25.01.2022 Out of the mouths of babes!

23.01.2022 Some great books to support children with emotional literacy and regulation!

22.01.2022 Our second therapy room is up and running! Its been amazing being able to expand Cherish Psychology so that both Philippa and Shareen have their own individual therapy rooms!

22.01.2022 I like using Social Mapping techniques to support children to understand that just because theyre feeling good at a certain moment in time, doesnt mean those around them are. I adapt the visuals and layout depending on age and like being able to support kids to see that how they feel at the start of an interaction may not be how they feel at the end....#socialmapping

22.01.2022 I like to use concepts from the Zones of Regulation program, as I find encouraging children to name a zone rather than a specific emotion can be useful if emotional vocabulary is an issue. Recently weve been creating Zones Posters to help us think about the feelings we may have in a zone, plus the behaviours we might display (or see in others) and what we can do to cope within the zone.

22.01.2022 This is a great stick on the fridge reminder regarding supporting kids when theyre dysregulated. Before we can tap into the logical, problem solving left hemisphere of the brain, we need to tune into the emotional right hemisphere by regulating and relating. #regulaterelatereason

21.01.2022 Working predominantly with children sees the topic of getting distracted come up a lot. Children with executive function deficits (including ASD and ADHD) can find remaining on task challenging and often find themselves in trouble for reduced engagement. Last week while discussing distractions with a client we came up with this visual for them to follow. It incorporates some of the #zonesofregulation notions (expected and unexpected behaviours; time and place) and has a foc...us on helpful language. We thought about the signals we might give (green = lets chat, the time and place is right; orange = Im interested but not right now; red = leave me alone please) and also about the fact that we might receive these signals from others. This information was shared with the class teacher in the hope they could facilitate dialogue amongst peers (e.g. did you notice _____ giving you orange signals?). See more

21.01.2022 Some great info-graphics to support understanding of ASD communication styles. These would be great to share with family members/friends/teachers who have little experience with/limited understanding of ASD.

20.01.2022 Wise words from @karenyoung_heysigmund . When children are anxious we must be careful not to inadvertently lead them into avoidance as this can be much harder to unravel further down the track.

20.01.2022 Im a big fan of the Emotion Coaching framework from @gottmaninstitute and use it not only in a profession capacity, but a personal one as well. It supports children to learn the concept that all feelings are fine, allows opportunities for connection, teaching and repair and helps with co-regulation when feelings become big.

19.01.2022 Wishing all of our families a Happy New Year!

19.01.2022 I stumbled on this article today while trawling the amazing @hey_sigmund website for inspiration and shareable information. Many of us will be dealing with first week back jitters next week, and in some instances the jitters may belong more to parents than kids! Link: https://www.heysigmund.com/beginning-of-school/

19.01.2022 Cherish Psychology is up and running with telehealth sessions for any families who require them! Want to know what a telehealth session might look like for your child? Check out our video at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZWZRY7dCHg

19.01.2022 For those who may find the holidays tricky there is support available

18.01.2022 Happened upon these fantastic visual supports for increasing emotional vocabulary from @susandavid_phd today. Modelling specific labelling of our own emotions is a great way to support our children to widen their vocabulary.

17.01.2022 As we approach the end of term 4 (), sometimes the school routines that we know and love start to change and our little people become anxious about what the next year might bring. Here are some super helpful ways to support big anxious feelings....

15.01.2022 Today we celebrate International Day of People with Disability. The theme for 2020 is not all disabilities are visible and looks to raise awareness around the notion that not all disabilities are immediately apparent. #internationaldayofpeoplewithdisability

15.01.2022 I often get asked this very question why can my child with ADHD spend hours on technology and not engage this well in other learning activities?. The article from the Child Mind Institute offers great information.

15.01.2022 Having worked with Deb from Kids Dig Food before I can vouch for her knowledge and experience in working with eating and neurodiversity. I’m sure some of our Cherish families would benefit from listening to this podcast.

13.01.2022 As the end of the school year approaches there are many nervous year 6 students thinking about their upcoming transition to high school. For some children this transition creates excitement and anticipation, for others it creates anxiety and dread. The linked article highlights some common concerns, and how we as parents can support our children to have as smooth a transition as possible into secondary education. http://kids-health.guru/transition-to-high-school/

13.01.2022 As a profession Psychologists are good at supporting others to take care of themselves during times of stress and change. But sometimes we have a tendency to forget about our own self care. A cancellation this afternoon has allowed me a stretch, a walk and an afternoon tea break; all of which I am making the most of! #selfcare #lookinginward

13.01.2022 Such a simple and timely reminder, not just for the little people on our lives but for the adults too. Adjusting to change is hard and stress reduces our capacity for tolerance. My favourite mantra at present is do the best you can with what youve got (and breathe; always breathe!)

13.01.2022 Its R U OK Day today. A great reminder to check in on our loved ones regularly to make sure theyre looking after themselves. This years focus is on how to respond and what to say if someone isnt ok #ruok @ruokday

11.01.2022 An important reminder from @ourmamavillage as we get closer to the big day! Excitement can lead to dysregulation very quickly so being an available co-regulator to our kids is super important. Merry Christmas from the Cherish Psychology team!

11.01.2022 Everyone lies - its part of life!! Lying typically starts around age 3/4 as children develop their Theory of Mind skills (being able to see things from another persons perspective). Hey Sigmund - Karen Young has put together a great overview of this developmental milestone including strategies for how to deal with lying in children and teens. https://www.heysigmund.com/when-children-lie/

08.01.2022 Movement breaks are a super important part of learning and particularly important for children learning from home at the moment. Support kids to give their brains a break from learning with some of the ideas in this article!

08.01.2022 This. We all do it - attempt to do 100000 other things while trying to listen to someone else, get so caught up in our own thoughts and message that we forget to focus on our own conversational partner or forgot to listen and validate and jump straight into fix it mode. Thanks @gottmaninstitute for the helpful reminder!

07.01.2022 Autism Queensland are running some great groups over the holidays which look to support across a range of areas. Check out what they have available on the AQ website!

04.01.2022 Starting the year with some reflection and planning! Getting kids to think about and contribute to their own goals can be a really rewarding activity that can then be referred back to over the year.

03.01.2022 Words matter. Its so easy to get into the habit of telling kids what they shouldnt do and using negative language. This info graphic has some really simple changes that have a big impact.

03.01.2022 I often talk to parents about the importance of scheduling child and me time, particularly when there are multiple siblings. Often times what appears to be attention seeking behaviours are actually connection seeking behaviours where little people are trying to refill their emotional bucket by connecting with a safe person. Scheduling time to do a one on one activity of the childs choice on a regular basis can support connections and attachment and help strengthen the parent-child relationship.

03.01.2022 Happy World Autism Day!!! Ive learnt so much about resilience, creativity and seeing things from another perspective in the work I do with ASD families. Im thankful they allow me to be part of their lives x

02.01.2022 Today is Grandparents Day! Huge thanks to all the amazing grandparents who play active roles in the lives of the children and grand children #grandparentsday2020
