18.01.2022 The painstaking work of #ChemCentre forensic scientists over more than a decade and their crucial contribution in assisting Western Australia Police Force in the administration of justice in Western Australia, was highlighted in the recent trial of the Claremont serial killer. #ChemCentre's Physical Evidence team is continuing to develop the world-leading fibres database which has attracted international attention. The database currently contains more than 20,000 fibres and c...ontinues to expand. The custom-built database and search program allows the entire fibres collection to be sorted into groups based on fibre type, digital images and UV-visible absorption spectra. Evidence recovered from crime scenes can then be compared with those in the database to assist in criminal investigations. Find out more about Forensic Science at ChemCentre www.chemcentre.wa.gov.au

10.01.2022 #funfactfriday The purple hue used in #ChemCentre branding is called tyrian purple - also known as royal purple. The dye was extracted from the glands of thousands of putrefied crushed Murex shellfish. According to the historian B. Caseau, "10,000 shellfish would produce 1 gram of dyestuff, and that would only dye the hem of a garment in a deep colour". These numbers are supported by the quantity of discarded shells which, at the ancient seaport of Sidon (known today as Lebanon) for example, created a mountain 40 metres high. Such figures also explain why the dye was worth more than its weight in gold. Tyrian purple is known as the first commercially-produced dye.
