25.01.2022 Everybody has those moments in life that affirm or change our course. During a recent reflection I found this piece that I wrote some ten years ago, about a significant event in my life in the early 80s. I look at the work were doing now and it all makes sense. Remembering that Golden Lab and giving thanks for it all. ... Read more here: https://www.cherishedpetcare.com.au/blog/the-golden-lab

24.01.2022 RIP dear Nova. Our hearts are heavy with the recent passing of one of our favourite and original CP patients Nova. He was the centre of his family of four: Suzie, Andrew, Austin and Archer. ... Jack Russells and growing families with young sons are a wonderful match and this guy seriously had the best life. It was a life fully lived with fun, games, action and adventure. He loved his car rides and visiting his grandhumans in country Victoria. He received best care at every step. Since our early days of running pop up clinics at @wallingtonswrg, Nova has been a CP patient. We’ve seen him through aches, pains and arthritis, the itchies, pancreatitis and in recent months, seizures and advancing dementia. He liked us but he didn’t love us, and heaven help you if you tried to take his temperature. But he was stoic and cooperative through it all. As his hair faded, slowly turning white, so did his mind and in the end it was his dementia that caught up with him. He was losing his capacity to engage and enjoy his people and his world, and together we reached the very tough decision to help him move on from this life. His last day was spent as all of his life was surrounded by his humans, in a lap of love and totally honoured for the super mate that he was. Thank you to Suzie and family for giving him the best; Nova will always hold a special place in the heart of Cherished Pets. Head to stories to see Nova in his hey day.

Did you know the CP team can assist with managing chronic illnesses and support you as you navigate tricky times. Get in touch to learn more about our case management service. 22.01.2022 A Tribute to Shakti Shakti was rescued from an abusive home at four months of age. I didnt choose her, she chose me. Finding each other was the most serendipitous experience imaginable.... After hearing her story, without any thought, never having seen her I said, Ill have her. That was the beginning of 15 happy, adventurous years with my girl. The best dog anyone could wish for. She was re-christened Shakti (Indian goddess of power and strength) and she took over my life. 20.01.2022 This is a brilliant piece and a must read for all of us who cherish our dogs. Of course we want them to be happy. Training with the intent of obedience is often at odds to meeting your dogs needs and ensuring happiness. ... Let the focus shift to allowing your dog to express her natural behaviors in a positive and accepting environment while meeting her needs within our own boundaries!! Sometimes this is easier said than done but it needs to be what we aspire to. Bravo to this. Xx

19.01.2022 It’s NAIDOC week, and to celebrate we are reflecting on the human animal bond and the role of companion dogs in our Indigenous culture. This is a lovely piece from The Guardian which also highlights the amazing work of AMRRIC - Animal Management in Rural & Remote Indigenous Communities. Indigenous peoples around the world have had long cultural relationships with animals. They are part of our dreaming; our totems and their stories are embedded in our landscape. There is a l...ong cultural relationship with dogs, which dates back to the introduction of the dingo thousands of years ago. Today the dingo has been largely replaced by domestic dogs. #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

Head on over to this link for some inspiration.... And yes there’s a contribution from Cherished Pets! 18.01.2022 Best thing about offering home visits is that Moggy was able to be examined and treated while sitting in front of the wood heater. Not sure that he fully appreciated this gesture. Cool cat don’t you think?... #vetsofgeelong #homevet #catsofbellarine #moggycat #tabby #oldercat

17.01.2022 Remembering Our Cherished Pets... Mitchell came into our lives as a 5 month old bitza. They were not sure what he was, but he had just been surrendered and we just happen to be there at the right time. He was very cute and at first very quiet but as we soon found out, the devil was unleashed. Mitchell fancied plastic and rubber and completely destroyed the cat door, ate all and any plastic items and on one occasion decided he would eat the gear stick knob in our Ute. ... Mitchell was stubborn and very food driven, as we were on a farm he soon learnt how to catch rabbits, this became his obsession and eventually to his accident. He was a dog that sat at our farm gate shop and all would fall in love with him when they came. He led a charmed life here on the farm and loved riding on the 4 wheeler and utes. As he got older we thought he would slow down as he had a few health issues, but no he didnt. Mitchell loved watching TV, this could sometimes become a problem as he would become quite vocal but funny, he could spot a dog in whatever was on and start crying, as he got older and his eye sight started to fail it would be any animal on the television. We will miss him terribly and there will never be another Mitchell. Thank you so much Alicia for Mitchells final moments, her compassion and caring is amazing, not sure how we could have got through without her help. Thank you Cherished Pets, Alicia and the team. Love Renate Read more about Mitchells time with the Cherished Pets Team by following this link bit.ly/31L09OT

17.01.2022 Thank you! Weve raised $6,977 to support the cherished pets of elderly and disabled pet owners in Geelong and on the Bellarine. Wed like to give a special thanks to our two star #WalkForUs fundraising teams: Bec & Jac, and Kate from @pawtasticpawsbellarine , who have collectively raised over $900. Your generous donations will go towards our Foundations community pet program, continuing to provide emergency pet care planning, respite pet care, and subsidised veterinary care to help elderly and disabled pet owners.

17.01.2022 At our hub, we continue to provide our special veterinary services that support pets and people through all life stages despite the challenges Covid has presented. Yes it is different , with our No Contact protocols in place, as recommended by veterinary industry bodies. This means that we aim to keep humans outside, and bring our pets inside for veterinary care. This style of service is not without its challenges and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and sup...port through these times. To adapt, we have turned our waiting room in to our consulting room, which means you can watch us care for your pet through the window. We have found, particularly for the more anxious pets, that they are more comfortable being examined while looking out the window at their humans. Like dear Storm here! We follow strict Covid procedures for sanitizing and cleaning, and require all people that come to the hub to ring in advance, so that we can manage traffic. This includes if you are collecting food or prescription medicines. (Note we have discretionary exceptions to the No Contact rule. Please ask us for more information if you are not comfortable with the No Contact policy) We cannot wait for this phase to be over, when we can open our doors again and welcome you all in for hugs. In the meantime, know that we are here for you and your pets, safely and with sanitizer, social distancing and masks in place!

14.01.2022 Meet Dushka. She may look grumpy but she most certainly is not. She is the most gorgeous, friendliest kitty. Her favourite place is a lap. Anyones. Yours. Mine. Her elderly mums. From across the room she finds your lap and snuggles in, purring and dribbling all the time.... Dushkas time in this life is limited as advancing disease takes its toll. But today is a good day. Her quality of life is maintained and she is making the most of every second of lap time that she can find. We are providing home assistance to Dushka and her elderly human. Please send them love and thoughts as they navigate this profound time.

13.01.2022 Massive shout out to our incredible vet nurses on National Vet Nurses Day 2020! Vet nurses are the heart and soul of the vet industry. 11.01.2022 Remembering Billie Pictured here in her prime. What a magnificent girl she was. And so deeply loved by her humans, Zoe & Matt.... At 15 years of age the complications of ageing, arthritis and neuromuscular decline took their toll, and Billies quality of life took a turn for the worse. Together we knew it was her time. We assisted Billie on her forever journey a week ago today. At her favourite place, on the beach, wrapped in warmth and love. Zoe & Matt have shared this tribute: Rest in peace Billie. I am so proud of you, and so privileged to be part of your life. All you knew was loyalty and love. You were perfect in every way. I will dream of you every night and think if you every day. Sending love and thoughts to all those who loved her. Xx @ Cherished Pets

11.01.2022 This is Tiger. He is one of our CP originals. He is one of us. We him and we love his human. Tiger’s human has health issues and through a collaborative case management plan we are able to keep Tiger healthy and well and his human supported.... Tiger has chronic skin issues, a sensitive gut and is prone to chubbiness. #understatement Since 2016 our team has visited Tiger twice weekly 50 weeks of the year to walk him, check his ears, deliver his weight control food and bath his feet. Tiger gets so excited when he hears that his primary #communityvetnurse carer, Kym is on her way. Other features of Tiger: 1. He barks when you try to chat with his human; 2. He dislikes hot weather; 3. He loves saying AHhhh and showing you his tonsils; 4. He loves food (hence the chubby challenge); 5. He loves meeting other people and dogs; 6. He’s very strong; 7. He poos A LOT. Through our #veterinarysocialwork service the benefits of healthy pets are accessible to all people. #dogsofgeelong #dogsofbellarine #communityvet #labradorcross #blackdogsofinstagram Photos courtesy @kym betts colls Xxxx

11.01.2022 Going for a walk in the park, to the beach or around the block should be enjoyable for everyone. If we respect other people and animals when we are out walking, we can all enjoy our time outside. Whether your dog is on or off leash, they should always be under your supervision. You should always be able to see your dog and call them back to you. Train your dog to come back to you when called. If you are not sure they will come back, then keep them on leash and seek the help o...f a qualified trainer. This will help keep your dog safe. 11.01.2022 Last Sunday the world lost a very cherished pet, Marmalade. In her prime, Marmalade, a Mastiff, weighed close to 45kg. Sadly a complex illness robbed her of her health, and she declined rapidly in the days leading up to her death last Sunday. Marmalade was not your average dog. She was the companion and therapy dog for Brighdie who suffers an intellectual disability. The sudden death of Marmalade has caused incredible pain to the family. Brighdie is just learning to read and... write and she wrote this tribute for Marmalade. This tribute is the first thing Brighdie has written on her own. We share the heartbreak of this family as they come to terms with the loss of dear Marmalade. They shared with us these words and photos: Marmalade was our beautiful girl. We lost our best friend. She will always be by our side and forever in our hearts. Remembering a majestic girl, Marmalade. Sending love and healing to Brighdie, Merric and Sam.

09.01.2022 Remembering Billie part 2. Billie loved the beach. And so, at her humans request, we arranged for her last moments to be spent here.... On this gentle shore, on a calm Friday afternoon, ahead of a storm. This is the view, where Billie lay, wrapped in the warm embrace of her humans, when she took her last breaths. It was beyond perfect. Peaceful. Calm. Dignified. So. Much. Love. So many tears. The dignified passing Billie deserved. Moments to cherish. The way it can be. Love to all RIP Billie. Always remembered Xxx

09.01.2022 Cherished Pets has recently had two fine felines come into our care due to their former humans terminal illness. After spending a few weeks with the amazing team at The Cat Cave Cat Boarding, they are ready to venture on and find their new home. Nina is a lovely mild-tempered 9 year old tortoiseshell no Naughty Tortis here! She has a sweet nature and loves to chirp and squeak at you when she is happy or wants attention. She loves to play with her scratching post and spe...nds most of her day lazing about in a sunny window, like all good retired ladies should. She enjoys keeping you company whether its in the lounge watching telly, or curled up in bed with you at night. Sable is a distinguished older gentleman who can take a few days to warm up in new situations, but once he is comfortable, will show you his golden personality. Sable is 13 years young and is a couch potato he enjoys being curled up in his bed, or on the couch, or in your bed, or on the couch you get the idea! Sable and Nina have spent most of their lives together, and we would love to see them homed together. They love each other dearly and we hope we can find the perfect place for them to live out their twilight years together. Both are indoor cats, however have been enjoying spending some time in the outdoor enclosure at the Cat Cave. They would need to remain indoor cats, but if they had access to an outdoor enclosure, they would love that also. Nina and Sable are both litter trained, in good health, and have plenty of love to give to someone wanting a pair of companions. Please share this post far and wide, and send any enquiries to Georgi at [email protected]

09.01.2022 Meet Toby. He is the very cherished pet of one of our CP team members, Alyce. Toby decided to get sick late on the 23rd Dec sparking fear and concern in his human especially as we were heading into the Xmas holiday break.... Good timing Toby! However swift action on Xmas Eve saw Toby admitted to @newtown_vet_clinic where a diagnosis of pancreatitis was made and treatment began. Later Toby was transferred to the amazing team at @geelonganimalemergency for ongoing care. Toby made a good recovery and was able to be home again in time for present time on Xmas day and many cuddles from Alyce and her family. A massive shout out to emergency vets teams who hold the fort for our cherished pets while the rest of us enjoy the festivities and spend time with our families. These vet teams are super humans carrying a load and stress like no other to ensure our cherished pets can come home soon. They hold people safe during times of intense emotion, pain and loss, making hard decisions in challenging circumstances. They are the heroes in our profession and we thank them all for getting Toby and others like him home again. Toby is home, recovering well and destined to a low fat diet and no Xmas ham! @geelonganimalemergency @advancedvetcareaus

08.01.2022 Lovable, interesting, and a character were the words Mary used to describe her best four-legged friend, Bess. She doesnt mind me being tired or angry or anything, she just sits there and loves me. Before reaching out to Cherished Pets Foundation, Mary had to consider giving Bess up, I was very frustrated not being able to do for Bess what Bess needed. I had discussed the possibility of finding another home for Bess. Connecting Mary with Paul, one of our lovely volunt...eers, has meant Bess gets plenty of walks and proper training. Paul, who I could not praise anywhere near enough, for what Paul does for Bess and I. Hes indispensable. It was really important for me, making this contact with Cherished Pets, I dont know how I wouldve managed without them, theyre absolutely incredible. Through #CherishedPetsFoundation we seek to support companion pet ownership in this very special community sector. With your help we can continue to provide much needed support for our beneficiaries and their cherished pets. Engage in our services, volunteer your time, or join #WalkForUs , https://bit.ly/3dWiYCn

06.01.2022 A Letter from Our Founder: Dear Friend of CP, My mum had a favourite song, When the going gets tough, the tough get going, by Billy Ocean. She would sing and jig to this song often. It was almost her mantra song as she battled cancer. It is a catchy tune that often resounds in my head when I consider some of the challenges our community faces when it comes to keeping their pets healthy and well so that the human animal bond can flourish. It has also kept me going when I ha...Continue reading

05.01.2022 That face. This girl. My heart.... We were first asked to provide end of pet life guidance to Millie in 2017, thinking she was getting old and facing challenges. Look at her go! Yes she is frail. Yes she can be wobbly. Yes her weight has dropped. Yes she sleeps a lot. But they do not suffer when they sleep. She knows where she is. She eats, drinks, wees and poos. She wags her tail. A lot. Mentally Millie is totally on the ball. She loves her daily sniffs. She gets herself outside to do her business and she sleeps well at night. Shes here. Today. Living an enriched and mindful life. She is on a medication and management plan to ensure she is pain free, physically and mentally. Her progress is a credit to her human who has committed and adjusted to Millies changing needs. Her day will come. But its not today. And we are holding hearts, hands and paws every step of the way. We love you Millie. Xxx At Cherished Pets we offer a very special service dedicated to managing quality of life in pets through end of life phases. We are here for your pet and you. Get in touch if your cherished pet is reaching end of life. We can make a true difference through this final chapter of your time together.

05.01.2022 Saturdays are a good day for Dr Lissi to do her hospice rounds, checking in on pets and people who we are caring for through final chapters. We also do our follow up visits. Many of you knew about Tammy, who lost her struggle with cancer two weeks ago today.... A piece of our hearts broke that day too. She really was such a special girl. Today Dr Lissi popped in to catch up with Tammys human, Wendy. We shared a cuppa, cookie and stories of Tammys beautiful life. A chance to reflect and remember, and give thanks for the gift that she was. Remembering sweet Tammy. A beautiful passing and ending to a life well lived in the loving care of a beautiful family.... The whole experience from Sarah’s first call to laying dear Cordy to rest made our hearts swell. So. Much. Love. We are honored to serve pets and people through these profound moments. Xxxx
