18.01.2022 Glyphosate residue could reach humans and animals through feed and excreted in urine. Presence of glyphosate in urine and its accumulation in animal tissues is ...alarming even at low concentrations. Unknown impacts of glyphosate on human and animal health warrants further investigations of glyphosate residues in vertebrates and other non-target organisms. See more

03.01.2022 More good ideas for weed control in organics farming.
03.01.2022 We have a great farm on the Sunshine Coast in QLD. The farm is 141ha with adequate water for stock and crops. The location is readily accessible to a large popu...lation. Kilkivan is 50km North West of Gympie, on the northern end of Queenslands Sunshine Coast. The farm itself is 2.5km out of Kilkivan. This place went from dairy to beef/horses in 2005. By 2009, the steel frame sheds and the new house went in and the place completely re-fenced. The farmers plan is to put the farm, Kumbartcho, at Kilkivan into community ownership. With the explosion/impressive growth worldwide of farmers markets/local food networks, I feel the time is right. With the "cost" of agricultural land far exceeding the production capability, it is right-on impossible for young people who are passionate about food production/agriculture to buy land and expect to achieve production returns to pay for it. 01.01.2022 Demand for organic food prompts Woolworths to launch $30 million fund. BOOMING demand for organic food has prompted one of Australias biggest supermarkets to offer $30 million in incentives to fruit and vegetable farmers to either convert to the pesticide and herbicide-free method of production, or scale-up their current organic businesses. Woolworths supermarkets managing director Claire Peters said the supermarket has witnessed huge growth in the organic produce sector, wh...ich has grown at a rate of 20 per cent year-on-year over the past five years. Theres no doubt more Australian customers are choosing to buy organic and are seeking fruit and vegetables that are the product of the best of what Australias natural farming resources have to offer, Ms Peters said. To meet demand, the company has launched a $30 million Woolworths Organic Growth Fund in partnership with Heritage Bank that will offer conventional and organic fruit and vegetable farmers grants and interest-free loans over the next five years to either begin organic farming or grow their existing organic production. With the assistance of the funds, interest free loans and grants, we can help farmers adopt innovative approaches that will enable the range of organic fruit and vegetables on offer to grow, making it more readily available and affordable for customers, Ms Peters said. The loans can be used for land acquisition, new fruit and vegetable varieties, facilities and equipment and must be repaid within three years. Initially the funding will only be available to organic fruit and vegetable farmers who have been trading for at least two years, who can apply for up to $500,000. Applicants do not have to be existing Woolworths suppliers; however, funding may be conditional on signing an exclusive supply arrangement. Organic vegetable farmer David Tatman, who farmers near Ballarat, said the lure of interest-free loans and grants wasnt enough to convert him to supplying Woolworths, but agreed demand for his produce was booming. He currently sells at 14 farmers markets across the state. Its climbing every year. More and more people wont go near conventional fruit and vegetables anymore, Im assuming for health reasons and an effort to be more environmentally aware, Mr Tatman said. The Organic Growth Fund was announced on Monday night, amid concerns over the supermarkets drought-relief milk initiative. In an effort to assist drought-affected dairy farmers, Woolworths has added a 10 cents a litre levy on its two- and three-litre own-brand milk cartons. However, the levy attached to milk sold in Victoria and produced by Fonterra suppliers is being handed to a small handful of Parmalat dairy farmers in NSW, Queensland and northern Victoria.
