their physical environment, seeing wonder and awe in the things we often miss. They recognise the changes that take place in the environment and use them as a way to engage in play.
03.01.2022 Thank you to The Costume Shoppe at east maitland for renting us a very cool bear costume. It made a bear hunt very exciting.
03.01.2022 Wombat Room: Painting with the babies is always a great sensory experience. They love painting and using their hands to experiment with it, finding out how it feels and what they can do with it. Its a great way for them to express themselves artistically and have fun getting messy.
