21.01.2022 Warning: Stringhalt Season Return! Over the past few weeks, we have had several reports from horse owners concerned that their horses may be suffering from Str...inghalt. The recent rain and heavy thunderstorms have triggered the growth of the dormant tap root of Flatweed or ‘Cat’s Ear’, the plant that is responsible for causing Pasture-Associated Stringhalt (PAS), formerly known as Australian Stringhalt). Flatweed can sprout in 3 4 days after rainfall to provide a succulent ‘green pick’. This green pick is very tempting for horses and ponies to consume when green pasture grass is scarce. The juicy, succulent leaves encourage horses to seek out the flatweed plants and it is possible that some horses may even become addicted to the taste of the leaves. Pasture-Associated Stringhalt is usually a seasonal condition caused by the ingestion of flatweed (Hypochaeris radicata). Flatweed and Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) are very similar in appearance and they are often found growing in the same area, this has implicated dandelion as being a possible cause of PAS in the past, but there is no strong evidence to suggest that ingestion of dandelion causes PAS. It is now believed that flatweed is the only culprit. Cases of Stringhalt are more commonly seen in tall breeds such as Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and the Heavy horse breeds. It has not been reported in shorter limbed ponies and miniatures. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a mycotoxin which causes PAS. Instead, PAS is caused by a poisonous nerve damaging chemical compound produced in the leaves of the flatweed (MacKay et al, 2013). The chemical in the plant affects the peripheral nervous system, especially the long sciatic nerves of the horse’s hind limbs by stripping the protective myelin sheath along the nerves. Signs of PAS may start to be noticeable within 7 21 days after the horse has consumed flatweed on a daily basis. Symptoms of PAS vary depending on the extent of damage to the nerve sheath. In mild cases, you may only notice a knuckling over of the rear fetlocks or slight incoordination in one or both hind limbs as the horse is walked off. In moderate cases, some horses may present with exaggerated upper flexion action in one or both legs, especially when they become excited or anxious. In severe cases, a horse will display complete, in-coordination with an exaggerated gait, making it almost impossible to walk or back up, especially off a horse trailer. Indeed, a simple test to confirm PAS is to try to gently push on the horse’s shoulder to push it back a few steps. If the horse is unable to walk backwards, then there is a high likelihood that the horse has PAS. It is important to remember, that if you are loading your horse suffering from PAS by walking up a float or truck ramp to take to your vet, they will not be able to walk backwards off the float! Early intervention is critical for recovery! Horses must be immediately removed from affected pastures and be kept in an area which does not contain flatweed. Dr. John Kohnke has worked with horse owners in Australia to help 1000’s of horses over many years who have suffered from both pasture associated stringhalt and classic stringhalt. He has found that supplementation with Kohnke’s Own Mag-E at double or even triple the normal dose for 7 1 0 days helps the recovery from stringhalt. Mag-E helps to keep affected horses quiet and calm and reduces excitement which causes a characteristic ‘goose-stepping’ gait as the sciatic nerve impulses stimulate hindlimb muscle contraction. Dr. John has found that the unique combination of special ingredients in Mag-E has helped many PAS affected horses to regain normal nerve and muscle function. Other feeding tips include offering lucerne hay as it provides good quality protein for eventual myelin repair. If you have a horse showing signs of PAS, we urge you to contact your veterinarian and remove your horse from paddocks containing flatweed. Early management is critical and if you need more information or advice, we invite you to contact our friendly Kohnke’s Own team by messaging our Facebook page, emailing [email protected] or Freecall to 1800 112 227. MacKay et al (2013).

08.01.2022 Hahaha... How true is this...

08.01.2022 The OTTB Legacy: Rest doesn’t always heal Gastric Ulcers! Gastric ulcers are a common problem in equine athletes, especially for horses in race, endurance and i...ntense equestrian training. However, even pleasure-riding horses can suffer from gastric ulcers and gastric irritation. Gastric ulcers are especially common in ex-Thoroughbred racehorses re-schooled for equestrian competition, as they often bring a legacy of gastric ulcers to their new equestrian life. If your Off-the-Track Thoroughbred (OTTB) is picky-eating, sour and girthy, then he could have gastric ulcers, even if he has been well rested and given lots of TLC after retirement from his racing career. Many OTTB owners believe that once a race horse, or indeed any horse suffering gastric ulcers, is spelled on a pasture or hay diet for a few weeks or longer, these painful stomach lesions will be healed. However, OTTBs and spelling racehorses can still have gastric ulcers, even after long periods of green grazing and paddock rest. In fact, a study found that OVER HALF (57%) of Thoroughbred race mares that were retired from racing, and kept as broodmares, still had gastric ulcers in the same position and severity, after 15 months of a pasture diet and rest. This means that many OTTBs may suffer from gastric ulcers long after their racing career has ended. When these susceptible horses commence retraining, or a new equestrian activity, the gastric irritation can flare up again, causing the common symptoms of pain and discomfort that are often misunderstood as ‘naughtiness’, ‘nappiness’, bad manners or resistance to work. If you believe your horse is suffering from gastric ulcers, the ultimate diagnosis is naso-gastric scoping in an equine veterinary hospital. However, the cost and availability of this procedure can exclude many horse owners. Drugs, such as omeprazole, are a common and effective treatment but they are expensive. A course of Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat, a natural feed supplement containing natural phospholipids and mucilages helps to provide relief from existing gastric irritation or ulcers and minimise the risk of new acid burns. Gastro-Coat is used by thousands of horse owners across Australia, with most owners reporting an improvement in their horse’s behaviour after 7 10 days of Gastro-Coat supplementation. For more information on Gastric Ulcers or Gastro-Coat, PM our Facebook page or email [email protected] Pictured: Group 1 winning galloper Manawanui, now enjoying show and equestrian riding with Petra from Ridge View Equestrian. Mana had a healthy and successful start to his new career with a combination of Kohnke’s Own supplements, including Gastro-Coat.

05.01.2022 Great results with Gastro-Coat Do you have a girthy, sour, picky or slow-eating horse? Is your horse sensitive to your leg or reluctant to go forward, especiall...y in canter? These horses are often given the ‘Dragon’ label the naughty, nappy or just plain grumpy horse! However, in many cases, this is a response based on stomach pain or irritation. Horses that are girthy, picky eating and unwilling when handled or ridden are often experiencing gastric irritation or may even have gastric ulcers. Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat is a natural and highly effective supplement to help your horse with gastric irritation. Gastro-Coat has multiple actions that can help horses to feel more comfortable with optimal digestive function. Horses can benefit from Gastro-Coat for gastric health and appetite stimulation, but especially when being handled or ridden, or even when travelling. Gastro-Coat is also fully compatible with gastric ulcer medications, such as omeprazole-based prescriptions. A dose of Gastro-Coat is simple to give and very affordable! You can give Gastro-Coat before training each day or just in the feed if your horse is picky or slow eating. Horses love Gastro-Coat and we have found that once they are introduced to the supplement, they quickly learn to associate it with stomach relief and look for it again! We frequently receive feedback from horse owners who are so happy that Gastro-Coat has made a visible, lasting difference to their horse in just a few weeks. ‘My thoroughbred gelding Frank had become cranky and girthy and felt like he was uncomfortable when ridden. After talking with the team at Kohnke’s Own, I started Frank on Gastro-Coat and within a few short weeks he has improved considerably, he is no longer girthy and is much happier to be handled and ridden.’ Caterina H. ‘When I first rescued Bentley he was in poor condition, you could clearly see all of his ribs. I found it hard to put weight on him, then I tried Kohnke’s Gastro-Coat. After two weeks of Gastro-Coat Bentleys condition started to improve and now he is looking better than ever. I have recommended this product to so many other equestrians out there because you can really see the difference it makes!’ Priya W. ‘Izzie is my 12 year old Australian Stock Horse mare. I bought her as a green 9yo around three and a half years ago. As I began working and competing her more she began to get a little grumpy and act really out of character. We discovered it was stomach ulcers! Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat has really helped up to maintain her gastrointestinal health, it is now a staple in her diet and we wouldn’t take her off it! She is just so happy and performs really well while being fed the supplement.’ Mogran L.
