23.01.2022 On Monday night Cherry Gardens CFS brigade had the amazing opportunity to receive Deaf Awareness training from the wonderful team at Deaf Can:Do. This included an introduction to deaf culture, the use of Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN) and other methods of communication, as well as learning AUSLAN that can be used in emergency situations to assist members of our community. Our brigade is incredibly thankful to everyone at Deaf Can:Do who helped provide this customised training evening. It was both an enjoyable and enlightening evening, and we now feel better equipped to help those around us who are deaf or have hearing loss.

23.01.2022 AlmondCo Fire - Pike River (Riverland) On Sunday the 6th of September firefighters were responded to a fire at the AlmondCo packing facility at Pike River, near Renmark in the riverland. Not only were a semi-trailer and a loader destroyed by fire, crews also found the very large almond husk piles alight. On Tuesday morning, the Sturt bulk water carrier (BWC) with its Compressed Air and Foam System (CAFS) capability was responded to assist local crews with protecting the rema...ining packaging facility and the extinguishment of the burning husk piles. Later the same day the remaining CAFS appliances in the CFS fleet from Eden Hills, Tea Tree Gully, and Blackwood were also requested to attend. Multiple crews were deployed from these brigades, including ours from Cherry Gardens who crew the Sturt BWC, and were on scene assisting local firefighters from first deployment on Tuesday the 8th of September through to Monday the 14th. All CFS and MFS firefighters and heavy machinery operators worked well to minimise damage to the AlmondCo facility and bring the fire under control. We are proud of the efforts of our brigades firefighters for giving up their time to deploy for multiple days to assist with this large scale commercial fire.

21.01.2022 Please follow the advice given below by the SA Country Fire Service regarding bushfire safety and evacuation during South Australia's COVID-19 lockdown.

21.01.2022 Apart, we stand together to remember those who gave everything for their country and way of life. In a year like no other, the spirit of the ANZACs brings our communities closer like nothing else. Lest we forget.

21.01.2022 Today marks the 5th anniversary of the Pinery bushfire. 2015 Pinery bushfire was a catastrophic bushfire that burned from 25 November to 2 December 2015, and pr...imarily affected the Lower Mid North and west Barossa Valley regions immediately north of Gawler in South Australia. At least 86,000 hectares (210,000 acres) of scrub and farmland in the council areas of Light, Wakefield, Clare and Gilbert Valleys, and Mallala were burned during its duration. On 25 November, during the major run of the Pinery fire, two fatalities occurred; Janet Hughes, 56, perished while fleeing in a vehicle outside Hamley Bridge; Allan Tiller, 69, perished while fighting the fire on a neighbour's property in Pinery itself. A further 90 people were hospitalized as a result of the fire, with five of the victims suffering critical injuries. The Pinery fire destroyed or rendered uninhabitable 91 houses, and completely destroyed 388 non-residential structures, 93 pieces of farm machinery and 98 other vehicles. Today we take the time to remember the 2 lives lost and their families, along with the many others who were greatly effected by the Pinery Fire. #SouthAustraliaBushfires #Pinery #PineryBushfire #CountryFireService #CFS #SACFS #CFSFoundation #CFSVolunteers #Brave #Incredible #Courageous #ThankYou

15.01.2022 We’ve changed the look and colours of our warning messages that are issued when bushfires occur. It’s important that you be aware of these changes and what they mean. There are three levels of warnings with specific actions for you to take if a bushfire is in your area.

15.01.2022 Endurance, Teamwork, Community. It's been a wild ride of a year, and as we count down the final hours we look back at everything the year has thrown at us, and what we were able to do despite the adversity. The challenges faced this year are well known. The campaign fires being fought over many weeks at both Cudlee Creek and Kangaroo Island took many brigade members away from their everyday lives, and the resulting fatigue. And of course, the impacts of Coronavirus. While o...ur regular weekly training and brigade social activities were strictly limited, members put in extra effort to make sure the brigade stayed operationally ready to respond through some of the biggest uncertainty in a generation. Several members also gave up their time for two separate fires in regional South Australia in order to assist with the Sturt Group CAFS bulk water carrier. But through the bad times, there's always the good. We were extremely lucky to take part in a Deaf Can:Do AUSLAN for emergency responders training night where members learnt basic sign language to help assist members of our deaf community in an emergency. We also completed projects around our station including a new kitchen, equipment and change room, and the installation of a weather station that can be used by all Sturt Group CFS brigades to monitor local weather and fire danger. It's been a long year with lots of challenges, and we thank our local community for standing behind us (socially distanced at 1.5m) the entire way. The brigades officers also thank our team of firefighters and operational support members for their dedication and perseverance over the past year. Their attitude and drive has been exceptional. We wish everyone a fun and safe new years eve celebration, and a prosperous new year.

15.01.2022 The SA Country Fire Service has a variety of firefighting appliances, and Cherry Gardens CFS houses one of the largest. If we needed to access your property for water supply or firefighting needs, would we fit? Prepare your property now. Visit www.cfs.sa.gov.au for more information.

As a part of the evenings proceedings, awards were handed out to several well-deserving brigade members; Firefighter of the Year: Senior Firefighter Bodie T... As voted by brigade members for exceptional service over the past year. Bodies contributions include his work as brigade OH&S officer, assisting with training new drivers in the brigade, as well as numerous deployments to large fires over the past fire season, including the Port Lincoln fire and Cudlee Creek fire. Captains Award: Firefighter David M Chosen by the captain for his hard work and dedication over the past year including his research and time spent learning the new finance reporting system and hard work during the last fire season. The "Golden Mic" award: Andrea J Awarded by the communications team leader to members of the operational support team for outstanding service over the previous year. Cherry Gardens comms team provide communications support on a rotating roster with Belair CFS comms team for the entire of Sturt group. Additionally, Firefighter Rob E was awarded the CFS Life Membership. Rob has been a member with the CFS for over 38 years, and has been a part of 5 brigades, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Cherry Gardens CFS. Congratulations to all the award recipients, and on behalf of the brigade officers, I would like to publicly thank each and every one of our brigade members for their hard work, perseverance, and patience over what was an intense fire season and now through the uncertainty of the covid-19 pandemic.

15.01.2022 Our SA Country Fire Service volunteers are real-life heroes - this year alone Cherry Gardens Country Fire Service has been called out 99 times, including deploy...ments interstate. I visited the local fire shed today with Steve Murray MP, Member for Davenport to say Gday and hear their stories. The past few months have been dominated by COVID-19 but these guys started 2020 defending our State against bushfires and storms. On behalf of the Marshall Government, thank you. #ThankyouFiries

15.01.2022 Lightning never strikes twice, but when it rains, it pours, and where there's smoke, there's fire... There's a saying for everything, but we have only one thing to say: Stay vigilant this fire danger season. Though our area received significant rain fall last friday, it doesn't mean that vegetation won't burn. This tree fire is believed to have been started by a lightning strike on Friday night. The tree then burned internally for almost 48 hours before collapsing and ignit...ing the grass below. Quick action from the land owners and neighbours helped control the fire before CFS crews from Cherry Gardens and Ironbank arrived to fully extinguish the tree and fire area. The fire danger season is far from over. Be prepared and make sure you have done your 5 minute bushfire survival plan at www.cfs.sa.gov.au

14.01.2022 As we near the end of a year that had more twists and turns than Main Road, we would like to thank our local community for one thing that has been constant; Their support of the brigade through our 10 cent bottle and can collection. Through simply dropping off bottles and cans to the bin and crates located at our logistic support shed, across the road from the station, our community helps us fund additional equipment and resources for brigade use. So thankyou! ... An additional thankyou also goes to two of our brigade members, Rob C and John S, for their significant effort in sorting and transporting the collected bottles and cans.

09.01.2022 Things have been a bit quieter than usual over the past few months, but as things start to ramp up again as covid-19 restrictions are eased, some of our projects around the station are starting to be completed. Our biggest one so far is the installation of an updated kitchen, including a new freestanding cook top, dishwasher, and boiling water tap. Colours and design were chosen by members, and installed by a local builder connected to our brigade, and we sure are impressed by the end result!

08.01.2022 Fireworks safety for New Year South Australia’s fire services are warning the community of the fire risks posed by fireworks, sparklers and barbeques as we ring... in the new year. A majority of public fireworks events in South Australia have been cancelled this year but the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and SA Country Fire Service (CFS) remind the public that there is no excuse to risk using fireworks at home. MFS Community Engagement Officer, Angelo Mastripolito, said the risk of injury or property damage needs to be considered when planning New Year’s Eve parties or gatherings. People using fireworks put themselves, their loved ones and the broader community at risk of serious injury, disfigurement or even death. If caught, offenders also face significant penalties or civil damages. Sparklers can be used only if there are no Total Fire Bans declared but parents must always supervise children using them, MFS Community Engagement Officer Mastripolito said. Warm, dry conditions are predicted across much of the state, bringing potential bushfire danger. South Australians are reminded that ‘sky lanterns’ a paper lantern that is set alight to make it float in the air are banned from use in the state. Sky lanterns pose a high fire risk if it were to land on dry grass or become trapped under the eaves of a building. CFS State Duty Commander, Sam Quigley said the use of illegal fireworks heightens the risk of bushfires starting during Fire Danger Season, but that there are also other steps we can take ensure everyone has a safe New Year’s Eve. We do not want New Year celebrations turning to tragedy because of one irresponsible act. Local parks or backyard parties are popular this time of year. While you can use smokers and wood fire ovens on days where there are no Total Fire Bans in place, please make sure you have a fire extinguisher or plenty of water on hand to stop any fires from spreading, CFS State Duty Commander Quigley said. The MFS and CFS also remind the community to check for leaks or breaks in gas lines and valves before firing up the barbeque over the festive period. When in doubt, replace hoses and/or the gas cylinder.

07.01.2022 It's been a bad summer for wildlife around Australia. Between extensive, severe bushfires and low rainfall, our native animals have suffered. Our station is so fortunate to be situated on a lovely parcel of land which is surronded by native vegetation, and with the help of Water for Wildlife, an initiative of Animals Australia and Do Something, we have installed drinking water stations for wildlife in the area. These refillable tubes have been positioned around the station ...in hope that we can help some of the local wildlife with reliable drinking water. These water stations as well as the straps to secure them are delivered free of charge by Water for Wildlife and is a fantastic initiative. For more information on these water stations, and how you may be able to acquire some for your property, visit www.w4w.org.au This project was initially bought to our attention by Minton Farm Animal Rescue Centre Facebook page. Thankyou to Bev and the team not only for sharing this water project, but the absolutely incredible work you do for sick and injured animals.

06.01.2022 We would like to share a friendly reminder with our community that despite the current COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to respond to all calls for assistance required by our brigade. We may on occasion be wearing additional protective equipment, but this is a precautionary measure so don't be alarmed. All infection control practices have been reviewed and all members will be conducting themselves in a manner to best serve everyone's best interests during this pandemic. At tim...es like this, please remember: Be kind. While socially we may not be able to get together like usual, take time to check on others in ways that limit physical contact. There's a lot of people out there who are struggling during the best of times, and these are not the best of times. Be kind, be generous, and look after each other. We saw the best of our community over summer as we all chipped in to support those affected by bushfire, so lets continue that spirit through this new unprecedented situation. And as per usual, we will be there if you need us.

06.01.2022 SomeBODY once told me that rona's gonna roll me, I should be isolating instead, People acting kinda dumb there's no loo roll in aisle one, And the food in my pa...ntry's exhausted. Well the coughs start coming and they don't stop coming, Bored with the rules so I left the house running, Didn't make sense not to live for fun, I've broken the rules and I feel so dumb, So much to do, so much to see It was wrong to break the quarantine, You'll never spread if you don't go, You'll never spread if you stay home. Hey now, be an all-star, wash your hands, use sanny, Hey now, be a rock star, social distance, it's great! And all new cases take note: Penalties now apply, you've been told.

05.01.2022 Happy International Day of Sign Languages! Below are more photos from the recent training Cherry Gardens CFS brigade did with the wonderful team from Deaf Can:Do. It was a great evening where we learnt a lot not only about AUSLAN sign language and phrases to use in emergency situations, but the deaf community itself. We highly recommend any workplace or organisation that may have deaf employees or interact with the general community to get in touch with Deaf Can:Do to find... out about the great learning opportunities available. Thanks to Deaf Can:Do and Evie Wonder for the photos from the night

03.01.2022 An absolutely disgusting act against one of our neighbouring brigades. If you may have seen or heard something, call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000

03.01.2022 Past and present, Cherry Gardens CFS brigade had always had a strong contingent of nurses and health care workers as a part of our team. From ICU and ED nurses, theatre nurses, and ward nurses, we are proud of every one of our members, current or retired, who work in healthcare, helping all members of our community. #InternationalNursesDay

02.01.2022 A year on, we recognise the impacts of the Cudlee Creek and Kangaroo Island fire. Under catastrophic conditions both of these fires started and continued to burn for weeks on end. Over 130 houses and properties were destroyed and, most devastatingly, three lives were lost across both fires. Today we remember the efforts of all emergency services and community organisations who helped with emergency response, evacuation and care of residents and wildlife, and the huge task of rebuilding. While conditions so far this summer have been milder, we still strongly encourage everyone to have a bushfire plan in place. It may make the difference for the safety of your family, pets, and property.
