25.01.2022 Hope everyone had a happy Easter filled with chocolate and hot cross buns and all good things. Our vegetable garden is yielding the last of the summer fare, and with the quinces and chestnuts falling, we know that autumn is settling in. (Thanks to Lorna and Peter for taking some of our quinces home last year and returning this year with a jar of quince jelly!)

24.01.2022 Meanwhile, not far away at the Stanley Goose...

22.01.2022 A mug of tea and Betty's legendary passionfruit sponge cake... It must mean that Australia's Biggest Morning Tea took place again today! Stanley has such an active sense of community and it was on display in full force today, as the locals came together to raise funds for cancer research. Thanks to everyone involved in making it such a fantastic event! :)

22.01.2022 Well I love the sound of rain on a tin roof as much as the next person, but it's been WONDERFUL to see the sun again after weeks of wintry gloom. Here are a few flowers to cheer up your August day.

21.01.2022 Not much is happening in the garden at the moment. The viburnums are flowering, of course, and some foolhardy camellias are providing a splash of colour along the driveway. But these little jonquils really gladden our hearts - the first of the bulbs to flower, the first of literally thousands to come over the coming months. They're predicting snow here on Tuesday - we'll let you know if they're right!

20.01.2022 A very happy New Year's Eve to all - may the coming year be a peaceful, joyful, healthy and fulfilling one for everyone! We look forward to seeing some of you over the next twelve months! :)

18.01.2022 We've just had a cancellation for the Opera in the Alps weekend - Friday 15 and Saturday 16 January 2016. There's a great lineup planned for the event so if you or anyone you know likes the idea of a weekend in the beautiful countryside around Stanley and Beechworth, listening to some wonderful musical talent (and enjoying some fine local food and wine, of course), here's your chance! http://www.australianmusicevents.com.au/opera-in-the-alps-p

18.01.2022 July in Stanley is lovely its so peaceful in the area and theres always the chance of a light dusting of snow to keep things interesting. Roaring fires at local wineries, long lunches, brisk walks in the bracing winter sunshine Its all good! We love it! Andwed like to share it with our Facebook friends. 17.01.2022 It's been snowing again... :)

16.01.2022 We hope that everyone's year got off to a flying start! We went down to Albury the other day to visit the refurbished Murray Art Museum (www.mamalbury.com.au) and see the fantastic exhibition called "Impressions of Paris", which showcases art by Toulouse-Lautrec, Daumier and Degas. Great exhibition (and a sensational 20th Century photography exhibition too!) and the building is amazing. Coffee at the museum's café was pretty good as well... :) We're so proud to have MAMA as part of our local cultural experience!

16.01.2022 Saw this when I was in Beechworth this morning. Such a happy thing, it made me smile.

15.01.2022 Following on from my previous post, please note that whilst I'm recuperating, we are not taking any new bookings for the cottage at the moment. Thank you very much for your understanding, we will keep you informed! If you'd like to enjoy Stanley in spring time (and indeed it looks glorious up in this part of the world!), we can recommend the Stanley Goose as a lovely place to stay. :) Stanley Goose Country Cottage Holiday Rental

15.01.2022 My back is improving though, and I am able to potter around gently now - especially when the sun is out in the garden. It really is looking beautiful, with bluebells and blossoms and tulips and all good things. I thought you might like to see some photos!

14.01.2022 Our guests who were due to stay on Valentine's weekend have had to postpone thanks to an unexpected work trip to Chicago - so the cottage is available again for booking! The nights of Friday 12, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February are available, so you can take your pick of any two nights for $290. We usually get a flurry of enquiries in the week leading up to Valentine's Day - so we wanted to let our Facebook friends know about it first, before the dates get snapped up! :)

14.01.2022 Our chestnut harvest is under way! They're good this year. Some of our recent guests have been enjoying them on the barbecue - cooking chestnuts can't get much more simple than that! Delicious too. :) Over the coming months, we're planning to tackle some of the recipes just published on myfoodbook - we'll let you know how they go! http://myfoodbook.com.au//contributors/australian-chestnuts

13.01.2022 Good morning everyone! Our first big frost of the season. :) It's not quite as cold as it looks out there, it's going to be a glorious day.

12.01.2022 We've been out in the garden today, doing a bit of this, a bit of that. The lilies are flowering, the dahlias are hanging in there and we have a bumper crop of kiwifruit and plums this year! The parrots are already tucking in...but the fruit's not quite ready to pick. We're hoping that we might end up with enough for a fruit salad or two, if the birds are kind.

12.01.2022 Hello everyone! It's been an eventful week of change worldwide... And there's been a change closer to home as well. Finally, we have some news - after nearly a decade of welcoming guests, we've decided to close our little cottage. It's been quite an emotional decision and hasn't been made lightly - we've been thinking about it for a while. As some of you will know, my back has been problematic off and on for a few years now and, although I'm well on the mend again, what with... one thing and another, it feels like it's the right time to let the cottage go and to say goodbye. I'm so glad that we've been able to share our lovely piece of Stanley with you. We have met some wonderful people, really wonderful people, and have made some cherished friends along the way. Sincere thanks to all of our Facebook friends - we have received a great deal of support and encouragement from many of you, and it has meant such a lot to us. May you enjoy peace, happiness and prosperity, wherever your life journeys may take you. Again, thank you, and very best wishes, Nicole

12.01.2022 Autumn is a little slow in arriving but the chestnuts have started to fall and Qantas has obligingly published a fantastic article about the Beechworth area, just in time to whet your appetite for the season. (Nice to see Stanley getting a few mentions in there, too!)

11.01.2022 Snow falling gently on the garden...

11.01.2022 Haven't posted for a while - sorry! We went away for a little while and came back to find the garden in overdrive... This is looking up the path to a little studio that we use as a store-room - so many flowers! And so quiet - only the sound of the birds and a gentle breeze. Ah, Stanley. (The video quality isn't great... But you'll get the idea.) :)

11.01.2022 We've seen quite a few koalas around the area over the years - but never right in the heart of Beechworth!

09.01.2022 Winter was late in arriving but has seemed in little hurry to move along. Today, though, you could feel a sense of spring - sparkling sunshine, daffodils nodding in the breeze. The perfect day for gardening and warm, too, with the scent of violets in the air. The last week of August traditionally is when we prune the roses at the front of the house. There are about a hundred of them planted there, all of them a stunning David Austin variety called Sharifa Asma, which produce ...spicily fragrant blooms in pale pink and cream. They need only light pruning, which is just as well in terms of time, but they appreciate it nevertheless. I found a photo the other day that I took years ago when they were in full regalia. The silver birches and weeping cherry are much larger now, so the roses don't get as much sun as they used to, but they still bloom gallantly year after year. They really are the most beautiful things, and it has been lovely to spend a day amongst them, their thickets of bare stems just starting to come into leaf. Roll on spring.

09.01.2022 If you'd been staying in the cottage last night, you might have heard some gentle thumps - kangaroos were hopping around the cottage, really close, right beside the verandah. There were two of them, their tracks made my heart leap with joy this morning! :)

08.01.2022 We spent most of today in the garden, trying to find a path that had fallen victim to summer's lush growth. It was a glorious day for it, bright and golden and not too warm! I took some snapshots of some trees which are coming into their full autumnal finery.

07.01.2022 Driving to Albury the other day, we couldn't believe how advanced spring is down there - the wild plums and apples that line the road were an exuberant mass of pink and white. It's a similar story in Beechworth. Things are much slower in Stanley, on the whole - most of our trees are still yawning and stretching and thinking about waking up - but the grass has grown about a foot in the past week, the magpies are busily collecting twigs for nests, there are plenty of flowers about and you really can feel the garden coming to life. Here are some random snapshots. (Happy Sunday!)

06.01.2022 I don't usually write personal notes on the cottage's Facebook page, but I'm making an exception today. I want to thank all of our wonderful friends who've rallied round to help us out since I injured my back yet again two weeks ago. I don't know what we would have done without your help and encouragement, I know that some of you really have gone out of your way and it means such a lot to us! A very heartfelt thank you to all of you, you are appreciated so greatly.

05.01.2022 Looks like they were right, for once. Snow! For about three minutes... But what an exciting three minutes. :) It's looking pretty grim outside now as dusk settles, the temperature is around zero and we're hoping to wake up tomorrow to a classic winter wonderland. Hot chocolate is at the ready.

04.01.2022 Anzac Day was another beautiful day here at Chestnut Farm Cottage - it's been one of the loveliest autumns that we have known. We went into Beechworth this morning to buy some cheese and a bottle of Eldorado Road wine, then came home for a picnic in the garden... And spent the rest of the afternoon lounging under the birch trees in our hammock. Simple pleasures. :) We feel very fortunate to be able to share our part of the world with others.

04.01.2022 Today was glorious. Warm, quiet, bees buzzing, a gentle breeze. The perfect start to the week.

04.01.2022 Look what we've woken up to this morning!

03.01.2022 We just bought some new chairs for the cottage garden. All we need now is an Aperol spritz and it would be a very lazy end to our Sunday afternoon!

02.01.2022 Great to see some of our favourite local places getting the attention they deserve. :)

02.01.2022 It's been quite a grumpy August weatherwise, but the sun did appear for a few minutes today - and very welcome it was, too!

01.01.2022 Wish granted. :) Welcome to our winter wonderland!

01.01.2022 To all of our Chestnut Farm Cottage friends, wherever you are around the world, we wish you all the best for the festive season! May it be happy and safe and filled with all sorts of good things. :) (Including food, of course! Here's a recipe to get you in the mood for what the day may bring... Wafer thin, we promise. Merry Christmas!) http://www.thesugarhit.com//chestnut-chocolate-mousse-reci

01.01.2022 Here are some more photos - and there are plenty more where these came from! (I'll keep it short and sweet, though.)
