25.01.2022 Hey there, Sadly we are seeing more and more disposable masks discarded on our streets and beaches. Here is an interesting overview of the environmental impact of disposable face masks AND some food for thought regarding how we manage our reusable masks. https://theconversation.com/coronavirus-face-masks-an-envir

24.01.2022 I’ve spent as much of the morning as I can picking up rubbish from Chelsea beach after a big beach day yesterday. It was wonderful to see others making a contribution to the clean up too. I send a MASSIVE thanks to you! It’s okay to feel outraged and disappointed by the mess that visitors leave behind. Many people stopped to chat with me, and shared their concerns for the beach. What are you going to do about it? I agree that something needs to be done - so let’s start by picking up a few things, as much as you are willing, each time you see that something needs to be done. The bigger picture also needs addressing, it’s true. And from these photos I’d think a container deposit scheme would be an excellent first step. But in the meantime we can all do our bit - it all counts.

23.01.2022 To all our fabulous volunteers out there, we just wanted to check in and make sure you're doing ok? We miss our regular catchups to clean our beaches and streets but most of all we miss seeing familiar friendly faces and can't wait to see you all again. We know many of you have been picking up litter while out on a walk to get some much needed air and exercise. Thank you so much for that. If you do continue to collect litter on your walks, please do wear gloves and be safe and if you're inclined, download the Litter Stopper App so you can upload information about the cleaning you've done. The data is important and valuable. Thanks again, stay healthy and connected. http://litterstopper.com/index.html

21.01.2022 Here's an interesting clip about what we might find whilst beach-combing - apart from rubbish! It explains a bit more about the Moon Snail, responsible for the round jellies we find on Chelsea beach seasonally.

20.01.2022 Hello everyone! My name is Jenny and I have volunteered as the new Group Leader of 3196 Beach Patrol. Hooray!! As you may be aware, Beach Patrol are not doing any group cleans during Covid-19, but with any luck we will be back on the beach before we know it. ... In the meantime, volunteers can to do their own cleans whilst complying with current Government restrictions. Remember: - gloves/tongs and thorough hand-washing afterwards - use the Litter Stopper app to log your efforts - share some pics to our page, we'd love to see them! Stay safe and I look forward to getting to know you all.

19.01.2022 We Chelsea Beach!

18.01.2022 40,000 littered bottles and cans removed

18.01.2022 BeachPatrol strongly urges the state government to bring in this very necessary regulation.

17.01.2022 There will be no beach clean this month as it is the school holiday and I am away unfortunately. Feel free to do your own clean...but remember to record it on the 'litter stopper' app

17.01.2022 It’s not warm

15.01.2022 Keep our thoughts on the long term picture

14.01.2022 Are you ready to join #SpringCleanYourPatch TOMORROW Sunday 18th October? People all around Victoria will be heading out to spring clean the beach or neighbourhood for 1 hour between 9am-12noon. What to do: ... 1. Gather your bags, safety gear, personal protective equipment, and anything else you’ll need, and head out into your neighbourhood for an hour between 9am-12noon. 2. Download the Litter Stopper app from an app store 3. Log the collected rubbish information in the app 4. Share your experience and the waste you’ve collected on Instagram and Facebook and include hashtags #springcleanyourpatch #stopsingleuseplastics

14.01.2022 This is great news in the fight to get plastics out of our waterways and Port Phillip Bay, though a little confronting to think that scenes like this are so close to home.

13.01.2022 Unlike summertime when the bigger litter on the beach grabs our attention (abandoned inflatables, broken umbrellas, roast chook bags, bottles, cans etc.), this time of year we can put more focus on smaller plastics. I picked up this handful on my walk this morning... It is so easy to make a contribution and pick up a few things each day.

13.01.2022 CHELSEA BEACH NEEDS YOUR HELP! Following bumper crowds at the beach on Cup Day and a really disappointing rubbish service today (ie. the bins have still not been emptied as at 7.15pm Wednesday), Chelsea beach and the surrounding streets, nature strips and Victory Park are swamped in rubbish. Please please please don't just tut tut and place blame (however tempting that can be) - there is time for that later. What we need is the rubbish cleaned up ASAP before it hits our gutte...rs, drains and the bay. If you have 5 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour to spare it will all make a difference. I hope to see council empty the bins in the morning, and we could probably fill them again with the rubbish that the wind has gotten hold of. Why should we do it? Because we our beach, our bay and our amazing neighbourhood. Let's see what we can do for beautiful Chelsea beach!

12.01.2022 Great news - we can now get our Chelsea Beach Patrol volunteers together for group cleaning on the beach! We will start on January 31st - though keep an eye out for a last minute call-out for help if we have some big beach-going days in the meantime. I'm really looking forward to meeting you!

12.01.2022 What on earth are we going to do with all these cigarette butts? Maybe the answer is in our road network... An RMIT study of recycling cigarette butts in bitumen suggests that around 150 Tons of cigarette butts could be recycled in a sustainable way to construct a typical 100 km strip of a two-lane roadway. Amazing! http://buttoutaustralia.com.au/butt-out-recycling/

11.01.2022 We will be at Chelsea Beach this Sunday. 9 to 9.30am start for an hour. On the beach by the Yacht club off Kelvin Grove. Hope to see you then...if someone could bring some warm weather that would be great

09.01.2022 Let’s start by picking up at least 3 things on every walk and putting them in the bin where they belong... Easy!

08.01.2022 Surf’s up this morning!

08.01.2022 A new Group Leader is sought for our Chelsea group. Be seen as a leader in your community and become part of the very successful BeachPatrol group. Being a leader involves 5-6 hour per month to run the group. All training provided. Contact [email protected] for more information

08.01.2022 Next clean is this Sunday at Bonbeach, 9 to 9.30 on the sand next to the Williams Grove carpark. This will be my last clean as manager but I’m sure someone will step up and take over so watch this space. After 5 years of managing 3196 it’s just time to have a break.

07.01.2022 Reports of Blue Bottle jellyfish all along the 3196 beach so take care. Watch your dogs too.

06.01.2022 Come out and clean your patch this Spring.

06.01.2022 Feeling good after spending an hour spring cleaning Chelsea Beach as part of today's "Spring Clean Your Patch" event. We collected approximately 7kgs of soft plastics, bottles, cans, takeaway containers, cigarette butts, bottle tops and more. It wasn't hard work and was a great excuse to get out onto the beach for some beautiful fresh sea air. If anyone else got out to do some spring cleaning on the beach today, please don't forget to log your effort on the Litter Stopper ap...p and share your photos - we'd love to see them! #springcleanyourpatch

05.01.2022 There will be NO beach patrol clean tomorrow. Sorry everyone. If you still want to go down why not download the litter stopper app and you can log any clean any time.

05.01.2022 The sand is getting a spruce up this morning. It’s always so nice to walk on afterwards.

04.01.2022 Here’s a fantastic piece of research that highlights how far some litter travels before finding its way into the bay. Perhaps if people better understand how litter travels it will motivate everyone to put there rubbish in the bin.

03.01.2022 Did you know that you can enjoy your holidays, be generous, indulge yourself and also protect the bay? Our fifth tip for a #bayfriendlyholiday is to take your... rubbish home with you when at the beach or public reserves. With so many people visiting our lovely beaches, public bins can overflow quickly. If you keep adding rubbish to these bins, the more likely your rubbish will become litter and enter our bays. Help manage rubbish at these sites by taking yours home! #bayfriendlyholidays #portphillipbay
