25.01.2022 The children were all very excited to visit the playground so we didn't let the weather stop us visiting Grande Ave Playground, Springfield. We arrived with the weather just being cloudy and the park all to ourselves. Then it started to sprinkle, they got very dirty and wet and it was awesome fun before we cleaned up to head for home. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the rain finally falling.
22.01.2022 Elf Holly has been playing hide and seek with the children this week. It's so much fun watching them play, then all of a sudden someone remembers Holly and they are all working as a team walking around trying to find where she is. I really hope everyone is safe in this heat and has a chance to enjoy a hot weekend.
22.01.2022 To my little people may your first day be full of fun and friendships. To my parents be proud, enjoy the moment, deep breatheTo my little people may your first day be full of fun and friendships. To my parents be proud, enjoy the moment, deep breathe
21.01.2022 This week I had planned for us to Connect to Country by reading one of our favourite Aboriginal Dreamtime stories about the Rainbow Serpent. The day had a wonderful flow thanks to everyone's input. Just as our day was starting our animal loving friend came dressed in his khaki outfit and because he was passionate about seeing the animals at Australia Zoo on the weekend, expressed his creativity as a Rainbow Snake using the rainbow puzzle pieces that were out on display. On th...e day clouds started to fill the sky and gave us a sprinkle of rain but sadly no rainbow, so we decided to make our own rainbows. We experimented with some water and a CD and found that submerging the CD fully into the water gave us a rainbow while we were outside with the bright light around us. After making the rainbows my little people were inspired to paint a rainbow. I gave them the primary colours so that they could make their own colours. Their mixing moved from the plate to the paper, but they got excited when their brush had a rainbow of colours on it and they painted their hands to show off the rainbow that they had made.
21.01.2022 It has finally dawned on me what having 7 children (1 in the stroller) lined up walking into school remind me of...... presenting the Cheryl Von Trapp Tribe. Just so you know, I look nothing like the beautiful and talented Julie Andrews and my little people can confirm that I don't have the angelic singing voice like she does. The best they get is that I can hold a tune, but I'm thinking about the children. My little people look just like the Von Trapp family lined up walking single file so that we can be safe as COVID moves around and just like each of the children in the movie, whether big or little, they each have their own very unique personalities that will touch your heart when you really get to know them.
21.01.2022 Hello everyone I am asking on behalf of a front line neighbour who approached me this morning to not beep your horn as you leave please. She was distressed as she explained that she isn't sleeping very well and as a shift worker needed her sleep whenever she could get some at any time of the day.... If this is something we can do to reduce her stress or maybe others in our community, I respectfully ask that all who come to my home please refrain from beeping. Thanks everyone for understanding. Stay safe. Cheryl
21.01.2022 Happy New Year everyone I really hope that you and your family have had a wonderful start to 2020 and I hope that it's going to be a wonderful year, and an amazing new decade. With the weather being warmer and to celebrate our first day together for the new year, the children and I were having a miniature pool party. I was watching them keeping cool playing with the water and their choice of dinosaurs, when I noticed a visitor walking around on the ground. I had a feeling... why we were getting the visit so I scooped up some water and put it up on the fence. The pink galah flew up, walked over, had several good drinks and then flew off. It happened so quickly that the children just stood amazed at being so close to such a beautiful bird. It's sad that the wildlife is struggling to find water, but I hope that anyone reading this post might be encouraged to think about a way they could safely leave some water for them to find while we all wait for the drought to break.
21.01.2022 Happy Father's Day Dad's To all the dad's who had the luxury of waking up on their own this morning or who were excitedly yelled at to wake up, I really hope that you have a chance to breathe in the special moments that having children in your life can bring. I really hope that my little people's dads have enjoyed the special gifts that were made with so much love for them.... This year with my little people grabbing a shovel to dig in the sand nearly every day and needing an activity that could be enjoyed by a school aged child, we made our dads a meat rub as part of their present. Each dad has a video that they can watch to see how their little person made them their very special concoction so that they know how much of each has been added. I did guide them use the smaller spoon for salt and pepper, but I really hope that when they told me that dad likes onions on the BBQ that he really does with the heaped tablespoons of onion flakes that were added to some I really hope everyone has a wonderful day
21.01.2022 Elf Holly has arrived! Just as I was turning off all of the lights a very bright glow was shining in our play room. I wonder if that is Elf Holly's night light? Let the fun of observation each day begin
20.01.2022 I had a very humbling moment this week as we visited school. On our way to class I ran into one of my little people I haven't seen for a few months, who is in Grade 2 this year, I met up with 2 of our prep friends and their mums from last year and we were there dropping our other prep friend off to class. As the children that were in my care for that morning sat on the chair together, I was touched that these were all my little people. I felt humbled that these little peo...Continue reading
20.01.2022 Friday and today have been both super amazingly wonderful days and hugely emotional for me. The outings have been to celebrate children who are off to school. One of them has spent nearly a lifetime with me as he came to me when he was only 10 months of age and today was his last day with me so that he can make wonderful family memories before starting school. To celebrate their special milestone, on Friday we went to Orion's playground, went to the movies and saw Frozen 2 an...d finished off with our favourite letter D shop - Domino's pizza for lunch. Today having only 2 little school aged people, gave me a wonderful opportunity to take them to swim at Southbank. So much fun playing together in the water before heading off to have a party lunch of hot chips and icecream. We had enough time to see the exhibition about the Aboriginal Didjeridu at the Museum, which was a wonderful way to end our outing before heading for home to say our goodbyes.
20.01.2022 We had a very special start to our morning because we had the chance to take one of our Prep friends to school. The best part for me was that we got to meet our other Prep friends as well that have also transitioned to school. They are all doing such a great job of settling into school life and I couldn't be happier for them. Once school had started we had the chance to walk slowly back to the car and enjoy the murals that we could see from the pathway. To me this is one of the special teaching moments that I get to share with my little people on our school journey, as we talked about the animals and the aboriginal symbols that we could find.
18.01.2022 Colours and circles were the focus for this week. The coloured cog puzzle was very popular with all ages, but especially for my really little people who had a chance to focus on making their fine motor skills work to grip the cog and having the right coordination to make it turn without pulling it off. There are a variety of places around our play area where the children can choose to play with colours. For the older children it was good to help encourage using descriptive... words like a blue plate and at the same time reinforce the colours for those that are unsure. We played our colourful beetle game through the week while others were asleep and before doing the school run on the only day it rained. Outside, tiny grasshoppers have been keeping the children entertained in between exploring things like their shadow and what they can do with some cars and a tube. Inside, the wet weather had them coming up with their own fun play ideas. Hiding behind all of the sensory cushions was very popular. I just couldn't help myself by tickling their feet when they would yell out 'you can't see me'. We spent time throughout the week exploring different activities relating to circles. Using circle cutters and other utencils with playdough gave us lots of different sized circles and we had playdough Olaf come to visit us. We also used some of our recycled lids to paint with and to draw around to help guide the children of how to draw a circle. The children all wanted to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar one last time so we celebrated World Book Day reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar and doing some of the activities that they had really enjoyed. The buzz for me was reading parts like 'On Monday he at through' and having the children excitedly replying 'one apple but he was still hungry'. They certainly have grown to love this book. After finishing a great week, I was really surprised that my week finished so crazy. I had a crazy weekend having to hunt down basic hygiene supplies that I need for my little people. I was so lucky to be able to source everything that I needed after hearing some of the horror stories of what is happening in shopping land right now. I just hope you are all shopping safely out there.
17.01.2022 We read a wonderful book filled with Australian animals this week called Wombat Stew. We read the book and then using the props we tried to reenact what happened in the book. My little people also wanted to put their creative skills into action designing their own Wombat Stew. I gave them an idea of how I would design mine but I so love the variety of creations and different ideas that they came up with. I know that expanding the story with other activities is something that they enjoy and helps them retell the story, because I would hear the phrase 'Wombat Stew, Wombat Stew' being sung while they were pretend playing.
17.01.2022 Following the leader to stay COVID safe with school drop off
16.01.2022 We've had a pretty relaxed sort of week as we get back into doing our school run routine. I was so glad that things were back to a bit more of a routine, so we were able to get back to reading books. The 'Robots' book didn't have allot of pages but it does offer reading options - it's a pop up which had them loving the robots sliding when I opened the book; it has rhyming words; and gives the chance to find items in the illustration, which created the opportunity to have gro...up discussions. My little people were very charged after reading the book and put their imaginations to work coming up with their own recycled robots from the items that I had on offer. Some of the bits I already have available but the recycled items came from a variety of places. The white paper was from partner's job, with forms on one side that they no longer needed. One of our talented local seamstresses collects some wonderful loose parts for me that she thinks we can use, like the corrugated cardboard that became everyone's robot body. The eyes are collected each day from my little people's yoghurt squeezy packs that we use for a variety of activities. So this week I can say we've been working on saving the planet one robot at a time.
16.01.2022 Our outing to Little Nippers Playgroup will most probably be our last Outing to Ipswich Rail Museum. Their theme right now is Gum Tree Family so we talked about lots of things like the animals that you could find in a gum tree. The children were very eager to put their creative talents into making a very decorative frilled neck lizard. They had a chance to drive the Tilt Train before heading to the Little Nippers play area to expand allot of energy.
14.01.2022 Elf Holly has been keeping the children busy trying to find her. Today had them stumped until after morning tea when they were putting their lunchboxes in the fridge
14.01.2022 We had our last Playgroup outing to the Camira Springfield Community Centre because it is time for us to start preparing for Christmas. My little people had fun riding around and playing with the toys that are so wonderfully set out to explore. Our transition activity today was to walk backwards, which they all showed off their talents and successfully completed the task. We enjoyed listening to the story Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush before playing with the different... play spaces. The morning comes to an end with a group singing activity. This has certainly been a wonderful outing. See more

13.01.2022 With the weather being warm and muggy it was a perfect day to visit the water park at Darlington Parklands. They had fun stepping from one rock to another, trying to stop the water from flowing, walking and kicking through the water, sitting on the fountains to try and stop them from spurting and trying to redirect where they spurted. While we were at the spurting water fountain area, one of the children was fascinated with his wet footprints disappearing on the cement and h...is frequent travels started the trend of everyone wanting to have a turn. I so love watching them explore their world. The children also spotted the exercise equipment, so they all wanted to have a turn. They all enjoyed putting their muscles and coordination to good use and did an amazing workout trying out the different machines while the youngest just sat and watched what they were all up to.
13.01.2022 Lest We Forget At 11 am we stopped to remember those that had spent so much time away from their family so that we can be free. Living in Greenbank we often hear Army personnel gun practise, so it is a sound that they have heard. I hope that none of us will ever have to experience it. I am so grateful to the sacrifices that our serving Service personnel past and present give so that we can be free. We also read a story and put our creative talents to good use. The children made a couple of poppy biscuits; and cut out and decorated their own poppies to make a poppy wreath.
13.01.2022 For our last Kindy outing together we took a train ride into Brisbane City to celebrate Christmas. We went to King George Square and saw the very big Christmas tree; explored the very elegant entrance and Cinderella stairs in the City Hall finishing with a special morning tea at Shingle Inn where we were served like royalty with beautiful plates. We visited the Queen Street Mall, Myer windows and Santaland. We all really enjoyed our visit as we went on a special train tri...p, drew pictures for Santa and my favourite was to get special photos of us all together having some crazy magical fun. The extra special event for me was that one of my little people got to share this experience with mum and brother and another got to share it with Nana. These ladies were such a blessing to have as they held different children's hands and chatted away so that each child could have a more personal experience. I so hope that this might be a happy memory for them because it is a wonderful memory I have from when I was their age doing this with my Nana.
12.01.2022 Elf Holly was into the party spirit to end out the week, just in time to celebrate a little person's birthday and have a very special Christmas Party celebration. With 3x of my little people off to school next year (1x that has been with me since he was 10 months old), 1x finishing prep, 1x finishing Grade 6, 1x having their first birthday and some very active 3 year old's it was the perfect year to have a jumping castle. The weather tried to put a dampener on our festivities Friday afternoon, but my families (and the jumping castle owner) were awesome and we postponed it to Saturday morning. It was certainly an emotion filled morning celebrating our year and starting our goodbyes.
11.01.2022 Twas the afternoon before Christmas and all through my house ... no children are laughing because they've gone home to their families. It was sad to see Elf Holly hugging the friends she has made this year on her visit, but it is a good reminder to share the love with anyone who is special to you. To anyone who will read this post - may you have a special family Christmas filled with wonderful memories. Cherish your time together as time seems to gather speed the older the...y get. 2020 is going to be awesome so enjoy however you choose to welcome in the new year. Be in the moment - Love lots - Stay safe. Cheryl
11.01.2022 We visited the Ipswich Art Gallery to start off our school holiday activities. The children loved playing in Tape Scape, constructing with the big and little blue blocks. I took the children in my care two years ago to the first Tape Scape, so it was pretty special to be able to take back one little person that was with me on that outing to explore the bigger climbing area that has been designed this time around. We were there for just over 4 hours and I've been asked if they can go back. We will have to see if I can organise with everyone taking holidays at different times if I can get them back there before school starts, but it was nice to know that they really enjoyed their day.
10.01.2022 We have been having lots of fun this week with water play and spending time with friends doing what they like to do together. Today was a special celebration of playing fun games together because another little person is leaving to have family time before they start back at school. We played several games but their favourite game was the one I had set out in honour of their love of dressing up and pretend playing as a Superhero - we had an obstacle course finishing with a b...ox bad guy. They certainly gave it all they had and the bad guy didn't stand a chance.
10.01.2022 This week we have been on a couple of outings. The first outing was to Orion where we had a chance to play in the playground; find out that the strange noise that we could hear as we played was a little excavator doing some digging; share a special morning tea together and get some new books to read. The children were excited to get one of the free books from Big W to bring home to share with their families. The Australian Animal Mother's and Babies book that we found at B...ig W gave us a chance to talk about more baby animal names than just the baby farm animals that we had been singing about with Old MacDonald. Later in the week we went on a special outing to Educator Sandy's house, who kindly invited us visit so that we could extend on our bee learning fun. Fran from Moggill Honey brought along some real bees for us to safely watch and gave us a sample of the honey that she farms. I so agree with my little people that ate their honey sandwhich all up, that it was so yummy. Even better was the lovely tasting Macadamia Nut Honey, it was so smooth I just had to come home with some. We've also started looking at the different bugs that we can find thanks to a special visitor that I needed to move from our play area. The large bugs were great for pretend playing, we played our Beetle game and learnt some special words about the lifecycle of a butterfly. The larger bugs were very popular, I think because even though they were realistic looking they weren't a real life size.
08.01.2022 Do you know that cooking cupcakes is very educational? With families celebrating the first day at school, we put our cooking skills to good use making cupcakes as a special treat for their families to share. My little people had fun using their motor skills, cognitive skills and language skills as we practised how to measure, crack, mix fast and slow, scoop, pour, count, spread and pinch. ... They were so excited to take their culinary masterpieces home.
07.01.2022 We had such a wonderful day out today at the Christmas Party that my service - Choices Family Day Care organised for us. We exclusively attended a play centre to climb, explore, dance, feast and have a visit with Santa. It was extra nice that one of my families who doesn't attend today were also able to join us so that we had more friends to share our fun with.
07.01.2022 The cool gentle breeze brought us a wonderful surprise visitor while we were outside playing. After a group discussion we decided that it was a caterpillar, with a cocoon on it's back. We came up with the hypothesis because it looked like a caterpillar popping out (shadow person pointing to the head) and then each time I moved the cup it would hide in it's cocoon. When it felt safe it would come out to crawl along the cup again with caterpillar like legs. The cocoon had bits of leaves and other things from nature. We tucked it in a tree in the hope of keeping it protected from predators and to find somewhere to stick to.
07.01.2022 I don't know about everyone else but I can't believe we are nearly at the end of the year. I think planning helps things move quicker as I have basically planned and I'm ready to finish out the school term, which is when my learning based activities transition to preparing for Christmas and just having fun. Even though I plan and prepare activities for the week, they sometimes don't happen if the children are engaged in their own choices. This week my soon to be Kindy aged ...children were having so much fun doing activities together, they wanted to just keep doing their own thing. One of their ideas had them dress up as a Superhero and decide to take a risk and jump off the highest point of our fort. I'm not disappointed that we didn't do my planned activity, as I see these spontaneous moments just as important as anything I can teach them. Having good social skills - taking turns, being excited about your friends jump, being prepared to take a risk and then know that your friends support your concerns not to do it again and they will change to playing a game of tag instead - is far more important for them right now. I should add that even though this wasn't a planned activity per se, I have a feeling that my environment, which in Early Childhood Settings is technically referred to as 'the third teacher' as informed by Reggio Emilia, may have sparked their superhero interest. Inside on our discovery table this week they have been playing with our superhero school and the superhero capes that have been hanging up outside unused for weeks became an important part of their playtime. No matter how they got to that moment, the smiles help tell a very happy story.
06.01.2022 Not long into the morning Elf Holly was spotted and pointed out to friends that she was watching them play.
05.01.2022 With a couple of our friends away on holidays, we had the chance to have a wonderful day exploring South Bank with one of my little people who will soon be off to school. We visited the QPAC Art Walk, the playground, had a swim, before having a special lunch and finishing off with the museum. Thankfully at the museum they escaped from being eaten by the spider, to explore the animals and the Didgeridoo Exhibit - Yidaki before heading for home.
03.01.2022 I have a huge secret to share....... My eldest son is performing tonight in the half time entertainment at the AFL GRAND FINAL 2020 at the Gabba around 7:20pm!! He has been practising for the last 1 1/2weeks to perform in a drumline of 30 strong drummers, to support the band Sheppard. He will be in the front row near the middle. So hopefully all will go well, the rain will be kind and I'll get to see his beaming face as he nails it!... https://www.smh.com.au//all-aussie-music-lineup-announced-
03.01.2022 Each morning I start my day reading Facebook posts on 'The Kindness Pandemic' page which is sharing the love that is being spread around the world. There have been posts of children sharing artwork for their community to hopefully brighten their day. This week my little people were excited to help me and stood with their friends to express themselves through painting. To those who read this post or see the sign on my fence, especially my little people, may you know that you ...are a 'superstar' just by being you. Cheryl
02.01.2022 Did you know.... Free travel starts today and goes for 4 Mondays. We are definitely taking advantage of this amazing opportunity! https://bit.ly/372mEPT
02.01.2022 Most of the week Elf Holly has been playing hide and seek but one day she did bring us some books to unwrap and read. The Find the Elf book has been very popular, although I'm not always convinced that they have found the right Santa.
