25.01.2022 Yesterday's rain brought dozens & dozens of small frogs out of the dam and onto grass & the outside of our house especially the windows. The dual refection in the glass is due to it being double glazed.

25.01.2022 At this time of year the Golden Globe Waratah near our house is looking at it's best with lots of beautiful big yellow flowers all over it.

25.01.2022 Came across this guy close to the house this afternoon when I went out to cut the grass. A bit early in the day for him to be out of the forest but he seemed to be relaxing in the shade of the plants near the house.

25.01.2022 A feature of the skies above Cherryview during the spring and summer months are Welcome Swallows. They regularly zip around the house, the studio and over the dam, but getting a good photo is a challenge. For a close up photo, the best bet is to catch them taking a rest on a fence or, as in this case, on the washing line.

25.01.2022 Cygnet has a lot of creative folk living here and there is plenty of evidence around town to demonstrate this. Some of it is more permanent in the form of galleries & craft stores, but there are also more ephemeral examples like the recent Chalk Haiku project organised by Balfour House. Many of the examples of the Haiku are still on show in the form of stencils on shop windows and walls in the main street of town. Here are some of them.

24.01.2022 While I was working in the garden today I looked up to find that I had a spectator staring at me. I think he/she remembered that I fill up the water for the visiting cows, as once it got my attention it went over next to the bath, just in case I hadn't already got the hint.

24.01.2022 Uninvited guests! Just outside the back of our house this morning, I discovered these geese at the top of our middle paddock. They clearly knew they shouldn't be there as in the time that I went into the house to get my camera, they had raced off back down the hill and soon disappeared through the fence.

24.01.2022 Our pony Annie looking the cleanest she has been for a week or so. All the rain this week has made some of her lying down / rolling around spots in the paddocks very muddy and as a result she has been more black than white.

24.01.2022 This is a common site around the region at the moment as lots of paddocks are being slashed and the grass turned into silage. As has happened in this paddock down the hill from us.

23.01.2022 Looking down upon our dam from up the hill behind the Cherryview Studio, the roof of which is in the foreground.

23.01.2022 Early morning view of the Cherry orchards on the hill opposite with a cloud covered Mount Picton in the background. Only last week there was plenty of blossom visible on the trees but no longer.

23.01.2022 The wet overcast conditions today bought this guy out of the forest and down to our house this afternoon.

22.01.2022 It was wet and misty this morning and we were unable to see up the hill. We could however hear strange animal cries echoing down toward us through the clouds. When the mist cleared it was revealed to be a gaggle of noisy wandering geese.

22.01.2022 Some visitors chilling out in our bottom paddock.

21.01.2022 Looking out the windows at the moment we are nearly always rewarded with a view of a Superb Fairywren as there are plenty about.

21.01.2022 Another photo from our trip to Cradle Mountain where we saw lots of these beautiful guys. Over the years we have had a few guests at Cherryview who say they have glimpsed a wombats here, however in over 10 years we have never seen any evidence, so unfortunately it was most likely a combination of wishful thinking and a wallaby :)

21.01.2022 One of several Skinks that were out sunning themselves this afternoon on warm rocks along our driveway.

21.01.2022 The last week this particular White-faced Heron has become a daily visitor to our dam. The lure of the frogs is proving so great that it will even tolerate our nearby presence as long as we don't get too close.

21.01.2022 First echidna sighting of spring. Noticed this guy on the path ahead just of me and managed to get a quick pic before he/she disappeared under our shipping container out the back. They can move surprisingly fast when they want..

21.01.2022 This cute pair turned up on our deck last night, so we put out some apple for them.

21.01.2022 Yesterday we drove over to the Tasman Peninsula (about a 100 min drive from here) and took the opportunity to go on a tour with Wild Ocean Tasmania for a few hours. We expected to see some great scenery and wildlife like seals (which we did) but it was much better than that. It just so happened to be a fantastic day to see whales. There were lots of Humpback Whales feeding just a few KM off shore and we were lucky enough to spend some time out there with them & get to see it all close up. It was a fantastic experience and the few photos we took don't really do it justice (if you look around the net you will find plenty of better pictures from yesterday). We highly recommend the short cruises. You may not get to see whales (we were very lucky) but you should have a great time anyway.

20.01.2022 The Huon River just down river of the bridge on the southern side of Huonville.

20.01.2022 It was overcast and windy here this morning however i was rewarded for going outside to do some work, with a pair of Wedge-tailed eagles flying close-by and fairly low (i could clearly see their faces). Of course as soon as I went and got my camera, they decided to go up much higher and this is the best photo I could get.

20.01.2022 The flowers on our Golden Globe Waratahs are proving very attractive to the local bees.

20.01.2022 The view taken from the Channel Highway just south of Cradoc, looking over toward Franklin on the other side of the Huon River.

20.01.2022 After having our orchard / veggie garden area caged-in last year, we are now confident of planting fruit trees without fear of demolition by possum. One such tree is a cherry tree and we now have our first fruit! Hopefully there will be more to follow.

20.01.2022 The frogs in the dam seem quieter this afternoon. Could it be because of this guy roaming around the shallows?

19.01.2022 Looking down from the driveway to the studio over our clump of agapanthus & toward the Cherry orchards on the hill opposite.

18.01.2022 There is a lot of birdsong to be heard at Cherryview at this time of the year. Here is a Superb Fairy Wren singing away high up in an Acacia tree.

18.01.2022 A sign of Spring! Today we saw the first Welcome Swallow of the year zipping above the dam. We weren't able to take a photo of it but here is one from a couple of years ago.

18.01.2022 This metal Tasmanian Tiger sculpture which is positioned near the studio, often catches our guests by surprise especially at this time of year when the grass is that bit longer and it blends in. It can take a good second look before it becomes apparent that it isn't a living creature.

17.01.2022 An early evening visitor on the lawn just off our deck.

17.01.2022 We took advantage of having some free time the last few days to visit the north of the state, specifically Cradle Mountain. It is a really beautiful natural area and due to the current travel restrictions there were relatively few other tourists about.

17.01.2022 The local flock of camera shy geese heading for the hills when i stopped to take a photo of them.

17.01.2022 There are several pairs of Superb Fairy Wrens nesting around Cherryview at the moment, including a couple in the garden beds next to our house. We have heard young ones singing out for a few days now and today we saw our first sight of some fledglings including this little guy.

17.01.2022 We planted two apple trees in our orchard last year and we now have our first sign of blossom. It is obviously of appeal to ants because if you look closely there are quite a few of them on there.

16.01.2022 A few weeks ago we undertook a private walk and talk at The Raptor Refuge which is located at Kettering. We highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area who has the slightest interest in birds. While we often see raptors in the skies around Cherryview it is really special to see them close up, like we did with this Brown Goshawk and Brown Falcon. Bookings for the Walk and Talks are essential but it is well worth it.

16.01.2022 Waiting for pedestrians to cross the road!

16.01.2022 Whenever I pass our neighbour's goats as we drive in and out of Cherryview they always bring a smile to my face, and on this occasion I just had to stop & take this group portrait.

14.01.2022 A nice full dam following the rain of the last few days.

14.01.2022 These cute recent additions to our neighbour's goat herd are a bit late to the party. Most of this year's new arrivals are now several months old and quite big, so this pair really stand out.

14.01.2022 A light shower just as the sun was going down briefly produced this nice view of the Cherryview Studio and surrounding forest underneath a rainbow.

14.01.2022 We have had lots of ducks visiting our dam in recent weeks but they have been exclusively Pacific Black Ducks - until this morning when this pair of Chestnut Teal Ducks arrived.

13.01.2022 Took a walk along the path next to the forest this morning hoping to get a photo of a Goshawk that I'd observed from a distance. No luck with that, but came across several Currawongs.

12.01.2022 The plumage on the Australasian Grebe in our dam has changed noticeably in the last week or so. That means it is only a matter of time before it will either attract a mate and start to nest or will depart the dam in search of a mate.

12.01.2022 We are always hearing unusual bird calls from the forest, and also seeing from a distance, small birds flying in & out of the trees nearby trees - but getting a good look & identifying what they are, can sometimes be a challenge. Today we came across something we haven't seen that often, a Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike.

12.01.2022 It has been a beautiful spring day here. The blossom is in bloom on our plum trees and there have been plenty of bees coming to check it out.

11.01.2022 Kookaburra on one of the prime lookout spots near our dam - a powerline. From here they often launch themselves toward the dam in search of one of the many frogs in there.

11.01.2022 It is that time of year when we can no longer allow our pony Annie to roam over two large paddocks as she pleases and we have to enclose her in a small area behind an electric fence. This is because Annie came to us after years of neglect when she was allowed to severely founder. In the years since, (& after after lots of regular treatment), her feet are much better but they are unlikely to recover fully from the damage. If allowed to feast on the fresh spring grass she would soon pile on the weight and risk foundering.

11.01.2022 While Kookaburras are no strangers to Cherryview we currently have three or four that seem to have taken up temporary residence and are regularly making their presence known.

11.01.2022 One of our windows is conveniently positioned to allow us to watch birds feeding on some native plants only a couple of metres away, without them becoming aware of our presence. Usually if we see New Holland Honeyeaters there are only a couple of them but today there were six! We are wondering if they include recent fledglings.

10.01.2022 One of a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles that were high in the sky above Cherryview this morning.

10.01.2022 Early morning rainbow looking across the river and down the valley.

10.01.2022 I stopped to take some photos of our neighbour's Muscovy ducklings as I drove past earlier this week. They are growing very fast and there is an impressive survival rate compared with previous years. I couldn't decide which photo to post , so I selected several of the best.

10.01.2022 It is that time of year when we have to battle the dreaded thistles. We made a big effort several weeks ago to apply weedkiller to all the emerging plants and in some areas we have been successful in controlling most of them. In a couple of sites though the flowers are now appearing.

09.01.2022 This has basically been the permanent view looking south west for the last two days. We have had two cold cloudy wet days and it is only late afternoon that the sun has put in an appearance.

07.01.2022 Looking down upon what appears to be a tranquil Port Cygnet yesterday. In actual fact it was extremely windy!

06.01.2022 While we always have lots of pademelons hopping around the property (mostly at night), every now and then we get to see one of their larger relations like this Bennett's Wallaby who was out during the late afternoon on Saturday. On a couple of occasions we have seen a Forester Kangaroo, which are even larger, but we'd have to be very lucky to get a photo of one of them.

06.01.2022 Another colourful sky at dusk last night.

06.01.2022 From out the back of our house we have a great view down the hill of the strawberry fields on the other side of the highway. Those little dots of colour are the many individuals working on them - not something to be envied in the hot weather of the last two days.

06.01.2022 We have picked all our broad beans for this year. They are pretty easy to grow but you don't get many beans out of a bucketload like this. Once shelled you are left with a just couple of kilos of beans!

05.01.2022 Our Mop Tops are probably in the best condition they have ever been in. All we have to do now is workout how to delay the annual pruning that they receive courtesy of the local possums.

05.01.2022 This guy was roaming around out the back of our house again today. It must be getting used to me as on this occasion it didn't immediately head for cover as soon as it noticed my presence.

05.01.2022 At the moment it seems that wherever there are flowers there are bees!

05.01.2022 The sun disappearing over the horizon just to the left of Hartz Mountains last night.

05.01.2022 The native plants near our house are currently in flower with some looking quite impressive.

04.01.2022 As the next part of our efforts to rejuvenate an area of our property that was cleared well before we arrived 10 years ago, we are are planting some bird attracting natives like these grevilleas in between the wattles which we planted over the last two years. I'm glad I got these in the ground yesterday as they are now getting a good soaking from today's constant rain.

03.01.2022 Several years ago we planted tulips in one of our garden beds. The first year they grew nicely but after that they were not very very successful and the last few years we haven't had any. Then just recently this solitary example appeared and it came into flower this week.

02.01.2022 Spot the frog! I don't think I'd have noticed this well camouflaged little guy if it hadn't hopped up as I was watering this garden bed.

02.01.2022 On wet days like today it feels like even the frogs want to come in out of the rain.

02.01.2022 Sunset last night with Mount Picton just about visible in the distance on the left hand side of the picture.

01.01.2022 Outside the Cherryview Studio we have just installed a wifi booster inside a weather proof acrylic box. For some reason this box is proving very attractive to Bumblebees. Every time we were up at the studio yesterday there was at least one of them buzzing around it. It was easy to get a nice close up of this one checking out a hole where one of the screws goes in.

01.01.2022 New arrivals in one of our neighbour's paddocks -Muscovy Duck chicks.

01.01.2022 Hard not to smile at this Currawong with a beak full of nesting material. We assume that the nest is somewhere nearby in the forest.

01.01.2022 This Kookaburra is somewhat a creature of habit. For the last week every evening between 7-8pm we have seen it sitting on this fence post just out the back of our house.

01.01.2022 As it is National Wattle Day and they are on show all around the area we though it appropriate to have one feature in our post. The ones on our property which we have planted are all still a bit small and are yet to have any blossom, however this fine specimen is on display just over the other side of the fence of our bottom paddock.
