16.01.2022 The fight by Arm Bowlers to have Medical Certification retained as a pre requisite to access an Arm Device goes into the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission on Monday 17 th June when a further case will be put to Bowls Australia requesting a rethink and reversal of the clearly discriminatory policy blunder they have introduced in May . There can be no doubt that this is bureaucracy gone mad . The Bowlers Arm was created by Trevor Harker specifically to kee...p a mate in bowling and his device and others since developed have been extremely successful in keeping now about 14000 plus people with all manner of ailments involved and over half of these are in Victoria. Clearly a fully fit player who accessed an Arm device should have an advantage over a person with arthritic hands who cannot hold a bowl in their hands but can have a measure of control with a device, or a person with balance issues who accesses a device so they no longer risk falling when bending over . The only reason a fully fit person would use an Arm Device is to get a benefit over other players . Bowls Australia have an internal paper that claims no advantage therefor open slather . Clearly the advantage of an Arm Device is the bowler is upright and can see their line much easier but this is balanced by their disability and the fact that they need to master a device . The Arm players have developed Arm Player events across Australia and these are used in all States to identify players that might be proficient enough to trial for State Side Selection . The term State Side means in the case of Qld, NSW, SA, WA and Tas means players selected by the Associations that operate outside Bowls Australia’s State affiliate bodies however Bowls Victoria do recognise and financially support their Arm Side . The National Bowlers Arm Sides Championship for Medically approved arm players has been grown progressively over the past 8 years by Arm Players in every State not the Administrators who seek to alter the regulations which if not corrected will over time effectively phase out medical certification and create an competition where fully able players would have an advantage over Restricted arm players who have a medical reason / need for using an arm . That is plain and simple Discrimination and should not be allowed or fostered by a National Sports Body like Bowls Australia . Let’s hope that Bowls Australia come to the table on 17th June prepared to seriously reconsider this Policy blunder and reverse it before it’s too late. Phil Gude . See more
