23.01.2022 LEVATOR AVULSION - what is it, why does it happen and what can I do if it happens to me? A levator avulsion injury is where part or all of the pelvic floor muscles are pulled off the pubic bone on one or both sides. This can occur during a vaginal delivery. ... Research shows that up to 1/3 of women who have had a Vaginal delivery will have an avulsion and up to 21% of women will sustain an avulsion during a first vaginal delivery. Further risk factors include previous sever perineal tears, pushing >2hours and use of forceps during delivery. An avulsion has shown to double the risk of a bladder prolapse and triple the risk of a uterine prolapse. Currently there is no surgical intervention that can fix an avulsion. So why am I telling you about this? Because knowledge is power and most women I come across with an avulsion injury only learn about them once they are trying to treat them. If you have been doing your pelvic floor exercises for more than 3 months and feel like you are not making any progress please see a trained women’s health Physio for correct diagnosis and management.
22.01.2022 Neck, shoulder and upper back pain is extremely common in new mums, in ladies who spend too much time at a computer and during pregnancy. Getting on top of these aches and pains sooner rather than later can certainly help things professing and it’s never fun trying to parent or look after the grandkids when you are limited by pain. We have appointments available for physiotherapy Monday to Saturday. Call 55047000
21.01.2022 Does the sound of running water make you go rushing for the toilet? YOU MAY HAVE WHAT IS REFERRED TO AS OVERACTIVE BLADDER (OAB) OAB refers to urinary urgency and frequency, a sudden overwhelming desire to pass urine, which may or may not be associated with urinary incontinence. Sudden compelling urges are involuntary bladder spasms as the bladder is filling which is not normal. Urgency can worsen or come on with triggers such as running water, key in the door as you arrive h...ome. Research shows that OAB affects up to 25% of adult males and up to 40% of adult females. Some causes of OAB include pelvic floor weakness and pelvic floor tightness/overactivity, chronic constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, low oestrogen, bladder irritants including caffeine, artificial sweeteners, carbonated drinks, concentrated urine, alcohol, fluid consumption this can be too much fluid or not enough. SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE: Difficult to defer urge to pass urine Going to the toilet more often than others - normal voiding frequency is 6-8 times during the day Urinary leaking associated with the urge Fear of urinary leaking, even though may have never leaked Nocturia - Needing to go to the toilet more than two times per night Physiotherapy is proven to be the best first line treatment for OAB, and at Chevron Island Physio we have helped many women with this condition - the results can be life changing. In your initial treatment we will ask lots of questions about your bladder habits, assess your pelvic floor muscles, explain to you about your bladder function and how to start thinking about bladder retraining. We will ask you to complete a bladder diary to assess your bladder & urgency, calculate your fluid intake and urine output and assess your pelvic floor muscles. Based on our findings our treatment approach may include: Behavior retraining or changing habits Bladder retraining and calming Bladder Drills Bladder education Pelvic floor training Electrical stimulation and TENS Breathing training Musculoskeletal treat to treat other drivers we feel may be contributing to the urgency Liaising with Doctors We are here to help
21.01.2022 THE OVERACTIVE PELVIC FLOOR... I feel like there is always so much focus on social media about strengthening the pelvic floor and it is far less common to hear about women who experience pelvic floor pain or over activity. In actual fact, in a lady with pelvic pain, pelvic floor overactivity or hypertonicity, strengthening exercises will actually make them worse! ... Check out our signs and symptoms of an overactive pelvic floor. If this sounds like you I would highly recommend being assessed by a well trained pelvic health Physio. I will be talking more about WHY the pelvic floor can become tight and overactive over the next week
20.01.2022 Apple/blueberry crumble muffins... I’m not really too good at making my cooking look pretty but by gosh these taste amazing. Recipe and method to follow

17.01.2022 What is this you say??? This is an empty cup. Not very exciting hey! It gives nothing, it brings no joy, it provides no nutrients and it certainly doesn’t make you happy. I dare say if you handed this to a guest visiting your house it would also ... not make them very happy. What it does do is it represents so many of my mums which come into the clinic which are putting themselves last. The mums that don’t take time out, the mums that spend all their time looking after other...s, the mums that spend all day cleaning their houses and preparing food for the people they love. Just a reminder to put yourself first occasionally, take that 10 minutes of time out, go for a walk, go to the gym, have a massage or just sit in silence. As the saying goes - you can’t pour from an empty cup. Make sure to fill yours up regularly and be kind to yourself so you can keep being kind to the people you love
17.01.2022 Happy Monday ladies

16.01.2022 I 100% love this notion. A huge list of ‘to do’s’ leads to a cluttered and confused mind. As a busy mum of two boys and multiple businesses my lists build up really quickly... I find getting the simple and smaller tasks crossed off my list as early as possible leaves my mind clear and focussed for the more important jobs. Try it for the week and let me know how you go
15.01.2022 We are celebrating world breastfeeding week. Here’s to all the breastfeeding Mumma’s out there - you are all amazing and doing a great job For something that is supposed to be such an innate activity it sure can be a challenging time for many mums. If you need any help or advice we always recommend Michelle at @parents2b We are all here to support you on every aspect of your motherhood journey. Find your village and make sure you ask for help when you need it... we are all in this together
15.01.2022 Ultrasound of the pelvic floor can give you some fantastic information and my patients love the visual feedback it provides about the lift and movement of their pelvic floor. It is also a great tool to analyze your bladders ability (or inability) to empty by measuring what we call a post void residual (amount of urine left in the bladder after trying to empty it). Aside from these things - we can not replace the gold standard of pelvic floor examination with the use of a digi...tal vaginal examination. Unfortunately ultrasound provides limited information when it comes to assessing prolapse, testing strength and coordination, assessing for over activity in the pelvic floor or checking for sensation deficits. We often utilize ultrasound as a component of your assessment but also believe digital examination is required for a thorough and accurate diagnosis of your particular condition
15.01.2022 Sending love & best wishes to our newly-made-mums and soon-to-be mums. There is nothing more satisfying then helping a woman keep active and remain comfortable throughout her pregnancy. We look forward to seeing both you and your new bubs back in the clinic soon!

13.01.2022 ZESTY BLUEBERRY AND CACAO MUFFINS A new favourite for sure and one the whole family can enjoy. 13.01.2022 My absolute favorite part about being a Mum is seeing the joy and excitement children get from the simplest things. Everything is new and exciting to them. A flower, the sunset, a new animal. I think as adults we get so caught up in rushing around and trying to get things done that we can lose sight of the beauty in the world. This week I plan to slow down, smell the roses and make sure I’m not missing out on the miracles around me
13.01.2022 Exercise therapy (formerly pilates) is a fantastic way to strengthen the entire body. Our classes are individually tailored to suit each participant and offer a safe, welcoming and fun environment for you to exercise in. Watch this space... we are about to launch or Spring into Spring Challenge with great prizes on offer
13.01.2022 Who panics when they are told to drink more water? It is not uncommon for women with pelvic floor weakness to avoid drinking water in the hope it will help reduce urinary leakage. DID YOU KNOW - restricting your fluid intake can actually make your bladder symptoms worse? I know it sounds counter intuitive but this is very true. So many of my ladies suffering from urinary incontinence present to the clinic and explain that they only drink very small amounts of water to preven...t leakage. Drinking less water can actually irritate your bladder and make your symptoms worse. It is best to seek individual advice when making big changes to your current intake but as a general rule: Aim for your urine to be a pale yellow colour at mid afternoon Avoid or limit bladder irritants including including coffee, caffeine products, alcohol, fizzy drinks and artificial sweeteners. Urinary incontinence can be a complex condition and you are best seeking individual advice to help improve your symptoms

11.01.2022 R U OK? A simple but often scary question. In these new and forever changing times I am seeing a lot of unease and uncertainty in people. For some, the change is welcomed as a time to start fresh, reassess their current lifestyle and make their life better. For others, change and uncertainty can lead to feelings of stress, anxiety and panic. Not able to plan holidays, see friends in person or travel to visit family. Remember to check in on your loved one. Your happy friends, your sad friends, you strong friends and your family. It’s ok not to be okay. Big hugs for anyone that needs them at the moment
10.01.2022 Change can be scary, trying new things can be daunting and stepping outside our comfort zone takes courage. What if your fear of trying something new is what is holding you back from achieving something great Take the first step and see where it leads you
10.01.2022 Our 15 minute Busy Mums workout series continues- here is session 3. Enjoy ladies. Sound on for this one. We finally sorted out our tech As always please always see a women’s health Physio prior to commencing any new exercise
08.01.2022 Standing upright in a swimming pool to the level of your sternum for 20minutes is more effective at reducing lower limb swelling compared to sitting upright in a chair with your legs elevated for 20minutes. If you are struggling with excessive foot / ankle / leg swelling during pregnancy our womens health physiotherapist’s can give you strategies to reduce fluid and will often prescribe a compression garment to help as well.
06.01.2022 A huge thank you to our referring doctors. We are so lucky to work alongside so many amazing health care providers on the Gold Coast to ensure amazing continuity of care for our patient’s @chevronislandphysio

05.01.2022 We had so much fun at our staff bonding event last week @pinotandpicassosouthport thank you for hosting us. 04.01.2022 Do you need to see a physio bub worried about what to do with bub? Please don’t be. Babies are SO welcome in our clinic. Easy access and plenty of space (and spare hands to help).
04.01.2022 When life gives you lemons you have two choices - 1. to see the lemon as a sour and unenjoyable item, feel sorry for yourself and wallow in the fact your friend was given something better OR 2. Make the most of that lemon, say thank you, make lemonade, plant a lemon tree, spice up your meals, learn to juggle or sell them and buy something better. There is always an alternative solution to a problem you just need to work out what that is Happy Monday
02.01.2022 Common but not normal. So what is considered normal? According to the Continence Foundation of Australia, a normal bladder: empties 4-8 times each day (every 3-4 hours)... can hold up to 400-600ml of urine (the sensation of needing to empty occurs at 200-300ml) may wake you when it is full, but gives you enough time to find a toilet does not leak urine. See more
01.01.2022 15 mins BUSY MUMS WORKOUT Be sure to see a trained women’s health physiotherapist prior to starting any new exercise regime, especially if you have recently had a baby, are pregnant or have had a recent gynae surgery.
