03.01.2022 Parvo education ! We have been seeing quite a few post lately alerting the public to the presence of canine parvovirus in certain areas in Wagga. We just wan...ted to clarify a few things to disband any misinformation that may be circulating Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a dog specific disease - it cannot infect any other species other than dogs, foxes, wolves - the canids. It is shed from infected dogs via vomit or diarrhoea, which results in contamination of the surround area, including soil and water. Naïve, unvaccinated dogs - most notably puppies - are at risk of contracting parvovirus Flies and other insects can act as vectors to transport the virus from one place to another. The virus can be transported via water movement from one site to another. parvo can be transported from one area to another on shoes Even dogs that stay at home all the time are at risk if unvaccinated due to fly, water and vector movement Infection can occur if an unvaccinated animal comes into direct, close contact with an infected animal. Parvovirus is an extremely stable virus and can live in the environment under the right conditions for at least 10 years. Ridding it from areas like grass and soil is virtually impossible. Parvo is endemic in Wagga Wagga and Junee. It has been long known that Wagga Wagga is a high risk area for parvovirus. Inconsistent uptake of vaccination recommendations and the long-lived nature of the virus means that our town is high risk. The virus is more active during warmer months so we seem to see a spike in cases from September to April, but do see cases year-round. Vaccination is the best course of action to prevent for the disease. Young unvaccinated puppies, puppies that have not had a full course of vaccinations, and dogs whose vaccination have lapsed, are most at risk. Puppies that have not had their full course of vaccination are still required to get out and about to expose them to the world and socialise them. Ensure that this take place in a safe environment, preferably away from water sources, grassed and soiled areas. The socialisation is REALLY important in their early weeks of life, we just need to be careful about where we take them until all their vaccinations are on board. There are some areas of town that are being indicated as hot spots. It is possible that there is a heightened amount of contamination in these areas. All areas of Wagga should be considered high risk if your animal is not up to date with vaccination, due to its known endemic status. Fully vaccinated dogs are at extremely low risk of contracting parvovirus as they will have antibodies capable of fighting off the virus that enters their body. Clinical signs of parvovirus include lethargy, inappetence, vomiting, diarrhoea. If your pet is not up to date with vaccinations we recommend consulting your veterinarian to discuss. Prevention is the best strategy!
