23.01.2022 The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC, has just announced the names of the last four elements of the 7th period of the Periodic Table. They are on public view until November 8, so if you have any objections now is the time.... They are (drum role): Nihonium and symbol Nh, for the element 113, Moscovium and symbol Mc, for the element 115, Tennessine and symbol Ts, for the element 117, and Oganesson and symbol Og, for the element 118. For the super nerds, note that the name of 117 ends in ine, because it is a halogen, and 118 ends in on because it is a noble gas. This means of course that we will need to update over cover picture once again :-( http://iupac.org//names-and-symbols-of-the-elements-with-/

22.01.2022 An intentionally set fire caused the massive ammonium nitrate explosion that we commented on back in May 2013. The explosion killed 15 people and injured hundreds more in West, Texas. Federal officials said investigators determined the fire was started on purpose after they conducted more than 400 interviews and analyzed evidence at the blast site along with witness photos and videos

18.01.2022 All good alchemists know that Lewis acids and Lewis bases tend to pair up just like Brønsted acids and bases. However, unlike the Brønsted case, there is no proton to swap so it is possible to keep the Lewis base and Lewis acid close, but not close enough to react. This is called "frustrated Lewis pair" and this skeptical Chymist has been following this field for some time. Légaré et al. (Laval University, Canada) now extend this reactivity to the cleavage of carbon-hydroge...n bonds in heteroaromatic compounds such as furans and pyrroles. Their frustrated Lewis pair complex catalyzed borylation of these compounds by bringing the reactive acid and base close to the reactive centre. This is, in fact, how many enzymes work - by bringing a general Brønsted acid and base in close proximity, held apart by the structure of the protein. http://www.sciencemag.org/content/349/6247/513 See more
